Daytime Running Lights and Automatic Headlights

I'm planning to call/stop by the dealership to have them enable the DRLs as well, so we'll see how it goes.

 

One of the things you need to be careful of with DRLs without the auto-headlight feature: DRLs run the headlights at half power and don't run the taillights at all. So you still need to manually turn on the headlights at dusk or when it rains.

 

(If you leave the headlights on full power all the time, I think the battery-saver feature turns them off 10 minutes after ignition is turned off and the key removed. But I am not sure about this, so you might want to test it.)

Does anyone have the detailed steps that the dealer tech needs to take in order to enable the DRL's on a 2010 Milan Premier 4 cyl. with auto headlamps by any chance? My service advisor insists "It can't be done". He even showed me where it said that in his manual/bulletin. I'd like to bring the detailed steps to that dealer or else go to another one.

Hmm, that's odd. Just checking in the shop manual, in the section on headlights it does say the DRL is not programmable. However in the section "Module Configuration" it does list DRL as a programmable parameter. Have them look at the "Module Configuration" section and follow that procedure.

I had to explain to my dealer how to do it, because they didn't know how: Hook up diagnostic computer, go to external lighting menu, select DRLs.

I think Akirby was asking why you didn't select the autoheadlight option when selecting your Fusion. You can buy a Fusion with or without autoheadlights. Seems strange that someone who thinks it is important would select a Fusion without.

 

By the way, I had the dealer turn on the DRLs on my wife's Fusion. It took them about 10 minutes, but I had to explain to them how to do it, because they didn't know (Hook up diagnostic computer, go to external lighting menu, select DRLs).

I thought DRL's ran the high beams at 40%-60% wattage not the lows beams. My last 3 cars all ran the DRL from the High beams.

 

Do our cars run low beams for DRLs?

Hi Sylvain. :D As FFHdriver stated, on the Fusion/Milan the low beams are used for the DRL's.

 

However, DRL usage (high beam, low beam etc.) can vary from automaker to automaker and even from model to model within the same automaker.
