Cannot enter data into Navigation while moving

Recommended Posts

Hi Kim! Thanks for the info! It's actually a pretty easy and fast way to send directions to the car when using a computer.

The "send to car" app, actually utilizes MapQuest's servers to push the information from an Android phone to SYNC services.

I do have three question though:

1. This "SEND TO SYNC" is part of SYNC services? That does mean, after 3 years, we have to pay for this directions from MapQuest to our car...correct?

2. Speaking of Navigation, do you know the approximate cost of upgrading the maps for the 13-14 Fusions?

3. The upgrade process of the mapping software, is as simple as swapping out the old SD card for the new one...correct?

Thanks!

Correct; the SEND TO SYNC feature is part of SYNC Services. The subscription is currently $60/year. Some vehicles come with a complimentary subscription for 3 years if you're the original owner. Once this complimentary subscription expires, it can be purchased at: www.Support.Ford.com after logging in. MapQuest will only send directions to your vehicle if the phone number that is entered on their website/app has an active SYNC Services subscription.

All navigation map updates are done through our software partner called HERE. Their website is: www.Navigation.com Select the type of vehicle you own and the website will show if an update is available. It will also display pricing information. If you'd rather speak to one of their agents, they can be contacted at 1-888-628-6277. Since you have a MyFord Touch system, swapping SD cards is all you will need to do in order to upgrade maps.

Kim, how do you add waypoints "on the fly". When on a long trip, I like to put city centers as waypoints then cancel them as we get close to force it to the next way point. With your destination at 600 miles or so when you start, you get to see your total trip ETA etc. You can do it manually, how do you do it by voice.

I am trying to get this. It is getting better, but there are still many "unsolveable" flaws yet.

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi rjent,

jsolan did a great job explaining how to set up waypoints while driving. Just press the VOICE COMMAND button and say NAVIGATION, then DESTINATION. Follow the instructions that the SYNC lady (Samantha) gives you. The option to set a city center as a waypoint will not be available through voice commands while driving. I suggest searching for a POI within a city if you don't have a specific address handy. Here is a great list of acceptable navigation commands to get you started: http://support.ford.com/sync-technology/navigation-by-voice-sync-myford-touch

Neat to know that "her" name is Samantha...just like the recent news story of finding out who the voice-over artist is who is the voice of Siri...

Question would be if Samantha also responses to her name like Siri does? ;)

You made me curious, so I searched for the story. Very interesting! Thanks for sharing.

You can address her by name, but she'll probably try to take the attention off of herself and suggest a different topic. She's so darn shy. ;)

Did you know that most phone system voice mail recordings are done by one person, who is highly sought after and in her 70's? Next time you listen to a canned recording, see if you recognize the voice. She has been used by Cisco, ATT, Nortel and quite a few others, including corporate special recordings.

At least Sam doesnt sound like a Cylon like my Tom Tom does.

I was having issues with the voice command and I realized that I was holding the button down while I was talking, like you would do with a CB radio. Once I broke myself of that habit I've had much better results with voice.

...knowing her name kinda takes some fun out of it for me. One of my earlier trips in the vehicle was to a renaissance faire. I spent a lot of the trip playing around with various voice commands. Sync would recognize my voice just fine, but not my girlfriends. My girlfriend got annoyed and started referring to the voice as "Sync Wench". I liked the term and have been using it ever since, but now that I know her name, it seems a bit mean haha

I have a 78 Ford LTD that came from the factory with a CB radio. Still works.

Sometimes doing it by voice is very frustrating. Last summer I tried to get an address entered via voice while I was on the road - Sendero del Charro was the name of the street, which the system could not understand. Still had trouble when I spelled it out. I remember being extremely frustrated, not even sure now if I was finally able to get the destination address entered or not. During the last two or so months, however, it's been much easier to verbally enter the destination address.

Thanks for posting this. I never knew you could do this. Works with my iPhone 5.

I hope this is a good place to ask this. I found a post somewhere that a destination can be entered into Navigation from the phone book. I had been looking for that for 11 months. So I dashed out to my care to try it. You go to Phone, Phone book, Options, set as Destination. When I do so it says the address is incorrect, please update your phone book. I cannot figure out what is wrong with the addresses - I have tried several. This would be useful. Interestingly, if I use the Android app, Sync Destinations, the same address will transfer to Navigation.

SO, you learned to Speak Sync? :) I still feel weird talking to my car.

Oh Computer.

Living-Star-Trek-Scotty-Hello-Computer-t

That's one of my favorite scenes from 'Star Trek IV - The Voyage Home'! And yes, I do feel a bit strange talking to the car, but if serves a purpose, helping me to keep my eyes on the road instead of fumbling with my phone.

I didn't think I could find the exact scene, but it was on the first row of images. Some times I get the keywords just right, and this was one of them. I cant help it, any time I hear of using Sync I see that scene.

I'm glad you're seeing an improvement, GrayStrider. Let me know if I can help with anything.

Just like the name of the OS in the movie "Her". Kinda cool, but creepy!
