2013 FFH real world fuel economy

Recommended Posts

Just had my first fill up....ended up at 44.5mpg. Was able to fill it up to 13 gallons....but had lots of issues with the pump kicking off.....maybe it was just the pump I was using though and not something to do with the actual gas tank or tank doors.

Just crossed the half tank mark....probably sometime next week I will be getting my first fill up... pretty amazing.. it will be just about a MONTH before I've needed to tank up!!!

VERY VERY SAD ... Full Tank of Gas .. Estimated Miles 374 till empty... :(

this is upsetting....

Been logging every trip now, comparing the ScanGauge to the dash, and so far there has not been a match between the two. I calibrated the SG by the tank fills, and MPH to GPS, so it should be fairly accurate. So far have not gone over 35 MPG. Max RPM today was 2341, max speed 57 MPH, average speed 27MPH, max water temp 181*, slight correction, I did go over 35, it read 35.2 MPG.

The max water temp was only for a short period of time while I was doing 50 MPH, majority of the time it was under 160*. Beginning to think its a cooling problem, maybe its running too cold? But how would that explain the poor MPG in 78* weather when the heater was off, and nothing was sapping heat from the engine. Puzzling.

Coupled with the fouled plugs it can. The fouled plugs directly relate to excessive fuel usage. Someone somewhere posted that you can expect up to a 17% drop in economy during the winter, which seems to fit in with the 2010, I calculated it out to roughly 13% loss over the winter, and it does vary depending on how cold, some days I can see 40, others 33. This past week the 10 was in the mid 30's, but still well within acceptable MPG. It is still outperforming the new car.

acdii Does Fuel injector cleaner do any good? It sounds like some sensor isn't working right or calibration is off. I would have thought FORD would have figured this out by now, some CMAX owners have simular issues. I wonder what the air filter looks like, if there was some restriction there it would cause the engine to run richer. Probable to early for K&N to make a filter. Also if there was a restriction in exhaust system it would run rich. Just a thought.

The CMAX has the same problem and that is why I came up with the covers. At 75deg.F I run cut out cover on top and keep lower cover on to get 206deg.F WT.

The air filter is in that top cover, and I took it out when I pulled a plug, it is clean, and I saw nothing that would indicate a flow problem. I did however see oil in the throttle body.

How is oil getting in throttle body? Is that blowby from EGR valve? My ICE cover and air filter are partially covered by ICE compartment. Didn't make it easy to get to. I'm assuming air filter is fine, mine appears to be small and two tubes are connected to it. I.m not sure why.

That is a dang good question. For only 5300 miles or so when I took that pic, I shouldn't be seeing any oil there. Usually you see oil there on older vehicles from the PVC system, usually kicked up by blowby.

More info for service mgr.

well I've reached the half tank point now... it's been about 20 days... looks like I might make it to an entire month before I need to fill up for the first time....

Well if you post it on Fuelly and Fueleconomy.gov, you may raise the overall average! :)

While I lower it! :(

Just finished our road trip from MN to CA and back home. Got 44.2 MPG for the entire trip. Along the way I made some observations:

  • gas mileage is noticeably higher in warmer weather - the instant fuel economy display would show around 35-40 MPG for the ICE when not charging the battery on flat ground at 25 degrees, at 65 degrees under the same conditions it would show an instant fuel economy closer to 45-50 MPG
  • gas mileage seems to be better on hills than flat ground - cruising at 60 MPH on flat ground the ICE stays on the entire time and the car doesn't run in EV mode, however when going over rolling hills the car will shift into EV mode while going downhill and use the ICE going uphill, this seems to yield higher MPG, much like pulse & glide
  • I do not believe 47 MPG to be attainable on the highway
  • in the city in California we were averaging around 50 MPG, 47 MPG city seems very realistic in warm weather, 40 MPG during the cold MN winters
  • And, I think I know how Ford achieved 47 MPG in their testing and why they're offering to work with the EPA to create new testing procedures for hybrids, but I'll save that for another post

I can agree that 47 City is doable, saw it myself, but 47 highway? Pipedream. Even hypermiling on the interstate, 47 is unattainable. Then again, just getting over 36 in mine is unattainable.

