OK, now I'm confused. Why can't you use your cell phone to download a destination to the Nav using an app? OK, OK, because it tells you you're in motion, right? My phone screen isn't locked out or anything. All I do is enter the destination in "Send to Car" and click on send (if driving, my passenger can do this). Then press the sync button on the steering wheel and say "Services" when it prompts, and it automatically connects to sync services and downloads the destination to the nav. On the Nav screen, you will see "download complete" and you will hear sync services disconnect. Press "Set as Dest" on the MFT screen and you're done. You can't do that?

 

If not, maybe it's because Sync Destinations was provided by Ford and it checks to see if you are in motion somehow. Send to Car was created by a smart individual and is not related to Ford in any way. Maybe it doesn't have motion detection capability. Try it.

Sync Destinations sometimes locks you out and gives a message about the car being in motion. You also cannot type an address in on the MFT screen while moving. That's all I was saying. I was just trying to summarize it concisely.

It's free for Android in the Play Store. I don't know about the Apple version. I guess that's why Apple now has the most money on the planet! :)

 

The author of the Android version is Julien Vanier. Is that the same on iTunes?

 

EDIT: My son tells me there's a "compatibility checker" (free) on iTunes App Store and yes the app is 3.99. He also said something about the nav system having to be internet connected but it does list Ford, Lincoln, Mercury as supported vehicles. Read the app description.

 

Here's what it says in the (Android) app description: "This app lets you send an address from Google Maps directly to the navigation system of your vehicle so you don't have to manually type it in. This functionality exists in the web version of Google Maps, but not in the Android version. This app brings the Send to Car feature to Android. This app is free, open-source and doesn't have ads." Supported vehicle makes in the US: Audi, BMW (BMW Assist), SYNC: Ford, Lincoln and Mercury, Mercedes-Benz (mbrace), Nissan, Infiniti (Connection). Onstar: Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, GMC, Hummer, Pontiac, Saab and Saturn

Send to Car for Android is FREE. (At least our copies were.) I have noticed many an app that are FREE for android, but Apple has to get their money grubbing fingers into them for the iPhone and iPad. :)

HB already uses Sync Services which is free for 3 years (1 year starting with MY '16). Why not use it for something useful for free? Besides, if you're driving a $40K+ (sticker) car, you can't afford $3.99? Really? ;) Edited March 19, 2015 by TonyHzNV

Well you see, to each his own.

I have yet to find anything I want or need the car to do that it won't do WITHOUT Sync. Services.

The cost is not the issue. It is that I have enough "features" and gadgets to screw with now and don't need any more.

The only thing I ever used Sync Services for was turn by turn navigation... but that was before I had a Nav system.

Well if you've ever wanted to download a destination to your Nav system while driving, Sync Services will do it in conjunction with the (android) Send to Car app. Don't know about the Apple version yet. Apparently the Sync Destinations app won't let you dowload into a moving vehicle. With Send to Car, your passenger can enter a destination in the app on your smartphone and dowload it to the Nav system while you are driving. This can be handy on long trips. You can't enter destinations on the touchscreen while moving. I agree that Sync Services in and of itself is pretty useless, but this is at least a handy use for it. If the GPS/location is turned off for the App, then it will work. Sync Destinations doesnt need location in order for it to send to car, it just needs it for locating the car and a few of the other things it provides, such as dealer finder and roadside assistance.

I think acdii is saying that the iOS Sync Destinations app detects vehicle motion via phone GPS. I will try it and see. When you turn off access to location data for the app it gives you an annoying popup every time you open the app.

When we need to deviate from the planned route, I just hit the mute button......conveniently on the main screen now......and my passenger plugs the new destination into her phone and a different voice takes over. :)

I too just got the offer for the "new" A6 update.

 

Let's see, have owned the car for 2.5 years, used maps twice (once to test it out, once to actually find something).

 

For that price, I could afford to make the trip to AAA and unfold a paper map. Oh, wait, lookie - I have several free turn by turn apps on my iPhone and they play well over bluetooth. PASS on A6!

 

Seriously, for what we pay for these systems in the first place, a free or low priced download, tied to my serial number (to prevent piracy) would seem reasonable. The $150 price point is quite possibly only appealing to someone using their vehicle for deliveries.
