MPG Happy Talk

Recommended Posts

The discrepancy between what the trip shows and what actually goes into the tank is discouraging. Mine sits at 45 most of the time, but the actual is always nearly 3 MPG lower.

I consistently see a 2 MPG difference.

Today, I got my best mileage ever coming back from lunch. Going to lunch was 30 MPG, which was better than normal too.

Coming back was 89 MPG. No A/C coming or going. This car is a different animal with no A/C. EV+ at work probably helped stay in EV going up the parking garage. It seems like short trips are less affected if there is no A/C.

Same for me. This week, my commutes have all been high 40s, closer to 50. The key being no A/C use. The Houston Summer has been tough on mileage. Hopefully the cooler weather is here to stay. If I only drove to and from work, my MPGs would be quite a bit higher than they are. It's the short trips on weekends that brings me down.

I just had my first 50+ MPG tank since 5/16/13. Not complaining about "only" high 40s MPG, but I am glad the summer is over. The last 10 days of actually having 50 and 60 degree temperatures in the morning, along with lower humidity has done wonders for the gas economy.

Here's the formula: NO A/C = more $ in my wallet

Every so often my FFH hits the magic number. 60 FWY to the 10 FWY, 11:30am, from South El Monte to LAX. ACC set at 62 MPH, A/C on set at 70 F, ambient temp 75 F.

I make this trip every weekend, next week I'll set the ACC at the posted 65mph, and see what happens.

Maybe 10,000 miles will be the magic mileage number.

Really nice surprise coming home today. I didn't pay as much attention as I usually do while I was talking to my wife for the entire time.

Looks like my FFH got the sequence down pretty well. Actually my MPG results between morning and afternoon have switched since it got a bit colder.

This morning it was 48.5 MPG and here the afternoon commute.

Here's my formula: No HVAC when the wife is in the car and she takes half of all my money.

Yes, I'm whipped.... :spend:

kjddwij hbejjv ohhef j ek jefje dirty rotten rackafrach. You 50*ers are beginning to annoy me. Actually I have been able to get the occassional trip above 50, but there are too many below 40 to keep the average above 40.

Your mileage is pretty much like mine. Car is saying 38.3 mpg lifetime, but that's not what I get when I calculate it (that's 37.49 MPG). Then again, hubby drives more than I, and he's got a heavier foot than I do. I frequently use the 'foot off the gas, let it click into EV mode, then slowly maintain acceleration to keep it in EV mode as much as possible' trick, which he doesn't. Still, better than what we get in our VUE!

Optimism is nice, but reality sucks. :)

either that or gremlins are drinking the stuff over night.

It is still nice to see 47 MPG on a 40* morning though.

i agree i always see in trip A 45 mpg - 46 mpg per tank but when i go to fill up fuelly says 43 mpg - 44 mpg, but it has gotten better last tank car said 44.3 mpg and fuelly said 44.1 so maybe after 13k miles its almost accurate

Since I rolled 10K yesterday after 4 months 11 days, wont be long to hit 13K, so I will see if that holds true! :P

No Ford wouldn't believe that it's probably the PCM update and that you have adopted to driving a hybrid!

I'm kidding by the way glad to hear you are a happy camper. I didn't drive in this morning so I can't tell you my MPG # (maybe 9999.9 MPG) ;-) ?

I am in Oregon as we are on our trip to the great Northwest. I have some AMAZING results to post, but I want to get my ducks in a row and get my numbers accurate. I have seen close to a 500 mile leg in mountains at over 47 and another leg in mountains of over 46. It is silly how little I have spent on fuel so far on this trip .... :)

I will start a new thread on this in the lounge in a day or two .... :yahoo:

PS, no AC really really really makes a difference. We had about 100 miles of snow through the mountains of Wyoming following a plow, and it still was over 45 ... Woo Hoo!

Edit: here is the promised thread :)

I've experienced nothing but upper 30s to mid 40s in my car since I drove it off the lot three weeks ago. Yes, I probably drive it gingerly, but I have NO complaints. My commutes are 60 miles each way and I usually see 43 mpg and 1.2 gallons of gas used. Not bad, IMHO.

Pre-update, my morning commute saw low to mid-30s for MPG. This morning with the temp at 43 degrees, I got 45.6 mpg, with 80% of the speeds between 65-68 mph. All my morning trips for the past three weeks have seen MPGs in the 40's. I did charge my 12v last night, which could have helped, but I also think the more miles you get on the FFH, the better your mileage will be. Mine has never run better or quieter, with the BS message being its only flaw.

Took a friend to the airport today, Just dropped them off and returned home. Total round trip was 107.7 miles. About half the distance was on two lane 55 mph highway and the other half was interstate at 65 or 70 mph. Drove most of the trip with ACC set at the posted speed limits. Total trip yielded 49 mpg per the car's computer. Not too shabby!

Made same trip today to pick up returning friend and round trip mileage was 51.4 mpg.

Happy to report, another 25* morning, and 45.4 MPG. I even used remote start this morning to warm up the car. Was nice to get in the car and not freeze. Also had a full charge on the HVB.

Just popping in to say that I am thrilled to see this thread still going strong :)

I have had the upgrade for a couple of weeks now, and it looks like I'm getting about at 10% improvement or so. My numbers are pretty consistently in the very high 30's to low or mid 40's. I'm really happy with this car, all the way around, and was just thinking this morning that I might keep this one for a while. I usually get the itch to get a new (to me) vehicle every few years, but the longer I drive my Fusion, the more it becomes like an old glove that fits comfortably. I still have less than 10K on it (noticed today on the way to work that the odometer read 7777.7) so there's still a lot of driving yet to be done. I don't know how I'll feel in another three years, but right now I'm just really happy in my Fusion.
