Fynack: By your own choice, you will have spent more on your purchase and gas for the next five years than any FFH owner here. As Hybridbear said, you're not going to see a dime from a lawsuit so that won't make up the difference.

I don't quite understand why this is such an issue. I have NEVER gotten EPA rating on any vehicle I have driven. I am buying one of these hoping to get in the high 30's to low 40's. I AM confident after driving a (cold) one and got close to 42 out of it on a ten mile drive, in my first time in one, that the car can do it, but you are going to have to really work at getting it. My multiple F150's and my multiple Expeditions with the 5.4 engine were always at least 20 to 30 percent under the EPA claim.

It sounds like a bunch of lawyers are simply creating some work for themselves.

Just my humble opinion, but there it is.

Prius, Civic, CR-Z, Camry Hybrid and even the 2010 Fusion Hybrid all meet or exceed their EPA numbers. I get about 32 MPG a whopping 15 MPG off of EPA numbers. So yeah, the hybrid version is no better than a run of the mill Elantra or Nissan Altima when it comes to fuel economy. $3000 down the tube I guess... I will hold out for that ECU update that will hopefully bring the claimed economy that Ford is being sued for.

Does that have to be steady speed only, not like normal driving? No stops in there?

I had 4 trips today - morning 60 miles @ 47.9 MPG (temp about 40), afternoon 60 miles @ 50.2 MPG (temp 48), evening 16 miles @ 52.0 MPG (temp 45), evening 16 miles @ 49.2 MPG (temp 44). They didn't follow your above protocol, were just regular driving. Making a trip to Richmond on Friday and getting gas on the way back when there will be about 550 miles for the tank, anxious to see how the tank turned out as the display appears to be about 1-2MPG optimistic, but that was exactly the way the Prius and the 2010 FFH were also.

The problem is, only a handful of Fusion owners are having a major issue, while a good amount here are doing just fine. Those who arent having problems just dont get the exasperation those of us who are having these issues are going through. If this was my first Hybrid it could be understandable why its poor, however, this is my fourth, and all the previous ones were easy to get EPA and above.

My only hope at this point is that they actually are working on a fix behind the scenes and a PCM update will correct what ever is causing the car not to get its expected Fuel economy. Just need to be patient at this point since I have exhausted all other means of resolution.

Dude. That's not even half a day's pay. Why would I waste my time?

That said, no, I am not getting 47 mpg or anywhere near it. But your constant abrasive harping here on this one issue, done in a manner that's accusatory toward other members whose experience or opinion is different from yours, doesn't make you a very sympathetic case. I'd be much more inclined to view your dilemma with a bit more empathy if you would stop acting like the rest of us owe you something because you got a crappy car.

I think it's a combination of things. I feel bad for you, and yeah, even for Fynack, but I also spent many months waiting to get my own Fusion and, now that it's here, I want to enjoy it. My mileage is also not stellar, though not as bad as yours, so it's a bit of a sense of guilty pleasure to be enjoying my ride while some others are not having such a grand time of it.

I do agree that there are lemons out there and that the owners of those cars are going to feel pretty crappy. Mine is not quite the lemon, but it's not quite the peach, either. I'm trying to stay on the bright side and enjoy what I have, but that doesn't mean I don't believe you are having a bad experience with yours. It's just that I'm not sure what I can do to help you.

Elle, I understand your position and I think you understand ours. The harping about the mpg on the forum is because Ford refuses to do anything about it. Im pretty sure no one is getting 47mpg and i dont expect to get that myself. But the numbers i was getting made me feel like I paid 33k for a 26k car out of deception. There are cars out there that appear to have an efficient ICE or ecu and can get 43-45mpgs. Why Ford couldnt just own up and swap the cars is the problem. My original deposit was on fusion hybrid in oct of last year but for some reason that fleet of cars left mexico and entered the usa only to be returned back to mexico before it could leave texas. This happened 3 times on this fleet which had my original car and finally got the sent back to mexico with an unknown delivery date. The dealer was able to find me another one a month later from another dealership. Maybe I did get the lemon but the lemon law doesnt work for mpg and since ford doesnt want say somethings wrong for their own legal reasons they stay quiet and say its your fault. The forums are really our only way to get a message to Ford, because they do monitor them.

Its jealousy you know! :) Damn you and your good running cars! :) LOL

I picked up my car two days ago. I'm getting 45mph on a 46 mile commute to work each day. I've never driven a hybrid before, got 18 inch wheels.

Whats the weather like in los angeleez?

It's currently 60. Should warm up later in the day to about 80.

I experience a noticeable difference between temps around 30 and 60, when the weather is milder the system seems far more likely to go to EV sooner and more often...don't know if the HVAC is a factor, behavior difference if the Li-Ion HV battery is colder or warmer, or what else it might be... but I sure am hoping that those who are getting sub-par MPG in the cold weather also see a bit of a behavior difference when their weather warms up a bit.

I'm fingering my crossed that holds up. Hoping that the time I was down in Florida when it was warm was due to not being broken in and not just broke.

45 mph is easy to achieve.

Presumably you meant 45 mpg.

I made a video for you, Fynack. It was just my daily commute from school, so I'm not going to do a reverse trip today, and I did like 10 minutes at 55 mph, 10 minutes at 45 and 10 minutes at 40, all on cruise control. It was 25 miles total, the car had sat in the cold for 5 hours beforehand. 34 degrees outside. Got home with 50.1 mpg trip average. When I was going 40 I had some people lined up behind me, so I probably won't do that too often, but dang, it really did well today! The video is uploading to YouTube from my phone, I'll add the link when its done.

UPDATE: Apparently YouTube doesnt let you upload videos longer than 15 minutes, so I'll have to edit it or something... Gotta work for the next 10 hours though.

I ran your test the best I could. There were some stops which should reduce mileage.

Starting with a blue thermometer (ICE cold) I got 51 MPG.

What do you want the video to show ? The speedometer, the road, the smiling driver ?

Anyone remember the BBC's Top Gear test where Jeremy Clarkson ran BMW M3 against Prius? I think it just goes to show that the technology alone cannot achieve the EPA numbers all the time. The video is quite amusing but fun to watch.

It also does not help if you buy a lemon either and for that I feel your pain. However, using the forum as an archive to build and document your legal case against Ford seems a bit selfish and inconsiderate to the rest of the members who want a community of like-minded drivers to have fun and enjoy their cars and driving experience.

I am not looking to get into arguments or downplay what you are experiencing. Now that you have bought a new Lexus Hybrid (I am envious because Lexus is an excellent car. I just don't have the means to buy one!), it seems that your presence here now is to vent and for your legal case only.

Well, it looks like some have taken on Mr. Cho's challenge and reported their results. If he comes back here I hope he has a fist full of crisp new $100. bills.

Since Fynack seems to be completely satisfied with the MPG that he is getting in his new Lexus, I really hope that he won't be coming around to bring other members down any more. But if he does come around looking for something to complain about, I would like to suggest that he visit the Mayan forum to complain about the world not ending on December 21, 2012 as "advertised".
