Gas Prices?

That would be news to me with paying taxes. I'm very sure that on the three cars I bought here I paid taxes based on my address. Which makes the most sense because why on earth would you then buy a car in Cook County if you drive 10 min and save 3%.

In Missouri we pay taxes based on where you live. Also the sales tax is paid separately from the cost of the car. It is always a shock when you go to register the car after buying it and you are told the taxes due are $800.

 

When I bought my F150, I bought it in Northern Illinois and the dealer at first wanted to charge me sales tax and I had to tell him a couple times that I live out of state and the truck would be titled in Missouri, so I did not end up paying sales tax twice on the truck.

I guess it could vary by location, but I thought tax was universally applied where the vehicle was registered. Otherwise states like Delaware (no sales tax) would be selling vehicles through the roof to neighboring states.

Vehicle sales tax in MN is fixed statewide & doesn't vary across the state like regular sales tax. When you lease a vehicle your sales tax varies based on zip code of your residence at start of lease. While our sales tax in Minneapolis is pushing 8%, in St Paul the sales tax is almost 1% lower IIRC. In outstate MN it's still close to the 6.5% that's charged on cars.

 

With used cars you pay when transferring title. For new cars you pay dealer and they remit the money to the state. It's really interesting to learn how it works in different states. I'm now more prepared should we ever decide to move somewhere else.

In PA the sales tax (6%) on a new car is on the price of the new car (before document fees, title and license fees, etc) minus the trade-in value of the car traded to the dealer.

They get the tax on the traded in car from its subsequent purchaser usually at a higher price due to dealer markup.

In my case, I get a refund back on the taxes and license fees, so not overly concerned over the difference, but good to know now that is a different rate buying in a different county here.

Yes, he was responsible for the $99.00 cap on license tab fee for cars but it was later rescinded (in 2008, I think). Tab fees can far exceed $99.00 now.

I'm actually amazed at the difference in gas prices, even within the same neighborhoods - there are 3 stations within a mile west of my home that are charging $3.53-$3.55 for regular. The station across the street is charging $3.69. And 1/2 mile east is charging $3.75. And the worst one is $3.81. That is a difference of $0.28 a gallon! I never remember such drastic fluctuations all in the same zip code.

The FFH license fees were in excess of $400 for one year. The Prius was only a few dollars cheaper, about $375/year IIRC.

Our neighborhood is the same. We live in an area with a lot of restaurants, hotels, the first indoor mall in the world and other tourist attractions which means a lot of foreign license plates and confused drivers on the roads. It also means sky-high gas prices. We never fill up at any of the gas stations near our house because they're consistently $0.20/gallon higher than stations 2-3 miles away, out of the high traffic area.

Where I get my gas they have 89, 91, and 93 Octane, no 87 Octane. The price for their regular(89) with a discount if you buy $20 of groceries is less than the surrounding stations 87 Octane. The only time I have not filled from there was when I went to MN.

Just got back from a trip to St. Louis. Saw gas prices along the way from $3.11 to $3.49 per gallon.

If you look at our Fuelly tanks you'll see ridiculously low prices for gas because we're always using our fuel rewards from the grocery store. Often times we have $.50-$.70 off per gallon in the price per gallon numbers posted on Fuelly.

Lowest seen on my trip, $1.78. I can't wait until the weather clears and I can start driving the FFH again, then I can actually save some cash. Even though the price is much lower, it still costs a small fortune to drive the T 100 miles a day.
