LEM Report post Posted August 20, 2013 I just got a bill for the property taxes of my cars... I could not believe it when I saw that thetaxes for the Fusion that I bought in June es $469.90! My other car, a 2003 Jetta is $28.64.This is crazy. That I have to pay that amount of money every 6 months. Before I call them to be sure that's the right amount, I wanted to check with you guys to see how much you are paying.I live in Northern Virginia. Thanks
jeff_h Report post Posted August 20, 2013 Feel the love buddy, I'm paying that on each car. Don't forget you'll pay the additional $64 per year hybrid tax when you renew registration, gotta love it.
Aquineas Report post Posted August 20, 2013 (edited) Personal Property taxes on cars? In Texas we pay an annual registration of about $75-80 (depending on which county you're in). Well, that and the initial sales tax on the car, which I believe is 6.5 percent. Edited August 20, 2013 by Aquineas

Yes, I pay that on each car every 6 months - one of the quirks of VA and probably a few other states.
kuzzi Report post Posted August 20, 2013 Is that $400+ typical for new vehicles, or just hybrids?
jeff_h Report post Posted August 20, 2013 (edited) Is that $400+ typical for new vehicles, or just hybrids? Any vehicle based on the current KBB/NADA value (each county sets its own rate but I think they are pretty close to one another), so it will go down slightly each time... but still sucks. kuzzi Report post Posted August 20, 2013 I see. Good to know it's not a "hybrid tax premium". Is this an incentive for people in VA to lease instead of own? Or is this paid for leased vehicles as well? Taxes for my rig were less than $2000 so paying that property tax fee for more than 3 years would make me consider moving to another state. 1 Aquineas reacted to this

Since this is based on cars registered, I *think* it also applies to leases (have never leased so not sure)...
hybridbear Report post Posted August 20, 2013 Wow!! In MN our yearly registration is more expensive for newer cars and more expensive cars. On our brand new FFH the first year registration was around $400. Next year will be above $350. While that is high compared to other states it isn't as bad as what you're paying in Virginia... If you drive an old beater it only costs you $40/year for registration in MN. I'd think the state would want to discourage people from hanging onto their old cars by charging them more as the car gets older. Especially since we don't have emissions testing or safety inspections to make sure the cars on the road are safe.
Eddie Sessum Report post Posted August 20, 2013 In CA i believe there is no tax on the hybrids. But yea down here we pay sales tax instead of property tax. In MN isnt that a no fault insurance state?

Funny because I was thinking we would be paying less because it's a hybrid car...
aaronj1159 Report post Posted August 21, 2013 It's really weird to me how Va deals with hybrids. I would have had a substantial tax break if I was still living in WV, but not so in VA. In VA it seems like I pay more because of that choice.
hermans Report post Posted August 21, 2013 Here in PA the registration fee is $36.00/year and no hybrid tax.......yet
Eddie Sessum Report post Posted August 21, 2013 I have heard states charge more property tax based on hybrid or EV. Due to the fact you pay less in gas taxes...
murphy Report post Posted August 21, 2013 PA got rid of their personal property taxes a long time ago. They were only on intangible property like stocks and bonds.I paid a 6% sales tax on the difference between the price of the new car and what the dealer gave me for the old car.The state gave me a $1000 grant for buying a PHEV.The electric company gave me $50 for telling them I have a PHEV.My vehicle registration renewal cost $36.00The safety and emission inspection was free for the new car but will be about $50 in subsequent years. Not looking forward to my property tax bill that is due next month, and here in Fairfax the yearly amount is due in a single payment.
djminfll Report post Posted August 21, 2013 In Florida, we pay the same annual registration fee, which varies by what type of vehicle, vehicle weight, and type of license plate you have (Florida has literally dozens of specialty plates which carry a premium that goes towards supporting the organization. For example, Save the Manatees, State of the Arts, College Teams, etc.) Fees vary from about $50 to $100. Florida also offers benefits to drivers of hybrid vehicles, like a permit to drive alone in the carpool lane and waiving the tolls for the Express Lanes. I actually think these benefits should be based on the mpg of the vehicle rather than hybrid based. A Lexus SUV hybrid that gets 28 highway mpg gets these beneifts, and a VW Diesel that gets 45-50 mpg doesn't get them. Paying an annual tax of over $400 is insane, who the heck can afford that? jeff68007 Report post Posted August 21, 2013 In Nebraska it will be $580 for my Hybrid Titanium, plus 5.5% sales tax (live in the county so I avoid the city tax).
kuzzi Report post Posted August 21, 2013 Geez, if this trickles its way into Texas, I'm going to just buy antique rollers and make a half-assed restoration with a kubota diesel in each one. That would cost me about 3 or 4 years worth of these property taxes on new vehicles.

I don't get too excited over it, as each state has its own way of revenue generation, whether it's sales tax, property tax, personal property tax, income tax. Where one state goes easy on one, they might go heavier on another.*** *** - unless you live in CA, NY, or IL where they go heavy on everything I guess. 2 TX NRG and hybridbear reacted to this

Our plates are about $102 a year, but our property taxes on homes and land, YuCk! The waste of it is 2/3rds goes to the school system, and having 2 kids in school I got first hand knowledge of what doesn't get funded by my taxes. Teachers, at least the good ones. Damned unions. 1 TX NRG reacted to this
Riggo Report post Posted August 22, 2013 (edited) Yep. Just got my personal property tax bill and it's $583 in northern Virginia. I don't think it'll be every 6 months though. I think it's yearly and this amount was prorated because I bought it in April. I figured next year would be a lot worse.
