GrySql Report post Posted March 25, 2013 Here is the update on the spare tire. I called the dealer today and they said the size is fine, I can drive on the donut without worry. That is excellent news for everyone interested in this topic. Do post in a separate Topic so it is easily found. Thanks for the effort, I like simple answers and mine were getting too complicated.

acdii Report post Posted March 25, 2013 When I was researching 17" replacements for the 18's the diameter was roughly the same overall. What works for one should work for both. Difference in diameter is .07" The 17 is 26.25: the 18 is 26.33"
GrySql Report post Posted March 25, 2013 (edited) GrySql - Let's hope Kaleido's report doesn't stop you from updating your investigation. We all fully appreciate your efforts. Besides, I believe he has different sized wheels. Thanks for the support.I am pressing on with the larger spare tire for the 18" wheel/tire combo. That way we'll have two points of data. Now, we just have to get someone with an 18" car to try a stock spare tire and it's a wrap. I still wonder why the '13 FFH OM has no input on this whole issue.A 2010 FFH comes with a spare and has lots of comments in the 2010 OM about driving with dissimilar sized tires and smaller spare tires. At least Kal has laid one part of the mystery to rest, hooray! Edited March 25, 2013 by GrySql
GrySql Report post Posted March 28, 2013 Just spoke with my Service Writer about their research into a 18" wheel/tire donut spare. They've been trying different combos and fitting them to the trunk. The tire I submitted is not available nor would it fit in the trunk, after their measurements. They contend that the largest Space Saver wheel/tire combo that will fit in the trunk's wheel well is a standard T16 Ford wheel (like Kal's) with a Continental T155/80D16.That measures out to being 0.57" smaller than the 18" wheel/tire size and they feel that it will not present any driving problems. That is not exactly what was said to me in the beginning, but times change.Anyway, I had them order it. But just to make sure, when the spare w/t arrives they will install it on the front of my car and we'll go for a drive. If all is good it goes in the trunk and I'm done. BTW, this Dealer just sold a fleet of FFH's and the purchasing company had them put a full size wheel/tire (w/jack/lug wrench) in each car's trunk, loose. The wheel well's foam insert stays put w/ TMK and the full size spare is to be used in case of need. We're not the only folks concerned about having a spare. 2 mokee and erichFla reacted to this
erichFla Report post Posted March 28, 2013 GrySql , did you read the Post in the Welcome thread were the guy had a semi flat after hitting something in the road and it cut his sidewall. Lucky for him it didn't cut through but only leaks air and Goodyear doesn't have his tire in stock because it's so new. Now he's driving around on a dangerous cut tire that could blow out any time. I hope Ford will see the error of their ways and start putting the correct size spare tires in these FFH's. It's the RIGHT thing to do, as peoples lives could be at stake. GrySql Report post Posted March 28, 2013 Yes, saw that post. I agree with you, hence all this unnecessary work I've been doing. This is something that a lot of car brands and models are doing, eliminating spare tires is a wide spread tactic these days.I think there have been at least 4-5 other people that have had unrepairable flats that have reported here. Luckily my exact 18" tire is available from TireRack atm.I don't want to store extra tires so I'll cross the replacement bridge when I come to it.Road hazard insurance is becoming scarce too. I'll probably get my next set from Costco, they do back their tires. Both my cars have new tires right now, hope I can wear them out. 1 erichFla reacted to this
