Spare Tire for fusion hybrid

Just wanted to add that the wheel, tire, jack, wrench and foam block from the 2012+ Focus are exactly the same as the one used in the non-hybrid Fusion. I recently ordered the whole setup for about $110 on ebay.

 

I also confirmed through a very knowledgeable source that running the smaller mini-spare on the front of the FFH will not cause any damage to the powertrain.

Any chance you could post a photo of this all sitting in the spare wheel well?

Looks just like every other Fusion, except for the big battery at the front of the trunk.

If you go to your local Ford dealer and look in the trunk of a non-hybrid Fusion you can examine just how it fits. The spare tire wheel well is the same as in the hybrid. You take a spare tire and tool kit out of a non-hybrid and it fits perfectly in a hybrid.

Talking about the spare here, not the regular tire...

 

I assume the one being referred to here that fits and/or is the same as in the regular Fusion or Focus is a 16" spare?

 

The one recommended here for making a custom spare to match size as close as possible is

Continental T-135/90-16 CST17 fits just fine (it's tight, but it fits), so anything smaller to match

a regular Fusion or Focus will surely fit as well in the same tire well.

 

Have people seen pieces on the local news in the past few weeks about how many car owners found out

the hard way that their cars did not have spares? Not just the Ford Fusion.... With the terrible

winter and major potholes all over, lots of people found out this out the hard way.

 

And lots of stolen rims too to replace busted/dented ones to go with flat tires. Hence, wheel locks - that I thought were

a stupid/ugly idea, not a bad idea.

I was specifically referring to the 2012-2013+ Ford Focus spare tire kit to see your photo. I've seen two kits advertised - one with a styrofoam holder (Focus) and the other that comes in a separate bag (from 2013 Fusion). Are they the same?

The 2013 Fusion comes with the styrofoam holder and not a bag. The unit I bought for my 2013 FFH came from a 2013 Fusion SE with a 1.6 motor.

There's a guy claiming that he has a Ford Fusion spare and wheel (2013), but the tire size is T145/70R17. That's different than the two tire sizes I've seen on this thread. Anyone ever hear of this?

The standard Fusion spare wheel is a 16".

Make sure the bolt pattern on the wheel is 5x108mm so it fits the 2013-14 Fusion.

Use the Tire Calculator to compare tire sizes, don't get a tire that is too wide so it is higher than the sides of the spare tire wheel well.

Understand GrySql. This person claims it's an actual Fusion 2013 spare at 17 inches, so I'm suspect.

 

Section width is 5.71 vs. 4.92 on the T125/80R16 Spares.

OK, so I picked up the 2013 Focus spare tire, wheel and jack kit and all is well in Fusion #1. Picked up a 2013 Fusion spare tire, wheel and jack set for Fusion #2. EBay bears watching for those looking. Decent deals.

 

Update: For those who have converted to a real spare tire, the Mobility Kit stows really well behind a Ziplock Freezer Quart Bag box (Left side) so you have convenient use of the air pump (See pic).

Great info! Anyone know if the 2015 Fusion hybrid will accept the sizes mentioned here?

 

Got my car today. I'm beyond annoyed-- when we were shopping, I explicitly asked the sales rep if the hybrid had a spare and he said yes. Wonder what other misinformation he gave me... (I especially like that he used a yellow highlighter to show the benefits of Roadside Assistance, first being "Flat Tires".

I have both a 2013 and 2014 Fusion HyTi. Both work fine with the Spares. Unless something major changed, I would expect the 2015s to be identical.

Yesterday I found a brand new spare and kit from a 14 Fusion at the salvage yard. $125.00 Some say they have found cheaper but $125 ain't bad. Picking it up today in Tampa.

BTW, What are people inflating the standard "replacement" spare to in PSI?

It says 60PSI max on the tire and I checked mine this weekend and up'd it to this

number.

 

Any reason to be otherwise than 60 psi ? Hope I never need it, but it's comfortable

in my trunk!

These things are pretty much standard across the industry, set it to 60psi and don't forget to check it regularly.

If you have a spare tire, why would you want to keep the mobility kit in the trunk?

Because the mobility kit is also an air compressor, and sometimes tires need air when they're not flat.

Not only that, but the mobility kit could come in handy under certain conditions. It could help you get off the expressway, where it may not be as safe to jack up and swap in a spare. Or maybe get you going more quickly or conveniently if you go flat on a dark, desolate road or in a downpour. I'd keep it, too.

Or, that rare occasion when you get two flats. It's happened to me... twice! Those were not happy days. Although, come to think of it, sealant would not have helped, since both occasions involved punctured sidewalls...

GrySql , did you read the Post in the Welcome thread were the guy had a semi flat after hitting something in the road and it cut his sidewall. Lucky for him it didn't cut through but only leaks air and Goodyear doesn't have his tire in stock because it's so new. Now he's driving around on a dangerous cut tire that could blow out any time. I hope Ford will see the error of their ways and start putting the correct size spare tires in these FFH's. It's the RIGHT thing to do, as peoples lives could be at stake.

This is one of 5 reasons I put forth to Ford - thru CS and thru Social - for having a spare of some kind in the FFH. Social never published my stuff yet there was no prior article regarding lack of spares in FFH (and FFE?) autos. I was seriously heading for a FFH but the lack of a spare of any kind and having to scrounge up parts from all over to have one just puts me off Ford as a Hybrid choice.

 

I refuse to do long-distance travel with only fix-a-flat and a compressor on-board. Anyone driving I-81, I-77 and I-26 goes thru quite a few construction zones where tires can be damaged. I see no good reason to not have a donut in the trunk. If the lack is due to EPA ratings that would fall, perhaps improvement on the motive power is warranted instead of jeopardizing drivers.

 

I hope Ford CS sees this thread and your note especially. Meanwhile, I shall climb off my soapbox and continue with the little Fiestas I have - at least they have donut spares.

There are many cars that come without spare tires including the $100,000. Tesla.

 

There is no known mini-spare for the Energi. The one that fits the FFH does not fit the FFE. The only option is a full size wheel. The only place to carry it would be in the back seat.
