2013 Hybrid MPG Results

I have 14k mi on my CMAX and have done extensive testing to come up with "every 10deg.F drop in temp you get a 2mpg drop in mileage." You go to fordcmaxhybridforum.com and then to fuel mileage forum where there are several threads on this subject.

If you get in the Atlanta area I would be happy to show you there is nothing wrong with your FFH. Good Luck

So essential people who live in Canada and Alaska are majorly screwed and Ford should probably not sell these there.

If those were the US numbers id be right on par at 37mpg since im 90 percent city

I have a very happy customer with my Grill Covers in Alaska and CMAX's come standard with coolant block heater. I think all FORD Hybrids should come with them. Do you put your car in a garage?

 

Just checked http://www.ford.ca/cars/fusion/trim/?trim=hybrid they have it listed as 35 city 53 highway

That's a joke, Canada's EPA doesn't appear to be any better.

No not here in va no block heaters. Apparently they knew the cold was going to hammer mileage

I concur, these things run really cold. Interesting how they lose MPG at such a high amount vs the 2010-12 models. Mine is only losing at most 5 MPG on the coldest days. Part of that is the low tire pressures I run in it for snow handling in the 2010, they are set to 30 all around, otherwise it would be an ice skate. Next set of tires will be the Goodyears LS2 that come on the 18" 13 FFH. Those with 42 PSI handle snow great.

I took two 20 minute trips today: 23 MPG for a hybrid that's rated 47.

wow im averaging 37 and i feel stiffed. I couldnt imagine what id do if i was hit twenties.

Well as of today my dealer has official been taken off my "case" and refuses to work or even talk to me. Ive been handed over to Ford, just curious anyone know who akhorasa@ford.com is? This person is my only direct contact to Ford.

Now that I got the first tank done (and got 53 MPG btw :) ), I'm finally letting my wife drive Sylvia (it has been difficult but I like my marriage)... yesterday she was proud to say she got 46 MPG on her first trip with her... I was so proud!!!!

:drop: I'm trying to teach my wife to get MPG results as high as I do, but she drives more aggressively :peelout: than I do and doesn't start braking as early, which is why her gas mileage is lower

If you want to increase your MPG's by 3-4mpg for nothing here is what you do.

 

1. Go to MyView on Smart Gauge and on the left side scroll to Power gauge(Empower) and on the right side scroll to temp gauge. The bottom line on temp gauge is 140deg.F and the middle is 180to+220deg.F. Without Grill Covers the max temp you see is probably less than 180deg.F Optimum temp is 202-212deg.F according to FORD. This is why you are getting poor MPG's.

 

2. Take heavy duty clear packing tape and seal off center and bottom grills. If you do a good job people won't notice it is even there. Your temps should go up faster and higher after this and also your MPG's. At 215deg.F your radiator fan will turn on.

 

You said that you are mostly doing city driving so you probably will have trouble getting to 200deg.F. You should notice your heater warms up faster than before. Let us know how it goes. BTW take tape off before FORD sees your car, we don't want to confuse them. It will be interesting what FORD comes up with on why you are getting poor gas mileage.

I have been considering that but im afraid something will catch fire or Ford will void my warranty if they find out...etc But ill give it try see what happens....thx

This is what i get for buying an american car. Done with this and Ford as well.

 

I've had one American car in my life until I bought my '13 FFH. It was a 1984 Buick Regal Coupe. I swore that I would never buy American ever again and kept that promise until I test drove the Fusion. I think people can change and certainly a company can change for the better in 30 years. I think Ford has done a good job with their cars in the last few years. I hope that Ford will justify my renewed faith in American cars!

 

One thing to note is that Hyundai experienced a very similar issue with their MPG numbers last year. They have decided to reimburse the owners for the discrepancies with their MPG numbers. I think Hyundai did the right thing by addressing the issue, took care of their customers to some degree, revised the EPA estimates downward and moved on.

 

Hybrid technology is still in its infancy and all the testing that EPA does is geared toward the traditional internal combustion engines. So the numbers that are likely to be generated by flawed testing may be And weather, driving style, the road condition, winter/summer gas formulas, and others things surely contribute to differing real-life MPG numbers. In my humble opinion, I dont believe EPA testing can accurately predict the MPG for electric/hybrid cars at this time.

 

having said that though, I hope that Ford take these complaints seriously and look into the issue sincerely. When in doubt, Ford coud choose to error on the side of caution and on the side of their paying customers and try to make everyone happy. Hyundai did it and so can Ford!