erichFla Report post Posted March 30, 2013 (edited) I went down to my dealership today and looked at a Regular Fusion SE with 18" G.Y. Eagle LS2 on it, so I asked to look at the spare and it was a T125/80R16 97M . It was a MAXXIS branded Donut Spare tire.My guy said he would check if it would fit my Hybrid model and give me a call back. The attachments below are from the Regular Fusion SE, sorry for the poor quality but took Pic. with cell phone camera. GrySql Report post Posted March 30, 2013 (edited) Sure, the standard SE's have those small spares, their Owner's Manual explains it all.We know it'll fit in the FFH's trunk wheel well when the foam is removed.Edit: That spare has about a 2.5" smaller diameter than an 18" GY Eagle LS2.The one I ordered is 0.57" smaller. Have him put it on the front of your car and drive it around, there is no better test. Sounds like we'll have the whole silly issue solved soon.Nice work. The '13 FFH's have the new Ford built HF-35 eCVT, much different than the standard Fusion automatic. In the end, all this "no spare in the FFH's" may simply be saving weight for MPG's and a profit maker for Ford and other car manufacturers. Why every Service Dept has a different answer is frustrating though. GrySql Report post Posted April 9, 2013 (edited) Just spoke with my Dealer about when my spare and wheel are coming in, soon was the answer. The wheel is in, tire is not.Because the tire is such an oddball size it was a special order from the tire manufacturer and is taking longer than expected. It's a T-135/90-16 Continental. That makes it just 0.57" smaller diameter and 22 less revolutions than my existing 18" wheel/tire. GrySql Report post Posted April 15, 2013 (edited) GrySql, is the wheel you ordered the standard Fusion spare? The wheel? Yes, T16x4T standard Fusion wheel (CV6Z1015B). It's the tire I ordered that is different, it's a larger diameter but supposedly will fit the FFH's wheel well, according to my dealer's measurements.I still don't have it so can't say more than that.I wish it would show up soon, I'm getting tired (pun) of waiting.Edit: I just called, my wheel and tire are in, will pick up soon but they are getting two CV axles so they can change mine out because of the 'cracking, popping' sounds. Then we'll put the new spare on the front and see how it goes. Tire #1, on the left, is the stock spare size, tire #2 is the one I ordered.Notice the diameter difference and the rev's per mile, spare to spare tire. GrySql Report post Posted April 18, 2013 (edited) Took long enough to get this project finished but now it's complete. The Foam Insert is out, the spare is in. The exact part numbers that I have on my receipt are:QTY - FP NUMBER DESCRIPTION 1 - CV6Z-1015-B T16" x 4" WHEEL ASSEMBLY 1 - 9002-0340377-000 T135/90R16 tire, Continental My Dealer mounted/balanced the bigger than stock Continental T135/90-16 spare tire on a T16x4T standard Fusion spare tire wheel (CV6Z1015B).1. Does it fit in the trunk wheel well?' YES, exactly, with no room to spare (pun intended). 2. Is this larger spare tire/wheel the same size as the optional 18" wheel/tire on my car? Almost, this wheel/tire setup is only 1/2" difference in diameter. Note: The standard Fusion spare tire/wheel combo is over 2-1/2" smaller than my optional 18" tire/wheels. That is a huge difference in size. 3. How does it drive on the car? Pretty well, with hands off the steering wheel it drove straight.Again, stopping with hands off the steering wheel showed only a slight tug to the direction of the spare. The dealer tire tech and I drove around for about 10 minutes with speeds up to 50mph. Handling was acceptable, stops were easy, all was fine for a Temp Spare.I guess we didn't drive long enough because the TPMS light didn't come on, nor did any other dash alerts. Stowing the spare in the car:It's a snug fit, does not need the hold down screw. That's good because I stowed it inverted, so the inside of the wheel is up, allowing some storage.I was able to get the Ford Tire Mobility Kit, some road flares, jumper cables and funnel to nestle in there, all level and flat. Where to stow the Jack/Lug Wrench combo?I did it this way and it works just fine. Edit: I have since removed the bulky TMK and added some tools and other helpful items. That's Awesome GrySql, Now we have a nice sized tire (is it fully inflated too) that fits and not to much smaller Dia. than the height of the original 18" only little over 1/2 " difference. Great.I hope Continental is stocking these new tires. Great work, time and effort everyone has put into this project. Thank You to ALL. One Last thing about the Spare Tire GrySql. You'll have to Post later if you do notice a difference in your MPG and about how much, if any, not that it's going to make that much difference if you truly want to carry a Real Spare tire with you instaed of a can of inflate a flat. GrySql Report post