What's the most gallons you've been able to put in at one fill-up?[

I pushed it a bit further today, went DTE -20, put in 12.2.

 

this was after you get the red gas tank light

I put in 11.911 gallons @ DTE 18 miles. This is the most I've been able to put in. With the fill-up not being consistent, my MPG numbers way off. FFH says that I did 45.7 MPG last tank but because I put in more fuel today than ever, my fuelly number is at 39.6 MPG. I am sure this will even off with more fill-ups but seeing sub-40 MPG is disappointing!

Yes, it goes red at 0 DTE and at that point I estimate there's 1½-2 gallons remaining... I went another 20 past zero and filled up, and apparently there was still 1.3 gallons in there... so I'd say 1½-2 is the approximate reserve amount, which is about the same as my 2010 which had a 17.5 gallon tank and the most I ever got into that was 16.18 gallons...

I started a topic about the accuracy of the Lifetime Summary in comparison to Fuelly partly because of your comment ace. I would be more inclined to trust the car's computer for individual tank MPGs since we've discovered that the pump click off points can be so far off. However, comparing the Lifetime MPG to the Fuelly average will help see in the long run if the car's computer is accurate or not.

 

The car appears to display fuel consumption in hundredths of a gallon from what it says in the ET Mode, and if you look at the "Fuel Counts" screen you'll see it measures the fuel consumed even more precisely than that. We've found the car to be very accurate in the long run. On our 4500 mile road trip to Cali the car was off by .1 MPG from what my gas receipts and Fuelly showed. And my Lifetime Summary exactly matches my Fuelly number as of today

I was wondering if I should put the same amount of fuel at each fill-up, like 10 gallons so that I can get accurate number. From your observations, it appears tat FFH keeps very accurate records of fuel consumption.

Its more accurate to do the gallons actually used than to use the Lie-O-meter. Over time the miles driven vx gallons used will give you the most accurate MPG. However whats more important is gallons used than MPG.

I don't think that would calibrate anything if you aren't using a ScanGauge.

Filled up today, first time since 3/9, went about 10 miles past 0 on DTE. The fuel warning light never turned red, it stayed yellow the whole time. ET Mode showed my FLPM (fuel level % of max) as under 5% and I only put in 11.851 gallons...the pump clicked off first around 10 gallons but I kept force feeding it until I could take it no more. My display level showed all the way but the FLPM was not at 100 even when I first left the gas station

 

5% remaining would mean .675 gallons remaining and that I should have been able to add more than 12 gallons. Although I did have a pump that I could not even put on the slowest click because it kept shutting off so I had to hold it on really slow the whole time.

On a recent round trip from Houston to Florida, I cut it close twice.

 

On my way to Florida I went 20 miles beyond the 0 miles point. I pumped 12.75 gallons.

On the way back from Florida, I pumped 13 gallons on my second fill-up, going a little less than twenty miles past the zero point.

I should really keep a gallon spare in my trunk, and then try to see just exactly how far I can go.

 

But so far, the most I've put is 11.847 gallons (special overfill (the pump clicked like 6-20 times - I stopped counting after a while)). That was when we were prepping my vehicle for its initial weigh in.

Most people here will tell you that it's a really really bad idea to run out of gas - just ask acdii. The fuel pump is in the fuel tank and it needs the gas to stay cool :)

It's also probably bad for the pump seals to be running dry with no lubrication.

Try burned out trunk wiring at the cost of $2500. Been there, done that, REALLY dont want to repeat it! :)

I ran it out once, that apparently was all it took, a few weeks later I pulled into my driveway and saw smoke coming up through the speakers. I shut off the car and the smoke stopped, so when i opened the trunk and looked the entire harness was melted. The Fuse for some reason didnt blow.

What car was this? I've known many people who have run out of gas over the course of my life with no adverse effects.

Are the issues you mention specific to Fords gas tank?

10.87 gallons..... sounds like I can push it a lil further if need be as I've never seen the red gas warning.

I should talk to our performance/fuel economy guys to see if there's a way that I can rig my car so that I would be able to actually do that test. I've only had 4 fill ups so far, but it seems like that the first click is like remarkably early. Maybe that's a function of the whole capless fill? *shrug*

4 fill ups, last one was at 2 miles to empty. Put in about 11.8 gallons with 2-3 clicks I think. Had to pay 20 cents more per gallon since I was afraid to drive all the way home where the gas was cheaper (~10 miles further). Next time I'll know that I can probably make it.

Once, many years ago, I was with a girl I really liked, in a 1988 Cutlass Ciera. Pushing my luck. It ran out of gas right at the gas station driveway. Had to push it where it needed to go. But it didn't smoke or overheat or anything. The car just shut off silently.

 

This deal of the fuel pump blowing or burning out must be specific to newer cars. That was the only time I ran completely out of gas but it was reasonably tame and harmless, so maybe the newer tech is more sensitive? Maybe that's also why gas mileage seems to be worse. I distinctly remember the Cutlass getting decent mileage.

I've ran out ran out before in my old Cavalier (twice) without issue (other than actually running out of gas).

1992 Ford Crown Victoria. It had the HPP package, High Performance and handling, so the pump was a high volume work horse, and guess it doesn't like to run out of fuel at all.
