wawawa or woobwooobwoob sound

Recommended Posts

I am hearing this sound while driving, and thought maybe it was the tires since my other car made a similar sound that was the tires, as it changed when I had them rotated. So I had the tires rotated on this one, and the noise is still there up front. Just wondering if its normal drivetrain noise with the Ecvt. Does yours make a noise like this in EV mode regardless of speed? I think the title best describes the sound, its not HIGH pitched, but higher than I can imitate.

I have an appointment scheduled for after the holiday to have the bumper repainted, and was thinking of having them check it out, but if others hear it too, I wont bother.

woobwooobwoob sound - I'd check on the roof of your car...sounds like helicopter rotors. Make sure you get permission before taking off and no wires are in your path. :reading:

I still marvel at how smooth and quiet my car is. That is one of my favorite things about this car. And Houston roads are pretty much awful, which is bound to eventually take a toll. But for now, no, I do not hear any weird sounds.

Somehow I just KNEW y'all would make fun of it! :drop:

:)

It is pretty constant no matter what speed I go, but mostly I notice it above 30. Since it didnt transfer to the rear like I had hoped for(Or they didn't actually rotate the tires like they charged me for), this leads me to believe it is a bearing noise. Just not the kind of bearing noise I would want to hear if one is failing since this type of bearing noise is internal with the CVT.

What I might do is jack the front wheels up and see if the noise is there with no load on the suspension. If I still hear it, then it would confirm its transmission related. :(

If the woob woob woob is followed by a nyuk nyuk nyuk then the sound is from watching too much 3 Stooges www.youtube.com/watch?v=g5j8Jioan1w

acdii - You may hear some pretty harsh sounds if you jack up both front wheels and get the ICE running in Drive. That was the way I narrowed my accelerate / decelerate sounds to the HF35 Transaxle box. I did this in cooler weather and was able to get the ICE to stay at idle by putting the shifter in Low range with the engine cool. I get a rattle every time the engine pulls the front wheels. The wheels spin up then gradually slow down to the point where the gearbox speeds them up again. I took a very large screwdriver and (put the blade on the engine and my ear on the handle) in various places to locate the sound. Nothing until i put the blade on the CVT box. Then I really hear the racket. Sounds like slop in gears somewhere. Short time sitting on the jacks but lasts about 3 to 5 seconds on light acceleration or deceleration at less than 20 mph but ONLY when the ICE is running. Since it doesn't make a sound in EV mode, I am pretty sure it has nothing to do with the hub spacers (no ping pong sounds) nor with anything in the differential gears. I am thinking my sound may be related to the clutch plate that is there to absorb shock when the ICE starts or stops. Couple dealer service departments say it is within normal limits. I am learning to ignore it until the 2014s appear. Yours does sound like tires.

It is in the shop now getting looked at for this and a few other things.

It sounds like a differential on an old truck.

I'd go a speed that you can reliably hear it and then lower each window one at a time to see if the sound is localized to a quadrant or constant.

Apparently this is a normal sound. I guess I never noticed it in that "other" car. Its the differential gearset making the noise, it resonates right around 45 MPH. It is only present when in EV and have everything off inside. The ICE drowns it out, and since the ICE was nearly always on in that "other" car, is probably why I never noticed it.

I'll have to listen for that, my car is very quiet most of the time, other than driving on certain road surfaces.

Dealers have nice all-inclusive phrases when they don't know what to do, 'can't reproduce condition' and 'within normal limits'.

All kidding aside, that does not sound 'normal' to me.

This is off the OASIS review from Ford. Maybe this could be the source of your odd noises.

4073 - 2013 C-MAX / 2013-2014 Fusion and MKZ Hybrid/Energi - Powertrain Clunk/Whine - Bonus Bolt In Engine Mount
Some 2013 C-MAX and 2013-2014 Fusion and MKZ Hybrid/Energi vehicles may exhibit a tactile vibration or clunking/thumping noise when braking or when tipping in or out of the throttle, or a powertrain/transaxle whine primarily when braking. This may be caused by a foreign object such as a nut or bolt lodged in one of the powertrain mounts causing a ground out condition to the body – either the RH transmission mount or the LH engine mount. To access the LH engine mount, remove the 7B012 Secondary On Board Diagnostic Module (SOBDMC) in order to inspect the LH engine mount for this possible grounding condition.

Close, but the noise I hear is under load, maintaining ~45 MPH on EV. Thats when its most pronounced. Like I said, its very close to what you would hear in a rear differential when the lash is off on the pinion.

Does the noise get worse when you do regen braking?

no, the two are not the same noise. The Hybrid sounds are unique and easy to discern over the rest of the noises the car makes. This is a mechanical noise associated with the drive train. It is very similar to tire noise, but is coming from the CVT, and only noticeable around 45 MPH in EV. As soon as I release the load it quiets down, much the same way a rear differential with a poor lash does.