Check out the topic:

How Ford achieved 47 MPG in testing, and why you can't in the real world

http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/5923-how-ford-achieved-47-mpg-in-testing-and-why-you-cant-in-the-real-world/

for my ideas on why most of our results are less than 47 MPG while Ford states that the Fusion & C-Max can do 47 MPG

Its near 60* this morning, best it got was 35 MPG. Looks like temp doesnt matter much with mine, 3* or 57* it still only gets 35. Look 3 full bars too! This is near the end of my 30 mile trip, most of it below 55 MPH.

You need to get your WT up and then see what happens. 206deg.F is target temp. Put the Grill Covers on.

Acdii, if I took the same trip under the same conditions, my FFH would see MPG in the 40s. Mine has a lifetime MPG only 1/10 of a mile better than yours. Miy lower MPG is due to spending too much time above 70 mph. We get the point. There is something wrong with a component or setting on yours, but there is nothing wrong with the design of the 2013 FFH.

Yeah if his car doesn't respond hardly at all (or AT all) to the warmer weather, something just ain't right, and hopefully his dealer (who has been cooperative) can replace the O2 sensors or other possible sensors that could be factors -- however selling that to Ford isn't always easy I suppose.

But to corroborate your claim that good MPG can exist, we had great weather today and 70 degrees, so it was another new MPG high for me - from my 60 mile commute the trip summary said it was 52.6 MPG.

So if I can get 52.6 and he can only get 35 each having good temps, I guess the search continues for the sensor or software setting that tells his engine to run as much as it does or as rich as it does.

Temp DOES make a difference!!

trip from home to Maryville, Tn 34.5 mi, temp 65 - 67, speed: 60% 56 mph, 20% 50, 20% <=45, 1450 total mi.

50.1 mpg... Return trip 48.3

Same trip with weather in mid 30s was 44 in, 41 return.

I finally did get the temp up to 206, made very little difference, 35.6, got 204 on another trip and got 36.9 Both were trips over 11 miles on a warm car. At no time did I go over 63 MPH, and those were all going downhill.

One big thing I have discovered by using the scangauge, the dash calculations are off 2-3 MPG, and miles driven varies by as much as .5 miles. Past three days I drove the exact same route to work, and each trip is 30.8 miles. The dash read 30.3 and 30.4, also the MPG on the dash read 38.3 every time, yet the SG read 35.9, 35.6 and 36.6.

It was in the mid 30's this morning temp wise, and I did better today than yesterday when it was 60. I guess I got an Arctic Hybrid! :p

It is more than annoying to buy a new, expensive car and have problems so soon and that consume so much of your private time and money.

I hope you are keeping a journal, with photos, of all the things you have posted in this Forum so you can bundle it all up for Ford Customer Service (or a lawyer).

There is not much anyone here can do to help you, except sympathize - Ford needs your data, whether they like it or not.

You might have to bypass the normal chain of command in Ford CS and bring this to the attention of someone with some authority.

Your car obviously has something out of whack to need spark plugs and the various other issues you've related here.

Your issue is not fuel consumption, the car apparently is out of tune and therefore it is not running properly.

If it were me, I would spend time hammering that concept to anyone and everyone that has an email address at Ford.

Your State's LL is there for exactly this reason, a vehicle that cannot be fixed.

I wish you success in finding an answer to this vexing problem.

yeah, its the long process of waiting for the next CEL to occur, need it to happen 2 more times before I can file. The first time in the shop may not count since no CEL occurred. Maybe I'll get lucky and have a snowplow take the car out, then no one needs to worry about it except the insurance company.

As I think back, $500 buys a lot of diesel.
