I still have occasional flare ups of cursing at other drivers doing stupid stuff or speed thru construction zone like maniacs.

 

Don't we have a law in Illinois requiring those flare ups? :)

 

I'm at just shy of 30k on my Fusion and the dash reads 48.3 average. My average commute gets me 53-55 MPG either way, I have hills but my house and work are probably at about the same altitude so it evens out by the end of the trip (21 miles one way). Its a mix of rural roads, suburban gridlock, endless road construction and long rows of people that seem intent on destroying my brake score. I do much better for the 5-6 miles closest to my house despite the steep hills I tackle on each side of the river. For example, the gas station I use is 6 miles from home and that stretch itself will get me in the 60s every time with my personal best at 76.1. I'll confess that as much as I love my hybrid I don't do manual calculations, I find it's much better for my blood pressure and sanity to stick to simple, short term goals like using less than 4 gallons per week so I can make my wife feel bad about her monsterous SUV burning 27 gallons a week (enough difference to pay my car payment and fuel use every month).

 

I'll join in on the relaxation comments others have posted though. I'm far more calm driving the Hybrid than I have ever been. I find myself laughing at other drivers when they zip by me and I look down to see that I'm doing 60 mph and not using a drop of gas to do it. I do find myself trying to beat by trip MPG constantly but it's really just a travel game I play by myself since things like "I Spy" aren't much fun when you're alone in the car.

My mpg was climbing to 42mpg since last August when I got my car, but this summer I dived below 40mpg avg sadly. I live near many 70mph roads even though in city, so think that's the problem along with AC use.

So, my lifetime is up to 40.8 at about 1300 miles total. I'm slowly realizing using ICE isn't bad. I've been using it more to charge the battery to almost full, thus helping out the ICE keeping cruising fuel economy better. Below are my two best drives ever. The first one was windows down and temps in the low 80's, all city driving. The second was the trip back home from the local Dairy Queen. On the way there it's a lot of uphill driving so the battery was almost fully charged. That then helped to see the MPG's obtained on the trip home. Obviously not repeatable all the time, but still crazy nonetheless! Boy, not using the AC really helps more than I thought it would.

2013 @ 20,782. Lifetime is at 45.2, never reset. Manual calcs show 43.5. Majority of the time it takes more gas when filling up than what it says it used. Mainly rural 2-lane roads, 60 miles a day.

70,500 as of this afternoon (got a job in my hometown so mileage accumulation has slowed considerably)

 

10 mile trip with a few stop lights, and 50 - 70 mph speeds and my mileage sits around 39.5

 

couple weekends ago I was on I-10 for a 4 hour trip one way and averaged 43mpg with speeds getting up into the 90's at certain points :shift:

Just filled up with slightly over 300 miles on this tank and averaged 44 mpg. I did not drive gently to achieve this. I am now @4400 miles on the odometer. My C-Max starting improving around the same total miles.

However, my best MPG days for my return trips usually occur when there are a lot of traffic backups. Funny thing is, I now look at this situation as a win either way! Light traffic gets me home sooner (at lower MPG), but heavier traffic (in just the right places) can result in better MPGs. :)

 

 

 

My sentiments exactly. Never before have I thought to myself, Cool! traffic is slowing down. Or perfect!, that light up there turned red so I can coast and regen. Until now that is. ;)

 

At just over 1200 miles my screen shows 43.4 mpg and has been creeping up .1 every day or so the last few days as I learn how to drive more efficiently by using the tips and tricks learned here. I am not remotely diligent enough to keep careful track and use fuelly, so I will have to rely on what the screen tells me. Thanks to all for the knowledge you have gleaned from your own trial and error. :worship:

At about 2,500 miles on my 2014 FFH, I have lifetime mpg of 45.7. On a recent trip from DeKalb Illinois to Buffalo Grove Illinois, we got 52.7; highway all the way and I kept it between 60 - 65. Most miles are short trips to and from work and running errands. LOVE this car!

My 2013 with 20,000 miles has a lifetime avg of 45.6

33080 on mine, lifetime since I drove off the lot is 42.6, that includes last years really cold winter. Wow not even 16 months and I am nearly out of warranty.

16k on mine, bought it used at 6400 miles, previous owner's lifetime was 36 MPG. They never reset the trip meters. The 10k we've put on it we are averaging 39.2 right now, I'm super pleased, anytime we go anywhere here in the PNW it's a 300ft climb up a 1/4 mile stretch. Cool part is coming home, but no matter what the steep hills always affect the MPGs. Might be moving back to OKC next summer, looking forward to smashing my MPG records :)

You haven't given us any info on your car, like the Model Year, date of manufacture, etc.

That PCM Recalibration was intended for Fusion Hybrids made up to July, 16, 2013. If it was made after that the update is not needed.

You can find the build date on the window sticker or look here for your car's info.

 

The most outstanding feature of that software recalibration was increasing the maximum pure electric speed to 85 mph from 62 mph, allowing increased use of electric-only mode on the highway.

Does your car exceed 62 mph in EV mode, like going downhill on a highway?

If it does, the software update was done.

Just purchased the 2015 Fusion SE Hybrid, Saturday and so far getting 39 MPG. It is slowly creeping up, can't wait to get at least in the 50 MPG.

Congrats and welcome! You've set your sights quite high, which could lead to disappointment. It takes ideal conditions and driving technique to reach the upper 40s in MPG. What wheels do you have? How much highway do you normally drive, and how fast are you inclined to drive on it? Do you regularly carry passengers? These factors and more will affect your results.

 

The best way to save fuel would be to not drive it... The next best way is gentle on the accelerator and gentle on the brakes. Lots of other good info here, so read up! Best of luck to you! It's a great car.
