Spare Tire for fusion hybrid

I was looking around and found that apparently the lug pattern is a 5 x 4.25 or 5 x 108 . I found a list online of cars with apparently the same pattern, and was curious if anyone has tried any of these to see if they would fit. I don't have my car yet, or I would be out investigating this. I also feel like a spare tire is a necessity. If anyone checks this out, please post what works, so I could find one myself. Steve

Lug pattern may be the same, but wheel offset, overall diameter and clearance for the brakes are other factors to keep in mind.

Finding a spare that will match all those parameters for my 18" wheels is difficult, Ford doesn't offer one that I can find.

 

The standard 2013 Fusion 16" spacesaver spare seems a great idea until you try and use it with different sized wheels.

The FFH's standard wheel is 17".

One thing to do, use a tire comparator and look at the overall diameter of the various wheel/tire combinations and find a spare that matches the OD. The 17" vs 18" wheels are the same outside diameter, and the 16 may be the same.

I don't think rim size is going to matter. I would think all different size rims are going to have about the same height tire. Just not as much sidewall as the rim diameter gets larger. I am hoping some guys wanting a spare like myself will look into what may work and post it. My car was just ordered last week, so who knows when I will be checking this out. I could be wrong on this though.

What we need is a volunteer who has a real '13 Fusion spare tire to measure the darn thing - diameter, height, width and the tire size (example = T145/70R-16)

acdii, what size spare is in your 2010 hybrid?

We could get the diameter from that tire size for comparison.

 

I found what is reported to be a '10 Fusion spare tire, T145/70R17 - has a 24.9" diameter.

My Eagle LS-2 235/45R18 are 26.3".

 

If I was to get a spare I'd want it real close to the diameter of my 18" wheel/tires.

The stock 17" tire for the 2010 is .82" smaller than the 13 18" tire. So if the spart tire is of the same diameter as the standard tire, then it should be OK.

If the 2010's spare wheel is a 17" and would actually fit the '13, then getting a bit larger space saver tire would answer.

Being an inch or more off diameter size would probably throw the traction and other drive train computer systems off, and other unpleasant things.

 

I have another idea that I'll try tomorrow.

That makes it 1.2" lower than an the 2013 18" wheel with Eagle LS-2 tire.

Close, but I wonder if the computers will notice that big a difference.

That is even smaller, a 2.42" difference from the 18" w/Eagle LS-2's.

Might fit in the trunk though.

I didn't come up with this different diameter wheel issue, it would not have occurred to me that a small spare would cause a problem..

This concern is simply because I've read many other Forums about this, Mustang, Fusion, Corvette, etc.

Some have brake clearance issues, but all the Ford Forums are concerned about the digital controls for the drive train and damage that can happen, plus the possibility the car's computer will just got into 'limp' mode.

I don't really know, just trying to find out because I'd like a spare, if it won't hurt anything when I use it.

There is a reason Ford didn't put a spare in these cars, besides weight and cost.

 

I am often in the big deserts and other strange places out west and a spare would be very handy, if needed.

I'm at the Dealer now, we had a committee meeting about this. They confirm that over about a 1/2" diameter difference will activate the traction control and other warnings and probably disable the car. The hybrid specialist mechanic could not be more specific and finally just said - don't do it without the correct size spare that matches your wheels diameter.

The other thing mentioned was that space is limited and a bigger donut wheel/tire may not fit in the FFH's trunk well.

They are doing a global part search to try and find a spare that is close in size to my wheels, Lincoln or whatever.

I have AAA already and the warranty, guess that will have to do for now.

 

Meanwhile, the correct leather gearshift shift knob is being installed, car filled with gas, lunch was provided.

Before we leave I will be shown how to change the cabin air filter.

They gave me a price of $155 for a temp spare wheel and they are looking into the proper tire for it and they'll get back to me. It won't have a air pressure sensor so the light will be on on the dash, but they don't want to mess up the traction / ABS system with the wrong size.

That is what my Dealer is doing too, getting the proper wheel and will try and find a tire to make it the right diameter.

They have a few FFH's in stock and will measure the trunk tire well for fit too.

I may have a shot at getting a spare and jack after all, hooray for us!

I'm working on this ASAP but I can tell you it is not so simple.

My dealer can sell me a standard spare, no problem, but has advised me not to use it with my wheel/tire setup. (See above posts for reasons why)

What another Dealer says may differ, I choose to believe my 5-star dealers hybrid specialist and his supervisors.

 

Matching an 18" wheel with the Eagle LS2's is not quite as easy as you might suppose, then fit that in the FFH's trunk wheel well.

I have found out that a 2003 Windstar Jack and Lug wrench fit (supposedly), they're cheap enough on Ebay. I'll know for sure next week.

I've identified a donut spare wheel/tire combo that has the right diameter and trying to find a wheel with the correct bolt pattern.

I'll know more soon.

 

My FFH's trunk wheel well is 26.25"W X 5.5"D.

There is an almost direct replacement spare for the GY Eagle LS2' 234/45R18, it's diameter is almost identical.

The Space Saver (Donut) size is T145/80D17. This 17" SS tire is 5.71" in width so it will barely fit the FFH's trunk wheel well's depth.

These all have to have a maximum diameter of 26.25" to fit the FFH Trunk wheel well.

 

I am looking to find a space saver 17" wheel that will bolt directly to the FFH with the 5 X 4.5 bolt pattern and has adequate clearance for the brakes.

There may be another tire possibility that has recently been used on certain cars with a '90D' profile on a 16" wheel.

My thoughts exactly ... unless the overall size of the 18" wheels on the gas and hybrids are different? Could the regenerative brakes have anything to do with it?
