Navigation Map A6

Recommended Posts

Expensive quarterly updates and we don't even know how accurate / up to date they are.

With the many times that all my data has been wiped out on my MFT (like removing the dashboard for the HVAC repair, etc ) I only use the MFT Nav as backup if my Garmin fails.

No more card updates for me thank you.

Awww, come on guys! I was just bein' facetious up there. You really think I'm gonna pay that kind of money quarterly? No way José!

That's my problem with these updates. There's no indication of if/how any changes will be of any significance or benefit to me on the routes I travel. So, it's more or less a $150 crapshoot. No thanks. A4 still gets me where I need to go and Google Maps gives me more info for free.

This was sent to Ford Navigation maps

I have the Garmin NUVI 1690 and i purchased the lifetime updates for ONE PRICE and the updates come out at least 4 times a year,

How come you don't have lifetime updates with MFT Navigation as i would be happy to purchase this service

In addition i was able to purchase the A5 update for about $50.00 back in May 2014 and it's authentic so excuses be careful what you buy doesn't fly.

If they respond

No deals with lombardoford $131.82 + 19.85(Shipping)=$151.67

Ford Direct $149.00 + 3.95 (Shipping)=$152.95 at least where i live

The portability of the Garmin (and others) is a big advantage in my opinion. You can take it with you to any car, the boat, and even use it as a pedestrian. And the lifetime map updates are free. The less elegant placement sitting on the dash (or windshield) is only a minor inconvenience to me.

That's one of the nice things about Sync 3, from what I've read on CNet.com anyway......you'll be able to project Google Maps onto the Sync 3 MFT screen (via bluetooth+Sync 3 Applink) and use your phone for nav using the vehicle's screen. You won't even have to buy the nav system. That should make a lot of people happy. Of course, you'll have to buy a car update. Now THAT will cost a little more than a map update! :)

What really surprises me in all of these navigation discussions that nobody seems to use the smart phone apps like Goggle maps, Maps or MotionX GPS etc.

What's today's advantage of a dedicated GPS device vs. using the one on your phone? Obviously it requires a smartphone and a data connection.

Maybe this should be in it's own thread but that question is very interesting to me.

OK, CC, I agree. I'm starting a new topic......"What do you use for Nav?"

I found paper maps work best! You can see where the road goes the entire length of the trip, instead of the little bit on the screen. Thats my gripe on nav systems. Of course if you dont know how to read a map, it just looks like a lot of squiggly lines.

Yeah but you have to be careful not to block the windshield and it's kinda hard to handle the map while you're driving. I learned that a long time ago in a helicopter! :)

What more do you want? The do update the name of the card, A4, A5, A6. That cost them alot of money apparently.

I never use sync, Its way more trouble than pushing buttons. I have to continually repeat my question, and while Im at it finding and pushing button on the screen is not as safe then not having it in the first place. I never had any problems even taking my eyes off the road to find the air condition switch or temp adjustment. To me anyway sync is very distracting. About the only thing I like about it is Bluetooth and the backup camera. I use my garman gps and the dash button for temp control. Im wondering if I could just pull the whole thing out and put in a double din all in one that has gps and uses igo maps, I would get backup camera, radio, gps, Bluetooth, sd card, usb port, even dvd for under $200, couldn't work worse. Id just have to go to a 1" smaller screen.

The money obtained by a bank robber is authentic money. That doesn't mean it was acquired legitimately.

Does a brain surgeon need to be involved in $149.00 vs $50.00?

Apparently, since you're not getting my point.

If I break the window of a Fusion in the parking lot, open the door and pull out the map card, I can then sell it on ebay for $50. If you buy it, you will have an authentic card. Are you suggesting this is a method Ford should use to reduce their prices?

As Hillary once said, What difference does it make? It appears someone has access to these and is selling them at or near cost.

When i buy something at auction such as ebay, i bid and hope that i win it and i don't ask the seller if this is stolen or on the black market then deal me out. Do you??!!! I can imagine the "polite response i will get." If i go to Macy's and see a sweater for $100 and then go to Walmart and see the same identical sweater minus the label for $35.00 assuming i know clothes fairly well should i go to the manager and tell him he's dealing with blackmarket items or stolen items.

