From TDI Sportwagon (VW) to new 2014 Fusion Hybrid

I bought a new VW Jetta Sportwagon TDI back in 2009. It was a fun car and I got 42-44 MPG on it most of the time, but that was on Diesel which is now running about 75 cents a gal more than UL Gas. The other problem with this VW was at 40,000 miles, the required service was north of $800 as the DSG transmission required a very expensive oil and filter change. These two items alone kind of cut into any savings you get with the VW TDI milage.

 

Then

 

On my way home from work one night, the transmission just went into nuetral. Coasted to side of road. Turned off engine and restarted and everything seemed ok. As it was getting close to oil change time (also expensivet , as this thing needed special TDI oil that cost $12-14 a quart).

 

Went into false neutral 3 times on way to dealer. Of coarse the dealer could not duplicate the problem, but I videoed it with my iphone.

 

Anyway, 3 weeks later, after VW finally got a new transmission shipped in from Germany, I got my VW back. I traded on my new Fusion Hybrid the following weekend. So far, we love the little Ford. It is so much quiter than the VW was and so far (250 miles) we have averaged 44 MPG.

Welcome to the FFHF! I had considered getting the VW Passat, but decided on the FFH. It's a great car and I'm glad I made the right choice.

Welcome! The sound of silence in the FFH has spoiled me so much I don't like driving any other car. This is my first hybrid, and I don't think I'll purchase a 100% ICE powered vehicle again (unless it's an aircraft). What options do you have on your FFH?

My Fusion is a 2014 SE with most of the bells and whistles, ie NAV, backup camera etc.

My story is somewhat similar, altough I did not have any issues with my 2009 Jetta TDI. Drove it four years and just shy of 50K. Averaged around 40-41 for the vehicle. Paid around 22k for the Jetta and got 13.5K trade in after 4 years, not bad.

 

I was getting worried with all the High Pressure Fuel Pump failures. It appears to be a 8K expense, while VW was covering the issue for now, I just did not want that headache.

 

I like the FFH and enjoy driving in EV so much that an electic vehicle is actually appealing to me. maybe one day. The FFH is so far a great car even though I only average around 40mpg.

If i was going to get one id get the 6speed manual in the passat tdi. I dont even have to bother to do anything as my first 2 cars were manuals. Its just 2nd nature.

I looked at the VW Jetta Hybrid as well, but their regenerative system - I didn't feel safe with it. Once you dropped below 5 mph, their regenerative braking system would like "let go" (no longer slowing you down at the same rate compared to when it's on) and the car salesman was with me when I went on the test drive and he was like "so...what do you think?" and I told him about that and he gave like some BS answer and in the back of my mind (this was before I joined Ford), I was thinking "I'm an engineer. You can't BS me like this." So...and I told him that it's a safety issue too because if you're < 5 mph, you're right about to stop at the intersection, but because they decided to develop the system in such a way that it stops giving you braking power, you end up shooting forward, quite possibly into the intersection right at the last minute, which means that you have to now suddenly slam on the brakes (at < 5 mph) to prevent yourself from entering into the intersection. Yeah...I did NOT like that at all. It's a safety thing. (This was when I was working at a Tier 1 supplier on crash safety simulations and engineering).

 

With my 2013 Ford Fusion Titanium Hybrid, I don't have that problem/issue. So glad about that.

 

And both my dad and one of my friends said that it's absolutely FREAKY how quiet it is when you start up and drive off. And there'd be times where I'd turn off the radio/music just to enjoy how quiet the car is.

the 2009 Camry Hybrid we had did this too, sometimes would cut out above 15 MPH. I did not like that car very much.