Posted April 19, 2013 (edited) Aye, glad it's finally in the trunk. I'm sure Tire Rack or a Dealer can order this sized tire, that's all the Dealer's Parts Dept did. There are other brands in that size too. Now, where to store the Jack w/integrated handle? It's too long to fit inside the 16" spare wheel, no place else for storage in the car or under the hood.I scratched my head for quite some time and ended with a non-elegant solution, for now. It's now hanging upside down in the trunk, from the rear speaker deck. The Jack base is against a indentation in the deck, almost level with the roof of the trunk.I takes up almost no extra cargo room because there are other protrusions in front and behind it.I used 3 heavy gauge Zip-ties to anchor it, with a rubber pad between the metal deck and the Jack base - no rattles, no vibration.I'll just cut the Zip-ties if the Jack is needed, replace when time allows.I'm still thinking about this, may change things later. Great Pictue and description. I think you are on top of it and about the only suitable place for it, keeping ALL together in one area. The only thing I would add to your Kit is something to cut those Zip ties with OR change it to some kind of re- useable heavy duty strap and buckle system. Even with a sharp knife those Big Zip Ties are hard to cut espically for the Wife.GrySql you've done an excellent job.I just thought of something, what about those ratchet straps going length wise, anyway you could use those. GrySql Report post Posted April 19, 2013 (edited) Paid $40 for the Jack w/lug wrench from EBay.Didn't shop for the wheel/tire, paid $300 for W/T, mount & balance at my Dealer.I could have bought a lot of gas for that amount of $, but sometimes we are in very remote places.--erichFla,Regarding the jack placement, the strap idea is probably where I'll end up, maybe even use pop rivets to hold the straps in place.I looked at it today and this won't work with a Sony system with all those speakers. erichFla Report post Posted April 20, 2013 (edited) Story Time.Re; Spare Tire and other stuff: ...... I just got back from my Dealership and things are not so good here ( I guessed that going there) but I guess I'll have to shop elsewhere. First I told them about the Shifter Knob , they said not a problem after they looked it up on their computer and found the FORD letter to ALL Dealers with the 13B03 Customer Satisfaction attachment to it. But they didn't have it in Stock, I also knew that too. It's been ordered now. Then I told them about the Clicking Sound from the Front end of the car, what else he said. The battery, I can't get it to fully charge and your guy couldn't do it either, hum, Ok, anything else , Yes. The Global opening & closeing of the windows sometimes work, sometimes not. OK. Anything else, Yes , I would like to buy a spare wheel and tire , Ok see Parts Dept. By the way we'll address all your problems all at once when your shift knob arrives. So I go over to buy the Spare Tire and Wheel. I ordered the Same wheel as GrySql did because I took the Ford part Numbers with me. That will be $162.00 for the Wheel only, you have to go over to the Tire Dept office next set of door over for the Tires. Ok, I go in there and ask to order a Continental T135/90-16 tire,, after ONE phone call his answer was, " I can't find that size, sorry you'll have to get it off the internet or somewhere else. " I turned and walked out the door shakeing my head. They sure don't want my business. So now I have a Pre Paid in Full, wheel on order and No tire to go on it. Nor will they even Look for it. I sure don't understand their business practices or their Customer Relations. So now I've got to hunt down a tire from the Internet. Hopefully I can find one. milleron Report post Posted April 20, 2013 Or just take your parts list to your local discount tire place or Costco and ask them to special order it. That's what I intend to do when my car arrives. I'm almost positive that it'll be less expensive than the Ford dealer, but I'll probably buy the wheel online. For example, it's $124.31 including shipping at teamfordparts.com, and I'm sure there are other places like that on the Web, as well. By the way, another example is that my dealer wants over $2,100 for the Premium ESP but Flood Ford in Rhode Island sells it for $975 -- exactly the same plan. 1 erichFla reacted to this