I am suggesting that Ford should give lifetime updates and i am "willing to pay for that service" as i get with my Garmin Nuvi. They could provide a download service where i would have to purchase my own SD card and they would tell me in the download save it on the harddrive and then expand to where my SD card is on the computer. For those that are uncomfortable go to the dealer and have them do this with the knowledge that it will cost more. Ford had done this with new sync updates from Gen v2-3.6.2 to Gen v2 3.7 and one can do this on their own or see the dealer and Ford is very capable if they wanted to install this service.

$149 for each map update is a ripoff in my book and when i started the topic A5 update last year and indicated i had A5, "Where did you get it was the #1 question.

I can wait for A7 to come out and get A6 for a lot less then $149.00 because eventually it will happen and i am willing to bet that since people in the Forum know that A6 is out they are surely looking for a cheaper cost.

Just a guess.

If A7 comes out in June or July tell me with a straight face that $149.00 is reasonable.

That is a great suggestion and when Sync 3 comes out it will have self-downloading capability so this will be a lot simpler. But this is all about business, if Ford thought they would make more money selling lifetime updates they would do it. Ford doesn't have the same leverage as Garmin or the other Nav companies when it comes to negotiating terms with the map providers, so you can't compare OEMs to Garmin, they operate on different business models.

My only point is that you can't say "$149 is a ripoff and unreasonable" when you don't know the true costs involved.

Ford map update page indicate once a year new update come out and this is from their own website under FAQ

2. How often are new map updates released?

Updates are available approximately once a year. Contact us if you want to be kept informed when your new map update is released.

The A5 supposedly came out in May/June 2014 and this is January 2015 and A6 is out , any bets that A7 comes out before the year is finished.?

In simplest terms "Greed"

Yep, I'll take that bet.

The A5 card was late, the A6 card was on time. The A7 card will be one year from now. It's a pretty simple process, they freeze the data at the same point in time and then format it for the card. For some reason the A5 was late, I suspect it was because as with all other MFT things, there are a very limited number of resources working on a very large number of issues.

On Ford's older nav system the updates have been very regular and once every year. They also cost the same and have for 7 years.

This is a quote from the Ford IVT (Kim) found here: http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/9482-nav-map-updates/?p=90713

Hey nv rick,

The A5 card was not officially being installed in all new vehicles until October, when it was released at: www.Navigation.com It sounds like your vehicle came equipped with the correct navigation card, but you can certainly check with the dealership that you purchased the vehicle from to make sure. It can't hurt! :)

Released in October, New version in January. Late? Yeah, I'd say that's pretty late! It was already pretty late in May of 14. And how did people start getting it in May? I know we've been all over this already, but if navigation.com actually had this ready for distribution in May, which we know they did now, why hold it until October? I bought a car in July and 6 mos later there's 2 newer versions of the map card than I got with my car. Just not right, Waldo. It's just not right!

Smash a window? How droll... Take your A4 go to the first morning of a car show, they usually forget it in at least one car, swap their A6 for your A4, it takes them weeks to figure it out. ;)

I bet the ebay people get theirs from either wrecks or lots of test drives. #supercynical

Sorry that doesn't cut it, Ford is no rinky dink company, they are very capable of doing it if they were to put their mind to it and that is providing a d/l service to install your own maps if you pay for that service, however Ford is not there for your benefit, they are out for their own benefits. They could very easily sit down and figure out how much to charge John/Jane Doe for lifetime updates and still make a profit.

That of course would require computer programming, however the easy way out is to charge $149 for each SD card update and not do computer programming.

Ford is not "greedy", how much do they charge for services in the Ford Fusion when it's time to renew, how much do they charge for the Lincoln MKZ for the same services?

BTW i just used Garmin Express and found out there is a new update for nuvi 1690, connected my Garmin nuvi 1690 via usb to my computer and d/l 2015.30 US and Canada ~ 1 hr.
