Cooling system stinks up car even in winter

I get the smell to a GREAT Degree w/ AC on / re-Circulate off. I get the smell to a significant lessor degree w/ Heat on and Re-Circulate off.

I have not had the dealer to anything.

I find if i keep re-circulate ON, I do not have a problem. IF I start the car and re-circulate is off - i'll get a 'smell' reminder - and i'll turn re-circulate back on...and the smell is gone.

 

During the summer - i did try the advise given about - 3 minutes from home - turning AC off - turning up blower - I have done that, and next time i turn on the car the smell is not quite as bad....but there still. (so i turn Re-circulate on, problem solved for me).

 

 

 

 

But the fact is that you shouldn't have to go through that process to not have a horrible smell in your car. What other car have you ever had to do that with? In mine, it doesn't matter if it was on recirculate or not. There is an obviously problem with a good amount of these cars and Ford isn't acknowledging it. Edited November 30, 2013 by Riggo

Anyone know if other non-hybrid Fusions are experiencing this problem too? What about the Lincolns? So far mine has not exhibited the problem. Knock on wood!

Mine is a Hybrid. So far, Knock on Wood, Mine has not had this problem and I'm in S. Fla. and we use the recirculation air conditioning all the time.

It's so strange how some of these cars have this problem and not others. I wish Ford would figure out what is causing it.

Ashley, everyone on this Thread that has been to a Dealer has not had anything but a temporary fix, if that. Please, get some hard answers about this and if what we are smelling is a type of mold from moist air sitting in the system.

Mine has just starting to do this musty air thing and after reading the horror stories about the different things that have been attempted, the days without the car and then no resolution, I am going to wait until some logical remedy is available before I start a Dealer project over this. My Dealer is 60 miles away. I don't want to drive that far to have someone spray Renuzit in the system, pat me on the head and send me home.

I definitely understand your frustration about this, but I'm not a trained vehicle technician. Additionally, it is extremely difficult to speculate as to the cause of the odor without actually being there to smell it, which is why your dealer is the best option for diagnosing it. I'm happy to set up those having this concern with their regional customer service manager, so they can help facilitate the discussion with your dealer and get the ball rolling on this. I'll just need the info I asked for in my previous post. :)

Sounds like Ford still doesn't think there is a flaw with the design or build of some of these cars. Great.

What the system needs is a method of killing off the mold spores in the system so they dont keep growing. A UV light would do the trick.

Got a call today from my local service guy. It was in response to my email to ashley... Still dont think they have a cure...but atleast ashley is doing her part :) THANKS!

Today I received a call from my area CSM, he was courteous and took my complaint and gave me a Case number.

He then reviewed any TSB's or other possible fixes (none) and made a note to keep his eye on this issue and forward the complaint info to Ford Engineering.

If my cars problem excalates I will to take it to the Dealer, this CSM will track it's progress and assist if necessary.

Hi Everyone. Bought a brand new 2013 Ford Fusion in Ontario Canada. I love the car, but ever since I bought it I have noticed a strange smell that is coming from the vents when the heat is on. A/C does not produce this smell. It is not a mold smell, but a smell that is toxic. The car has 4000 miles on it now and its still there. It is so bad that I cannot drive with the heat on at all. Now with sub-zero weather I am dying in my car! At first I was thinking it was part of the new car smell and that it would off gas as time goes by. I have also ran the car on the driveway with the heat on to expedite the off-gassing, but the smell is persistent and is not going away. Anyone have an idea on what it is. The smell seems to be worse when it is on AUTO mode. I had this looked at. Dealer didn't do a thing. Actually I don't think they even popped the hood. No one was able to smell it, except for me. I took a ride in their other Fusions and none of them had this characteristic smell. Of course they were trying to smell it in the shop with the windows open, so that shop smell really masked it. I am a point I do not know what to do. Dealer thinks I am crazy, but the smell is there. I sat in other cars and none of them do it!

My car is not a Hybrid. Someone forwarded me here from another Fusion forum... and I am just extremely frustrated. I paid a lot of money for a car I love, but can't stand to drive!

I had a smell that reeked - thought it was cat urine. Took it to the dealer to get the Cabin Air Filter replaced (with other items, too). They sprayed Fabreeze in the duct because they didn't have the part They took 2 (TWO) weeks to get a filter and 8 (EIGHT) hours to replace it - not to mention the $78 for the parts and labor.

Ford - you didn't have a better idea.

However, the smell disappeared and hasn't been back.

I had a Hyundai Veracruz, it was a really nice car, but not AWD and traded it for the AWD Flex. However I had left the tailgate open one day while doing something and one of the barn cats got in there and must have sprayed. I could not find where he did it, but man did it stink in there after a few weeks. I finally just washed everything, carpets, seats, floors, in between things you dont normally clean, and finally got the smell to dissipate. It didn't smell like cat pee though, but was not that nice of a smell, so who knows what he shot out his back end.

It's for Arbitration by Camvap. I have already got it to the buyback stage. The car is now going to a camvap approved third party inspection but I want it be recorded on the record as being a more wide spread problem.

So what you are doing is to try helping others with the same problem to get it resolved through your arbitration? As far as you are concerned though, your Buyback and LL is done and over?

Yes I'm trying to get it to be a legitimized to this case. As for now ford see's the problem as only being that some people don't like the smell of the car,, - what I was told from Ford Customer Care directly
