How are the Energi's selling vs the FFH?

I ask because when I was waiting for the PCM update at my dealer the other day I took a stroll in their new car Sales lot out front.

They had 25 Energi's out there, I counted them twice because I'd never seen so many in one place.

Many had Lease signs at $299@ month, $3k at signing - pretty darn low I thought.

A salesman came out and when he found out I had a Hybrid he turned sort of apologetic about the Energi's.

He brought up the small trunk, lower highway mpg's and called them 'a specialty car for certain drivers'.

 

With 25 Energi models out front either my Dealer was optimistic about sales or they are stuck with them, I don't know which.

But leasing them so cheap makes me wonder.

I noted something similar in another thread around here somewhere, that I have been keeping an eye on the inventory of Energis at the dealer where I got my FFH, and also the dealer where we got my wife's FFE. They aren't moving very well, as one dealer's chain has 19 (had 20 for the past 2-3 weeks so yippee they sold one) and the other dealer has 14 (I think they had 12 when we bought her FFE in April) -- low sales also evidenced by the sales numbers of about 400 per month nationwide for the past few months. I guess the sticker shock combined with the smaller trunk is a show-stopper for most.

What is interesting, the dealer CC got his FFH from is EV certified, and the one sales guy I talked to said they could order only so many, He was also not too eager to sell one stating they have to pay for their EV chargers somehow. Made me not want to buy from him. Just did a quick search, there are 41 available near me. The one I referenced has 7 on the lot, ranging from 40K to 43K.

 

A HyTiE with just moonroof, nav and Blis is 41K, 43K to get what I have in my HyTi. That is 7K more for the Energi model to my HyTi. It would take a lot of driving to make up that big a difference.

If ford could do the tax rebate and get that money for you on a purchase I bet they would sell better.

True, but the 2013 Energi incentives are $1,500 more than the Hybrid ($2,500 vs $1,000) and add the Federal tax credit of $3,750 for the Energi which shrinks the cost difference by $5,250. Some states also have additional incentives.

 

There doesn't appear to be much of a mileage difference. I've consistently beat EPA in pure hybrid mode getting mid 40s to low 50s but this is my first hybrid with only 1,600 miles so far. I still drive in the fast lane and keep up with traffic (70-85 MPH) with MPG secondary at this point.

It is only subtracted on a lease deal.

 

It's a tax credit so you have to owe at least $3750 in taxes to get it all back the following year. Credits do carry forward so you would eventually get it all back.

 

Of course anyone that can afford the car probably pays more than $3750 in taxes.

Up here in Canada they've got it set up so that the price difference between comparable FFH and Energi models with the same equipment is almost exactly the same as the Ontario rebate of $5808. So basically in Ontario you can get an Energi for the same price as an FFH, since the incentive is not actually a tax rebate, it's a straight-up check that they send you or even to the dealer to reduce your payment.

 

But I'm still leaning towards the FFH, since the Energi's trunk isn't going to fit my kid's stroller.

It's very disappointing to me that Ford isn't selling more hybrids and Energis overall. I think part of the problem is their allocation system. In Virgina, SoCal and other areas there is an abundance of Energis, but up here in MN the dealers can barely keep 1 or 2 hybrids on the lot and quite a few only got allocation for 1 Energi for the entire 2013 model year. That is just ridiculous. Ford would sell a lot more hybrids and Energis here in MN if they would allocate enough that the dealers could have some inventory. The largest dealer in the state, where our FFH came from and where my parents bought their C-Max Energi was only allocated 3 C-Max Energis and 2 Fusion Energi for the entire 2013 model year. And they're the largest Ford dealer in the region! I've checked their inventory periodically since we bought our FFH and they've never had more than 2 C-Max Hybrids or FFHs in stock at one time. Quite often they have 0 in stock and their website only shows "incoming vehicles". Ford needs to make some changes in their dealer allocation system.

 

They currently have 1 C-Max Hybrid, 1 C-Max Energi, 1 Fusion Hybrid and 1 Fusion Energi in their inventory.

I was looking at the FF energi to buy one but it was the tiny trunk that made me steer clear. Plus I would not have a plug in at work. Mostly it was the trunk that unsold that car for me

I guess if you dont own two vehicles, the trunk could be a disadvantage. Only time I stuffed the trunk in the HyTi was going to MN, and only because my Flex was in the shop getting deer damage repaired. Other than that, I dont think the trunk space would be a factor for us. The trunk in the Fusion is surprisingly deep, I have a cargo organizer on the battery shelf and still have plenty of room left for shopping.

Ha! Damn sales people, when I shopped for my FFH the sales people wanted to sell me a turbo Fusion instead and they said they most likely wouldn't be ordering any Hybrid's at all. I went somewhere else.