From watching my coolant temp in Celsius in Engineering Test Mode I could see that the warmest the coolant got driving on the highway but within the city was 80 degrees Celsius. That's 176F. That was the peak on the highway, after driving a few miles in the city the temp had dropped to 55-60 Celsius. Right now in winter that is as warm as the engine gets when driving in the city. If I drive on the highway it'll get warmer, but probably not up to peak temperature.

The only difference is that Hyundai/Kia actually did their tests incorrectly. They didn't follow the EPA test cycles. Ford has not been found to have cheated that way. But if Ford wants to give out some reimbursement as a goodwill gesture to pacify those who are upset with their mileage then I won't discourage that ;)

I really have nothing against the Fusion, I actually find myself wishing I can drive it instead of the 2010. My issue is with Ford corporate. How many drivers on here that are getting OK gas mileage have to drive it so lightly to get that?

 

When I look back to the test drive I did in another Fusion hybrid a couple weeks back, I got 38 in it, then it dawned on me, we had stopped at a gas station to put some gas in it, and the engine was running all that time. Which means, the actual MPG was much higher than that. Thinking back to that road test now makes me believe, it isn't how I drive the car anymore, but that there really is an issue somewhere in the cars software that cant be found.

 

I am keeping my fingers crossed that some resolution can be had with Ford so I can keep the car, or they can switch it out for another one that does work right. Half considering keeping it if they can warranty it B2B for 125K. This way I can get the plugs changed every 4500 miles and not have to pay for them! LOL

Didn't you post somewhere that you gave the car back and the dealer cut you a good deal on a TI non-hybrid model? It's hard to tell as you have been all over different threads that you were looking at a MKT and many other cars.

 

So do you still own the 2013 hybrid?

I'm actually finding that driving it too lightly causes the milieage to drop. It's not getting the EPA numbers when I drive it more normally, either, but it's consistently better than when I try to baby it into submission. It's a quirky little thing, for sure.

You really have nothing to worry about, FORD has designed the ICE to protect itself no matter what happens. It will do what ever it takes to keep from over heating including shutting down the ICE. This is covered in the maintenance section of your owners manual. If you have $165 for a ScanGauge you can actually watch temps changing along with everything else.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and predict a software update that will take care of some of these problems. Things like grill shutters not closing, etc-- that can all be done through software. There have got to be several things Ford can due without rebuilding our engines from scratch that will help those who are struggling with mileage.

So do you still own the 2013 hybrid?

I still own the car, right now its on consignment with my dealer. I did place an order for a regular Ti, and finding it very difficult to get by with only one car. Because of where we live, if you dont have a car, you are pretty much stuck. Thankfully my wife and I work very close to each other so we can car pool. Reason I mentioned looking for an MKT is because since we got rid of our Flex and then the F150, we found out too late how much we actually did use them every month.

 

Basically I have 3 things going on right now, and it has my head spinning trying to sort it all out. First thing is just trying to get Ford to work with me on the current car, I dont know where it will go, but I have to at least try. Second, waiting for the other car to be built, and going 8 or more weeks without a second car, is probably not going to work at all, so Third, screw the car, and get an MKT/FLEX and be done with it. The last part is more difficult than the first two mainly because the Fusion was supposed to be my last new car for quite some time, so which ever vehicle I replace it with I have to REALLY LIKE. I am also trying to find one that has what I want in it, for the price that puts it under what I pay now for the Fusion, since I have to roll at least $4K into it from depreciation on the new one. This has been the most difficult part mainly because all the ones I found are over 250 miles away.

 

Sounds crazy I know, I really should just stick with the FFH, but I got so obsessed with the MPG in it, that it drove me nutz, drove my dealer nutz, and alienated me here with some of you.

 

I have one final thought rolling around my numb skull, and that is replace both cars. Thought being that I really liked the Avalon, and it is a bit roomier in the back than the Fusion is, and for a second vehicle find an older lower cost pickup or SUV that can pull the horse trailer. This way we have the hauler when we need it, and a road car for our trips that gets good MPG on the highway as opposed to the MKT/Flex. This last part will take a lot of looking and finding the right dealer to work with to get it done. I really dont want to give up the 2010, what I really want is to come to some sort of agreement with Ford on swapping out this car for one that actually does get good MPG, especially now that I tested a couple other Ford Hybrids and had no problem getting 40+ in them without doing extreme P&G.

Completely agree, if the sticker had the Canadian mpgs listed the obsession would be gone. But then again I would have probably purchased a kia optima hybrid instead. Anyway I just hope ford corporate does something ASAP because I went to have it appraised as trade and in and if they don't buy it back its going to put a big hole in pocket and upset me even more.
