Car classifications

At the end of the MKZ commercial, they specify the car being in the Luxury Compact segment. Um, ok? I would never consider a midsized sedan like this to be a compact. To me a compact is a Focus, and a sub compact a Fiesta, and a Smart to be a golf cart, or kick me car.

 

Where and when did that all come about?

For the luxury segment it is compact. I dont think we have anything smaller in any of the luxury brands do we? 4doors required.

Doesnt lexus have a small 4 door hatchback now? Now that is a compact to me. Then again, I have only driven real cars, that have 4 doors, and can haul 4 bodies in the trunk for 30 years. Anything else is a compact. :)

Thats the lexus pri.. Its just a prius with a few other options.

I disagree that the MKZ is a compact luxury car.

The MKZ overall length is 194.1 inches;

Wheelbase is 112.2 inches.

 

The 2013 Mercedes Benz C-Class sedan overall length is 180.8 inches;

Wheelbase is 108.7 inches.

 

The C-Class is a compact - 13 inches shorter than the MKZ and 3.5 inches shorter wheelbase than the MKZ.

 

FYI, the Fusion Hybrid overall length is 191.8 and the wheelbase is 112.2 as well, so our Fusions are larger than the MB as well.

You are correct; I just picked the C-Class because it was the first luxury compact car that popped into my head. Afterwards, I also thought of the Audi A4, Infiniti G37 (which has been replaced by the Q50, but I'm not sure of the specs on that vehicle), or the Lexus IS. All are more compact than either of the truly mid-size offerings by Ford/Lincoln.

Length of car is not where they classify , it's based on interior volume, including trunk space. Thats how a Prius is ranked as a mid size.

Not that I can use the Prius's interior volume in the trunk area for extra leg room. For a "mid size" the Prius is seriously short on leg room.

100% agree! I found the car small and uncomfortable to drive long periods, yet the rear seat had more leg room.

What prius are we talking about? Isnt there like 30 different models between sizes and plug in and all other stuff? lol

The standard pius is the one I referred to. The C is smaller, the V is larger, but not by very much. They all look pretty the much the same though, bland, outdated, I have a mouse on my desk that is 15 years old that looks just like them.

FYI, Lincoln has put out a new TV ad for the 2014 MKZ Hybrid, and it does not mention "compact" - it compares itself to the Lexus ES300h Hybrid.

I gotta say, this is a much better commercial than Ford did with the "either/or". But why are they still using "best fuel economy" in their ads? MKZ 45mpg city, Lexus 40mpg city, MKZ 45/45/45mpg.

I saw that commercial too, along with the "Consierge" commercial.

 

Lincoln is doing a good job playing to its strengths. Now they just need more lineup.
