2013 Ford Fusion MPG Challenge

Here is my video of the mileage challenge.

It is a bit dodgy but it is close to the specs.

I covered up the microphone holes with my finger near the end of the video.

The trip was 53.7 MPG.

I don't expect the $100 but I DO expect that, in the future, I will not be accused of being less than honest about my MPG.

 

Not exactly what I wanted but there were some interesting things in the video. Its amazing how long you can stay in EV mode. Was this a fairly flat road? Each time i calculated you were in ev mode over a minute each and it barely seemed the ICE was helping at all except for initial acceleration. What was the temp at the time? I must have gotten a faulty battery because there was no way it would last over a minute in EV, the battery would have drained in 30 secs.

Wow, i just realized that your lifetime or tank average is 48.6 (what ever is displayed). So you potential could average 50s in your car if you drove like this all the time. You must not be trying very hard to get the 48.6 am i right?

The covers are helping with the temperature control, which is also helping with the fuel economy, as for aerodynamics, not ruling that out either. All I know is that as long as I keep it from using EV, the engine isn't working as hard and returning better fuel economy now.

 

However, its a band aid approach, and doesn't resolve the underlying issue, because this further enhances my claim that there is something not quite right. When Summer rolls around, and I have to take them off, we shall see if it resumes what it did in FL, or if it will actually start returning numbers the rest of you guys(and gals) see.

What temps are you running up to? At 215deg.F the fan turns on so if your consistently above 213deg.F I would remove lower cover. You are good in the 202-212deg.F area.

Absolutely amazing! A truly remarkable example of modern mechanical and computer engineering and application. As a retired computer coder (among other things) makes me proud!

What temps are you running up to? At 215deg.F the fan turns on so if your consistently above 213deg.F I would remove lower cover. You are good in the 202-212deg.F area.

The problem comes about when the ICE is running these speeds and charging the battery. For thoes of you running on the highway, try getting the battery charged up and then trying to keep above the 63 MPH (Battery) threshold. My guess is you will get much better millage. As for city driving I have found it is better to use the batter to cruze rather than accelerate, so I accelerate moderatly with the ice up to speed then back off a bit and cruze on the battery. Finally as I said before temperatue makes a difference. At about 50 deg and above I have found that not only does the battery last longer but it also charges quicker.

 

So Code_Warrior, you have the advantage for now ;)

Great findings but it just seems like theres two different cars out there. Some require what you stated while others stay at 61mph and get great mpg. I think the battery is the culprit. Battery storage can vary widely and Ford could assume a big range as acceptable.

Most of my driving is 'city' with 45 speed limit and lots of stops. Maybe 10 percent is 'highway' with 65 speed limit and no stops.

 

Based on my casual observations during the challenge test drive, I did another test. 22 miles at 45 MPH on CC with only one stop to turn around at 11 miles. MPG for this test was 61.3.

Obviously he has no fear of not getting paid since hes in no hurry to reach the PM limit. I for one gladly pay heavily for reasons of principle as you can see by me losing thousands on trading in my ffh. So a 100 dollars is nothing when it comes to advertising a challenge and someone meeting it. Obviously if Ford had principles like myself, everyone who was experiencing proven poor gas mileage would get assistance in some way.

The fact that Hermans chose the FFH is one of the best indicators of the bright future Ford has in store. It should be used in their advertising. The son-in-law of a friend is a BMW owning lawyer. He wanted a car to give himself an environmentally correct image so he bought two Smart cars. He fell asleep on his return home from showing off the Smart car at a party and hit a tree at 35 mph. He was in the hospital for six months. I think Hermans made the better choice.

I think I will take my future savings and go to a casino and turn it into a fortune.

Smart car is not exactly a BMW, they may manufacturer it now but definitely not a BMW. As for the Ford brand, in my personal option their in BIG trouble and if the EPA test comes back with any small error they will be in even bigger trouble. Its not just the fuel mileage thats bothering people but its lone 4 or 5 months wait people are having in getting their fusions hybrids. Obviously something is wrong with some of these cars if fleets and fleets of the these vehicles are being recalled back to the factory.
