Wake up ford.. Noise canceling should include ICE at low speeds..

Anybody else noticed that when the ICE comes on at lower speeds its loud and noisy but at 40+ mph you can barely hear it as the noise canceling is louder?

 

Than again I dont know if the fusions system works quite as good as my MKZ as I have read its quieter all around inside. I know they know the frequency of the sounds the ICE makes so im sure they could do something.

I have both and the MKZh is quieter than the FFH, but that is because there is more insulation in the Z.

I wonder if Iaftermarket insulation installed in the ffh will mess up the noise cancellation or not.

The kind of insulation I would want would be engine compartment and that would be prettyhard to do.

Just added weight. It wont mess the NC since it relies on microphones to pick up on the sounds it needs to cancel. It also doesn't work as well when the windows are open, it picks up sounds it isnt supposed to and counteracts them. Damn near made me PMP one day when it heard a boom and responded with it's own boom, right against my left leg.

The noise cancellation was added specifically because the engine created a low rumble sound at low speed. It's not the reason that you don't hear it at high speeds.

Has anyone tried driving with the fuse pulled to see what the car sounds like with no Active Noise Cancellation?

I have a question regarding this, probably a dumb one. Does the ANC work with the radio both on and off? Personally I find our 2014 Hybrid noisier/grumblier than our 2010 was. That's our only source of disappointment with the new car.

New here, having taken delivery on Mar 20 & just recently finding the forum. My perception is that this 2.0L is significantly "throatier"/more rumbly when moving from standstill on the engine than was my '12 FFH's 2.5L. Since the overall powertrain dynamics of the vehicle have improved as a result of the model update in '13 (as evidenced by both city & hwy fuel economy), I'd just like to confirm whether the seemingly noisier "push-off" from stopped is simply a consequence (not "just me")--as well as a point at which Noise Cancellation probably should be tweaked... hmmm. Wonder if NC technology currently can't quite deal w/ that frequency of rumble. Anyone else have observations on the topic--inc. at least anecdotal comparisons between the '10-'12 FFH & the '13-'14 on sound while accelerating from stationary? Thanks.

Other than the NC system, you may want to read this regarding making the Atkinson 'growl' a bit quieter.

I returned here to note that my '14 was built in early March of this year, so when I pop the hood tomorrow, if the tube W/ resonator isn't present, I'll eat my shoes--& report back, regardless. Presumably my original "?" will stand, as modified: Do others here notice a significantly greater ICE noise in FFH's which have the newer air intake tube (i.e., w/ resonator) as compared with a '12 FFH (or equivalent in this regard)?

No not true. It is still there; some say a little less loud than the '13s but I have no frame of reference.

It depends on what you find "objectionable".

It is quite noticeable.

yes, the ANC works with the radio off. The amplifier is never really “off” in the traditional sense it just stops getting input from the entertainment system. It’s always on as I believe that all the system beeps and warbles and dings come through the system too.

 

As far as that resonator, I’ve just looked under the hood of my ’13 FFH and it’s already got one. I was hoping to have a way to reduce that noise a little further but oh well. It’s really not objectionable it’s just such a contrast to the utter silence of the car in electric mode that it makes the switchover much more obvious. The switchover from electric to gas is handled so well in this car that you can barely feel it in any other way, but the sound ruins the effect ;) Sometimes the car goes into hybrid mode for a while and at those RPM’s you really can’t hear anything different, but then it switches to full ICE and lots of battery charging and revs up a lot. It’s not bad, it’s still less loud than my old car, but the contrast makes it seem worse.

Indeed (more like of course) the resonator is on my '14, which was built this March. I don't want to be misunderstood, particularly by mwr, who indicates that he or she is considering buying his/her first FFH. On this subject, I concur w/ what James Sentman said, above. I wouldn't attach the adjective "objectionable", either, especially all things considered. Again, with my 2012 FFH (which had the 2.5L engine), I did not perceive the 2014's, well, low growl when accelerating from standstill on the ICE--or during the electric-to-gas switchover. That was my primary point, & I wondered whether my '14 was atypical regarding the growl--which is actually a li'l sexy, in its own way. ;) Seems that I have the answer, thanks.

2015 FFH Titanium here. I only have about 300 km on it at this point. I love the car, but also am distracted by the ”growl” or ”rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr” noise from take off. It does seem to become less noticeable after about 50 k/hr, and hasn't been noticeable at all on the highways (100 k/hr). The interesting thing is that it is totally absent at other times at low speed when the system does show the ICE operating. Maybe this is not so much a function of speed but engine rpm/charging mode? I will have to watch the tach for a while to see if that is the case.

I will have to continue my break-in period and see if I can associate the noise more closely with my driving style and the operational stage of the ICE, to know whether its all normal or suggests a visit to the service Dept. Don't want to damage the beauty due to lack of attention or knowledge about hybrid ops.

 

Any insights are welcome.

This noise is common on most Atkinson cycle hybrids. It probably comes from the intake manifold due to charge being blown back into it due to the late closing of the intake valves on the compression stroke and the throttle plate being almost wide open during all ICE operation. It's inherent. It's probably tough to muffle without restricting intake air flow. If you keep your acceleration in the low range it's minimal and the rest of the time it's very quiet. If you have to use high power to enter freeways, etc., just grin and bear it. Pretend it's a 600 hp. V-10. It's unlikely there's anything wrong with the car. There has been a case or two of the active noise cancellation having a problem.

There's not much of a breakin for the car, mostly it's the driver. After 1000 miles, if you can go to a safe place to do so, do a 60 - 100 mph full throttle acceleration. You'll be surprised.
