Navigation Map A5

I bought an A5 card and headed to PA this weekend where I will definitely need the Nav, hopefully won't have any strange anomalies.

No problems to report on todays travels from North Platte, NE to KC, MO. I like the MFT Nav graphics when a change of direction is needed, very clear.

I mainly updated my A4 card to an A5 in order to keep up with new roads, restaurants etc....

From my house to a Kroger Self Service gas station is about 0.8 mile away and I of course used my MFT in the car as well as my Garmin 1690 (with lifetime updates). So what's the difference in Navigation between these two units.

Getting out of my subdivision was the same for both units as well as getting on the main road, but there was a difference when I got to the first stoplight, the Garmin had me turn left and go a short distance and then turn right on to a service road and then I approached the service station.

The Ford had me go to the second stoplight and make a u turn go back to the first stoplight and make a right and the rest was the same as the Garmin, but it corrected itself when I used the Garmin route almost immediately as soon as that left was made. I ignored the route suggested by the MFT.

However using the Garmin a while back when using a rental car I had it searching for a Mexican restaurant and it landed me in a street that didn't even have that restaurant or any restaurant on that block.

I don't completely trust any of them because there are not enough 'preferences' for the User.

Choosing 'take shortest route' will take you down dirt roads, side streets and other less than desirable routes.

A few years ago my Garmin wanted me to turn on a one lane dirt road to get to Colorado Springs, nope.

As acdii mentioned, he was routed to a Ferry.

 

I believe in my Mod-1 eyeballs and common sense more than these devices.

It is nice to watch them side-by-side though and note the differences.

They are useful and can certainly help but let the buyer beware.

My old Garmin wanted me to make a left turn in the middle of a bridge. There was a road underneath the bridge that made sense but the only way to get to it was to continue to the end of the bridge and circle around and down to go under the bridge to get to it.

 

There is an intersection about two miles from my house that when I approach it while following an active route the Garmin tells me to make a U turn. I continue through the intersection and there are no further nonsense instructions from the Garmin.

 

They are great tools but they can't be followed blindly.

The MFT nav. loves to tell me to "make a legal U turn" but that ain't legal around here.

Anyone remember that funny car insurance commercial where the NAV system was like "Turn right ....................................... in 20 feet. But cause of the delay they turn into a building?

We were in Scranton PA and decided to go to Perkins, the nav said there was one less than 3 miles away, OK great. Set as destination, and 5 minutes later there we were there on Ravine St among and a bunch of old houses and apartments and a payday loan place - but no Perkins.

So now being home I looked on Perkins' web site, here is how they list it:

SCRANTON (DICKSON CITY)

1130 Ravine St.

Dickson City, PA 18508

Those dorks - there is a Ravine St in *both* Scranton AND Dickson City, so when the address gets fed into whatever directory service, well of course everyone gets it wrong. However looking up that street address in Dickson City using Google Earth - yep, there it is (but labeled as Scranton when showing the mark on the screen - go figure).

 

So once again, the nav is a handy guide but definitely not fool-proof.

Score one for the MFT today, at the end of todays' travels in Farmington, MO.

The MFT A5 took us right to the hotel, the Garmin showed that we were in a field.

It is a newer building that used to be in a field.

We had a funny one when we were in Winnipeg. On our way out of town to come home we wanted to stop at Tim Horton's for coffee/breakfast. So I asked the nav to find POIs "Tim Horton's". It came back with a ton of results and we picked the closest one at started getting directions. As we were nearing the address indicate by the nav my wife was commenting that she didn't expect there to be a Tim Horton's in that area because it was leading us into a subdivision. And sure enough the address that the GPS took us to was someone's house in the subdivision. Someone named Tim Horton perhaps??

Are these SD card updates purely for road/POI/map data or would it have any effect on the functionality (e.g., the way SiriusXM traffic reroutes or the routing engine itself for optimal routes)?

Hi bz101,

 

Although the SD card doesn't contain traffic information, it can affect how your routes are calculated. If you choose to reroute after receiving information from SiriusXM Traffic, the system will use the map information from the SD card in order to calculate the best route.

 

Maybe Kim, our Ford IVT Rep, could comment on that. I sure don't know.

You should never need the Nav to take you to a Tim Horton's in Canada. Just look to your left. If you don't see one, look to your right. There it is!

Hahahaha I know! I wish we had them in Minnesota. I hear that they're opening a Tim Horton's in Fargo soon. I hope it's only a matter of time before they make it to Minneapolis. Outside of her family, Tim Horton's is what my wife misses most about Canada.

Heading west from MO both GPS (MFT & Garmin) took me to the wrong address in OK City, OK. Turned out the HIExpress was new and on a new street and the desk clerk had to give me the older street & number next to it, then I found it. She said it happens all the time.

 

Going East both GPS units updated Time Zones automatically to MDT and then to CDT. (On Highways I-15N & I-70E)

Going West both units updated to MDT but the MFT Nav did not update to the correct AZ time on I-40W, the Garmin did.

AZ is the only state that doesn't use DST, it always stays in Mountain Standard Time - confusing.

(Both my GPS units are set to automatically change to DST as required)

As I noted above, I bought an A5 card so I could have the latest updates on map data.

 

I checked a specific road on the map today and was disappointed.

 

In northern VA, the Fairfax County Parkway changed from VA Rt 7100 to VA Rt 286 in August 2012 -- looked on the map today with the A5 card in there, still shows it as Rt 7100 despite the numbering being changed almost 2 years ago.

Installed the A5 card yesterday (a non dealer purchase). Seems to work with no issues so far. But we'll see. The A4 had some issues with the address were I work. I had to offset the address to get it to mark the correct turn for entry to the property.
