Auto headlights too sensitive?

Recommended Posts

I notice when driving with auto headlights during the afternoon that driving under an overpass (local streets <45mph) the lights switch on then 2 seconds later after coming back into daylight they switch off. I wouldn't mind it so much except I don't want oncoming traffic thinking I am flashing them or something. I haven't looked in the manual yet but is there a way to adjust this sensitivity other than turning off auto headlights altogether?

If I designed this system I would make the light sensitivity that turns them on a lot lower. Afternoon shade? really??

I've had them turn on going thru a bank teller drive-thru. On the AUTO setting they are typically DRL (daytime running lights) so some illumination is there to warn oncoming vehicles. The overpass must be dark enough and long enough to trigger going to full headlights. I personally would simply go with it ... if the overpass is that dark full illumination must be needed somehow.

I find my 2014 is not sensitive enough. They don't turn on as quickly as I would like when going into tunnels and they turn off too soon after sunrise - this compared to many other Ford vehicles I've driven.

As Cobra348 notes, if you've got your DRL setting turned on, then oncoming traffic won't really notice the difference.

I agree. I don't trust the auto headlights unless it's completely dark outside. We always turn the headlights on manually in dim light situations. I also manually turn my lights on when approaching a tunnel rather than relying on the auto lights. There's a tunnel I drive fairly often near downtown Mpls and most cars with auto headlights from all companies turn on the headlights about 100 feet before exiting the tunnel. What a waste!
