cracking noise

I sent the TSB bulletin and link above to service manager at my dealership yesterday and he replied and has already ordered the parts to resolve. Hopefully it will be a quick and effective fix!

I took a closer look at the pics and now know why it makes the clicking sound. The mating face on the shaft is flat, and the mating surface on the bearing must have a slight taper, so torquing to specs would not fully seat the shaft to the hub, and over tightening the shaft nut would distort the bearing, so you could never fully resolve it without the washer. It has a taper to it to make up the difference.

 

For those who have had service done already where they tightened everything, and "fixed" the Click, you might want to take it back since they may have distorted the wheel bearings in doing so.

Just stopped by my dealer Kerry Ford in Cincinnati and the service manager pulled up the bulletin on this issue. He told me the fix is just a washer that needs to be installed for vehicles built before April 2013. Made an appointment for this Thursday.

As an update, I just recieved a call from the service manager who said they needed to order the parts. He said the parts are not expected to arrive until July but they are on emergency order and may arrive sooner. I asked him why he didn't just order the parts before having me bring the car in. He said they had to verify a measurement first before ordering. I wonder how true that is. Oh well, the wait and pongs continue until then.

Didn't you say earlier your build date was in February, which would include your vehicle in the TSB.

What he said. Plus, my service advisor is saying my car already has these shims. So that means something else is causing my noise.

My build date was five days before the TSB implies that the manufacturing defect was remedied, darn it. I'll be asking that these washers be installed,if there's room for them, before I hear any noise. However, the Bulletin says nothing about checking to see if they'll fit, so the statement by cincidaddi's service guy perplexes me. I figure that after those noises occur, damage to the half shafts may already have occurred. Wouldn't preventive maintenance make sense here?

Ford has decided that all cars within certain dates are candidates for this repair, hence the TSB.

All cars within those dates supposedly don't have the correct components in the hub assembly (thrust washer).

There is the 'potential' of this noise problem starting at a later date though wear.

I would take my car in for the repair.

FYI, my dealership indicated that the parts for the TSB specified above are on back order until mid to late June.

Same with my dealer. But, here's the rub. They ran my VIN and said it didn't qualify for the "fix" My FFH was built 11/17. They didn't have the TSB so I provided them with two copies. The hybrid specialist drove the car and heard the snap-crackle-pop noise and decided to perform the work.....when the parts become available.

Strange. My dealer got the parts between last Saturday and yesterday -- one business day. I haven't been able to get in there for the work, but this makes me wonder if they ordered and received the wrong "thrust washer."

Since they have it waiting for you to bring the car in, ask to see the parts. Did they want to look at the car before the ordered the parts? My dealer wouldn't order anything until they can confirm the car has the issue described in the TSB. I dropped it off this morning ...

My dealer hasn't needed to see the vehicle for any parts they've ordered. They order the leather shift knob, the tail light and various door trim pieces in advance of me bringing the car in so that it would spend less time at the dealer.

That's nice... My dealer told me they can't order the parts w/out inspecting the vehicle because if it turns out they're not needed they end up paying for the parts. I guess it makes sense, but is that really saving them money considering they're paying for a rental car? Or is the dealer getting reimbursed by Ford for the rental car?

 

I think last time I got a rental the service dept billed the sales dept for it. It makes sense for Ford to reimburse under the warranty claim.

The dealer doesn't pay for the rental. I wonder if maybe my dealer is just planning to hang on to the parts in their parts inventory if not needed. Who knows...

 

If you need a rental for warranty work the dealer pays the local Enterprise branch but then the dealer is reimbursed by Ford Corporate for those costs

Well I can't be exact but I didn't notice it until about 5200 miles. And here I thought I had avoided it.
