"Never exceed ... 10000 miles ... between oil change intervals"

"Never exceed ... 10000 miles ... between oil change intervals" is a quote from the owners manual for my 2015 FFH. Taken literally, it means you can't go over that 10,000 mile oil-change limit by even a few miles, much less the "500 miles plus or minus" I used in all my previous cars with their oil change intervals. Does anything over 10,000 void the warranty?

 

I ask because I'll have about 9400 miles on the oil before I take an 1100 mile trip next Wednesday (500+ miles each way plus some driving while there). I'll be in danger of going over the 10,000 mile mark on the trip there. So I guess I should get the car serviced before I leave, right?

 

Seems a bit of a waste to not be able to go to 10,000 then get the service reasonably soon after that. More than a waste, it removes the "even 10,000 mile numbers" as the triggers for an oil change, since each change (to satisfy the manual's requirement) would be at somewhat less than 10,000 miles and each change would be "lower down" from the next 10,000 mile mark.

Oil changes are dirt cheap. Why worry about trying to get that last 6% of the 10,000 oil change interval? That 6% probably equates to around $2.00 to $3.00 dollars. Just saying...

It's not the money, it's my sometimes-OCD kicking in wanting to use even 10,000 mile markers on the odometer for oil changes.

Okay, I understand. Glad it was not the $ ;)

 

At my Quick Lane they stick a little clear sticker in the upper left corner of the windshield that tells me what the odometer reading will be for the next 5000 mile interval. I use 5W-20 (a suitable substitute according to the owner's manual) instead of 0W-20 (full synthetic) and change at 5000-6000 mile intervals which also matches up nicely for the proper tire rotation interval.

When the remaining life is about 10% I make an appointment to get the work done. with the mileage I do (24K+ in 9 months) it's about 3-6% when I roll into the shop. Given your info, I'd change it before the trip and settle the "sometimes-OCD" part of you.

Oil doesn't just "expire" or go bad at a specific time, it just gets more contaminants and maybe some of the additives lose some effectiveness. Oil does not "wear out" in normal temperature use. I wouldn't worry about going 1000 miles over the 10,000 particularly highway miles.

Oil doesn't just "expire" or go bad at a specific time, it just gets more contaminants and maybe some of the additives lose some effectiveness. Oil does not "wear out" in normal temperature use. I wouldn't worry about going 1000 miles over the 10,000 particularly highway miles.

It's not the engine I'm concerned about if I go somewhat over 10,000 miles before an oil change, it's the warranty.

That's the be-all and end-all of the discussion.

 

Remember, at 10,000 miles, your ICE has not gone 10,000 miles, closer to 6,000 because you ran on battery for a lot of those miles and the ICE was not working the oil.

 

As to warranty, when was the last time you even heard about an oil related failure?

I take mine to the dealer every 10,500 or so and they've never mentioned anything about it causing a warranty issue. You should be fine.

The "change oil soon" (or whatever it says) showed up the first time at 9,500 miles and (of course) I had far less miles than than that using the ICE.

Environmentalist say you are polluting the environment by changing your oil more than necessary, but then why waist the money when it's not needed. The only way to know when to change your oil is to test it to see if it's needed.

Finally had my oil changed, AZ trip extended my duration, so I ended up with 25,400 mi. ODO and 11,400 mi. ICE.using Mobil 1, 0-20W full synthetic Oil. Still hadn't used a noticeable amount of oil. Sending my oil sample off to Blackstone Labs. smile.png

Got report back from Blackstone Labs on my oil sample. I guess we could compare it to others. smile.png

At 11K ICE mi. BlackStone said my oil was fine so maybe I could have gone to 15K ICE miles. Mobil 1 says it can last up to 15k miles. smile.png

That little sticker is always the first thing I remove after an oil change at the Ford dealer.

I recently had a puncture fixed on my wife's Explorer at an independent shop and had them do an oil change. I was presently surprised that they did not put the typical 5000 mile sticker in the upper left windshield corner.
