Topping off the gas, fuel gauge issue

I found it take at least 10 fills before the fill rate stabilizes. It also depends on the pump, some pump too fast which causes it to back up the fill tube. There is one pump where I get gas that I cannot use, fills so fast that it clicks off in 3 seconds.

Thanks for the information. Here in oregon they won't let us pump our own gas. I do on my motorcycle but cars no. I have been able to talk them into letting me do it the last two fills and what a difference.

I've had the same thing happen at a number of different gas stations. Very annoying.

Actually Oregon is on the low end nationaly for gas prices. Although they have risen just like everyone else the last month or so. Glad I bought a hybrid!

Of course, when I think about it, I use 1/4 gallon of fuel, to save 1 gallons worth in cost, but the taxes dont go to the corrupt state of IL! :) See, madness to my method!

No, Nick is worse off than you are, his is under 30. Short trips in this car or murder on fuel economy. Wait until warmer weather and it will improve.

This should make you feel a little better, your odometer is off by 1.5-2%(you can check it with GPS) which is about .5mpg better than what your calculating.. When temps get in 70's you will be impressed how much your MPG's improve. Here in Atlanta area our temps go up and down every week (30-70deg.F). My daily average goes from 40 to low 50's what a difference.

Yes. Even when the car has said only 20 miles to Empty I've found that the most I can put in is about 11.5 gallons and that brings the fuel level above the top line on the gauge on the dash. This appears to be normal

How many gal does your trip gauge say you used?

Filled mine tonight, 3 clicks, I waited about a minute between clicks and added another gallon. I usually just stop at the first click, but noticed it is under the full mark by the time I get home 11 miles from the station. Its over the top now, but skewed my MPG readings.

 

Recalculated what it would have read at first click to what is is full up, and it 38 vs 34.7. So at least I know this last tank was 3 above average.

Yeah, thought of that after I filled it up DOH. Look it knocked it down to under 35 :( Even though this tank was much higher than the previous who knows how many.

It varies quite a bit from tank to tank. Some tanks the trip meter says I used 1 gallon more than pump and others say I've used a gallon less...All in all the car is very accurate. My Lifetime Summary shows 41.7, fuelly shows 41.9. My Lifetime Summary at the start of this tank said 41.9, dead on with fuelly. I reset the Lifetime Summary when we got the car, right in line with when I started fuelly tracking. Overall, I find it to be very accurate

Funny thing is, since I got the car back, now my Scangauge and car are almost identical in the MPG readings, or now the SG shows higher then the car. I probably need to recalibrate it now since I removed it when the car was on the lot and it was driven without it for a while. In any case, it looks to be more accurate than it has been.

I just refilled and this and the last tank I force fed as much gas as was reasonable and got 12+ gallons compared to the first few at 9 gallons. Much better. MPG is now over 31 WAWHO!

Be careful with the overfilling of the tank. There is supposed to be an air pocket above the fuel to allow for fuel expansion in hot weather. You don't want that expensive gasoline being forced out the filler neck and running down the side of the car in hot weather. It's a really helpless feeling to arrive at your car and see fuel coming out and not have any way to stop it. It happened to me once but will never happen again.

Thanks for the heads up. My car should be used to full fillup now not the 9 gallon fillup as the first few fillups.

If we trully have a 13 gallon tank that means that when the DTE reads 0 miles there would still be 2 gallons in the tank. Or else we're never actually filling the tank...this is another concern...

 

Has anyone else experienced similar results? What's the most gallons you've been able to put in at one fill-up?

Ive filled mine at 10 to E and 6 to E and its been 11.1-11.3 gallons every time. Next time Im going to run it past E a little ways..
