milleron Report post Posted June 3, 2013 I'm getting a little better gas mileage over the same route/distance with the MKZ. Yes, I'm aware the MKZ is heavier.Remarkable. How much better? Is it reproducible?
jsolan Report post Posted June 3, 2013 The engine noise is really my only complaint of the car after 2 weeks. It is LOUD at low speeds during acceleration. I thought maybe I was just spoiled by EV mode and making me think it was louder than what it really is, but accelerating between 25-40 mph, it's almost loud enough to drown out the radio. I thought maybe it was CVT's in general because the Altima I had test driven has the same problem, but I took my relative's prius for a drive this weekend and it's engine is much quieter, though I'm glad I went with the Fusion in general.I really don't remember it being this loud during test drives and sometimes the ICE is super quiet, but other times, it has a horribly loud growl. milleron Report post Posted June 3, 2013 I'm NO mechanic, but I've always assumed that this is valve noise. Could it be transmission noise? Why doesn't the touted Active Noise Cancellation do a better job of silencing it? After hearing it, it's very obvious why Ford installed ANC, but why doesn't it work better? I often wonder if it's functioning at all, and I don't think that there's any way to tell.
fusionTX Report post Posted June 3, 2013 I think the ANC works very well. I have no complaints with the windows up, other than being slightly embarrassed by the noise. My car is very quiet, engine going or not.
hermans Report post Posted June 3, 2013 (edited) Remarkable. How much better? Is it reproducible? It's been averaging 1.6 MPG better than the FFH over a daily 4 mile trip - same route same speed same temperatures same driving conditions. I got 44.8 on a1200 mile trip recently with the MKZ. This is 2/10 of a mile less than the 45 MPG Lincoln advertises. I'm extremely happy with both cars. The good news is I am now the primary driver of the '13 FFH while my wife has commandeered the '13 MKZ hybrid. The 2010 Fusion has gone to a much appreciated home - still in the family. You'd describe the car as "very" quiet -- i.e., you don't hear, or can barely hear, the ICE when accelerating? Perhaps my ANC really isn't working. It's my humble opinion that there's no logical reason for that, and it lends credence to the suspicion many of us share that there can be apparently-inexplicable but significant differences between these cars as they roll off the production line.. The MKZ has an identical drivetrain and computerized control. Are there significant differences in the tires? Does the MKZ come with tires that have much lower rolling resistance? 1 hybridbear reacted to this
majorleeslow Report post Posted September 1, 2013 And it does make a metallic whining noise, or a grumble as others have put it. That definitely is a strange sound compared to Otto cycle engines that's cauz the cams have different strokes for the combustion and exhaust cycle which extracts out more efficiency. This at high rpm sounds like whine. We are just used to the other sounds much more since we grew up with it.
