jeff_h Report post Posted June 11, 2013 I've seen 3.29 as the low around here this week. I have a 40 cent/gallon discount coupon at one of the grocery chains, so I'm hoping to see a 2 as the first number in my gas price for the first time in a long time next time I fill up. I read an interesting article last week about states that use a gas tax. Apparently some law makers want to start adding additional fees to owners of hybrid and electric vehicles to recoup the taxes "lost" in gasoline purchases that their owners are not making. Perhaps that has been discussed here, I didn't search, just thought it was interesting. Yep they got me, renewed my registration last week, cost an additional $64 for the year over what a conventional car would cost. As for gas, it was at $3.259 at the cheap stations the other day, however looking on gasbuddy they are now up to $3.319 - 6¢ in a couple days but still nowhere near 4 bucks, geez those guys are getting hosed. murphy Report post Posted June 11, 2013 Yep they got me, renewed my registration last week, cost an additional $64 for the year over what a conventional car would cost. That fee is very unfair. Someone who drives less than 4000 miles a year pays the same as someone that drives 25000 miles per year. Fortunately, for me, I only visit VA twice a year and don't live there. I live in PA and have to report the current odometer reading when I renew my registration. They could base the fee on the number of miles driven in the preceeding year. It also gets reported by the inspection station during the yearly safety and emissions inspection. I am not against paying for road maintenance. I am against paying more than my fair share. 2 hybridbear and acdii reacted to this
acdii Report post Posted June 11, 2013 I wouldn't mind paying a little extra if they actually repaired the roads! This is my main beef about any new taxes. Spend the money they get now on what it was originally destined for! Of course if you want to see real action, take away the politicians pay, and you will see things change QUICKLY! dalesky Report post Posted June 12, 2013 Still staying around 3.15 here. Dreading the price shock when visit MN and ND (aka frozen tundra) next week. Last year we rented a Focus hatchback and got an actual average of 40mpg on the highway. Today on a short trip home I averaged 59mpg. Gas prices aren't quite as scary as they used to be at least. rico567 Report post Posted June 14, 2013 (edited) We saw $4.5X in downtown Chicago last weekend (I filled up before we left, so I'm not lining the coffers of Emmanuel & Co.), but it's still around $4.15 here, with diesel continuing to hang around $3.89. The most likely thing I heard was the theory about a perfect storm of refinery shutdowns in this part of the country producing the price spike. Of course, for every tinfoil hat (and there are many) there's some deep, dark conspiracy afoot. acdii Report post Posted June 14, 2013 I dont think the foil is strong enough, so I made mine out of aluminum panels from the B-17. Noticed a 10 cent drop this week, now its down to 4.19. I filled last night at Cost Savers for $4.26 for 89 Octane, the difference between Harvard and Sharon isnt worth the trip now.
mokee Report post Posted June 14, 2013 Home town prices for regular E10 range today $4.499 - $4.299 with the closest station at $4.299. Our Costco (in the next town west) is 6 cents a gallon less then Monday at $4.239.
neod192 Report post Posted June 14, 2013 They're dropping in MI too. 3.83 at the cheapest Speedway around here, 3.81 @ Sam's Club & 3.90 at Costco (this might be lower today).

acdii Report post Posted June 18, 2013 Well thats fracking good. Not going to help with gas prices though since fracking is more for natural gas than oil. Last night I saves .40 a gallon going across the state line. $.08 at a station close to my house, which was actually .20 cheaper than all the others, but the one in Wi, was $3.68. mokee Report post Posted June 18, 2013 I just filled the truck up at Costco for $4.18 a gallon, down 2 cents from yesterday. It still bothers me that gas is 50 cents a gallon less over the state line - those fracking oil companies.
kuzzi Report post Posted June 18, 2013 Filled up the bike, $3.69 for premium, diesel at $3.59, regular at $3.39.

TX NRG Report post Posted June 19, 2013 Well thats fracking good. Not going to help with gas prices though since fracking is more for natural gas than oil. Fracking nat gas created such a glut that cratered prices a couple years back that growth in wells fell off considerably. The focus shifted more to horizontal drilling and fracking shale oil in ND and old, previously exploited and largely abandoned formations which resulted last year in the biggest increase in US oil production in its history. That helped to keep US oil prices averaging around $94/bbl vs $111/bbl in Europe. hybridbear Report post Posted June 19, 2013 If you think prices are bad where you are check out what we've paid the last few tanks in Canada by clicking on my Fuelly badge below...over $5/gal. And the numbers I've posted on Fuelly is Canadian dollars per gallon. Since the exchange rate is basically 1:1 right now it should show up roughly the same on the credit card statement. And we've been in th part of Canada with less expensive gas. Other provinces have it worse
kuzzi Report post Posted June 19, 2013 (edited) I don't know if it's true, but I've heard that Canada is drilling underneath the Great Lakes, but the US blocks this from happening. I won't put much merit to this though. Still, the cheapest immediately across the border is Southeast Ontario area, which is equivalent around $4.80/gal http://www.gasbuddy.com/gb_can_gastemperaturemap.aspx Alberta has large amounts of Oil Sands, which are difficult to extract, but current oil prices justify the expense. This is also where the Keystone Pipeline starts and is currently operational and providing these crude reserves to the refineries in Illinois. The XL extension could reduce the allotment to these Ill refineries. Edited June 19, 2013 by kuzzi
kuzzi Report post Posted June 22, 2013 $3.35 in Katy, TX. Tank average just above 38mpg with a lead foot. Odd thing, my card wasn't accepted at two previous stations for unknown reasons. I drove to the next station with the fuel door open. I did not notice any warning to that effect.
dalesky Report post Posted June 22, 2013 Went from Mpls MN to Bismarck ND, where the prices went from $3.50 to $3.80. ND is rich and getting richer from crude, and is building TWO refineries. The first in the U.S. since 1976. Maybe when they are online prices will reflect reality more closely.
