Cooling system stinks up car even in winter

Got my FFH back today after having the Climate Control Housing TSB done. No odors, no rattles, the after market ambient lighting works and all my presets were still available. Having the radio and system presets available surprised me. I thought for sure that I would have to reprogram everything, so I took pictures of all the radio presets before I gave the car to the dealer. The repair took one week.

Our usual SA is back. I told them that you would probably be in after I posted with positive results. I don't think there is much of a line at this time. Because our usual SA was off for three months he wasn't aware of the AC musty smell. I was the first at our dealer to have this TSB done. The next one, your FFH, may take less time.

Following gkinla's lead on this TSB, a few days ago I began the process to have my HVAC system replaced at the same Dealer we use.

One good item to start with was that I gave my details to Ashley, our Ford Rep, in January and she had a CSM call me back then to give me a Case number.

What that accomplished was to nullify the requirement for me to have the Dealer do the 'sniff' test and diagnose the issue.

My SA was able to use the Case number and have the necessary parts ordered without that extra trip, hooray. Thank you Ashley!

 

I was just called by my SA to relate that the first HVAC unit for gkinla's job was delivered with bad seals.

The Service Tech team that is going to do the work will not schedule until they inspect the incoming HVAC unit for defects.

When that is done I will be called for scheduling, they expect that mine will take 4 work days for the two person Tech Team that did gkinla's job.

 

I find it easy to believe that our Dealer has won the Ford President's Award for Service the last 7 years in a row.

With 140 service bays and more certified Ford Tech's than almost any Dealer in the US I am indeed fortunate.

Guess what, the HVAC that arrived at the Service Department for my car also had bad seals and a broken bracket so they have ordered yet another unit.

That makes two of three expensive Evap systems that were delivered in non-op condition.

Actually, the words used were 'crushed seals and broken bracket. This sounds more like a warehousing/shipping issue.

Wasn't there a post or two a while back about someone getting the fuel delivery module replacement recall done and being delayed since the parts arrived damaged? Inadequate packaging or careless shipping or whatever...

I replaced my tail lights with the Ti lights and the packaging was inadequate. The four lights came in flimsy boxes with just brown paper loosely wrapped around the lights. There was no damage but it could have been a disaster. I guess Ford will take a chance with cheap inadequate packaging than expensive form fitting styrofoam.

You should see when we get shipments from HQ maybe Ford can take some training ;)

One time we received aluminum right angle brackets about 6"x12" and they were single packed in box 6x12x24" filled with bubble wrap. This box was placed in another box 12x18x30" filled with bubble wrap again. We had ordered 3 and received 3 boxes....

 

Those might not be the exact dimension but you get the idea.

Well I'm back still fighting, just letting everyone know I can release the full inspection info I have on the problem with the 13 and 14 fusion hvac systems in a month and a half. There is no fix currently that will work FYI. There is to be a redesigning of the whole system that is in the process but not completed yet.

I went back and re-read your other posts, so what your saying is, the work I just had done with Ford replacing the CCH is not going to work for the long run and Ford will have to redo it in future. I can't believe that Ford would spend this much money on something that is only a temporay fix. If you have this inspection report and can release it, please do so. Dangling this info for those who have had this repair done and for those who are scheduled to have it done would be good info for future decisions.

I'm sorry but they did it to our car and it lasted a week and a half. I had the same hopes as you. But unless they have completed the new production hvac system and redesign of the cowl which is in the works as I'm told the attempt is futile. But let this be known Ford does know this they have the report.

So, what was done? Was it just the spray chemical YN29, or did you have the Climate Control Housing changed, which is, Ford TSB 14-0099. This is a three to four day operation, the spray is 1 hour. I had the spray YN29 done 2 months ago and the musty smell came back in 3 weeks. (I don't know what was worse the musty smell, or the toxic odor of the YN29).

 

Since the CCH has been changed, I'm very happy with the results. The smell is new car clean and hoping it stays this way.

I'd say the toxic smell from the YN29. I'm still wondering if I did harm to my body from breathing that stuff in.

Gkinla, I was at our Dealer today (buying another car) and the second CCH was just delivered, but not inspected for damage as yet.

I'll call our SA and ask how it is tomorrow. I am scheduled for this work to be done next Monday, a scheduled full-time 4 day job for two Master Tech's.

 

I was talking to my saleman this afternoon and he watched your unit being worked on by the two brothers that are the Dealers best Tech's at this type job.

He said it actually took three people to remove and replace the unit from/to the car, it was a difficult moment for them. It generated a small crowd to see how it was done.

I was also told that the Dealer and Ford are at odds about the labor costs for this.

 

Having hear all this today I find this other discussion that it is futile awfully illogical by Ford.

They issued a TSB for the 'fix', is it just 'marketing and PR ploy?'

Spending this amount of money for something that will not work is almost absurd from a corporate sense.

Either way, when the right parts show up I'm getting it done, I trust my Dealer and his Tech's.

This is Warranty work and if it needs to be done again in the future, so be it.

 

I take comfort that gkinla has not had a further occurrence of the musty smells.

My SA told me today that my part (2nd one) did not arrive.

Even though my 2nd one is on emergency order there are none to be had, they are back-ordered.

 

Ford is telling the Dealers that new units for this TSB are being built ASAP and 100 will be released next week, with another 100 released the week after that.

I am in the TSB 14-0099 Lottery and will be told when I win the Big Casino Jackpot.

I have been having that smell too, for awhile, but I didn't think much about posting about it until now.

 

Count me in as having it. I'm in northern California where the weather is so nice that I don't use the A/C except in the colder winter and really hot summer days. Mostly, I drive with the 4 windows and the sun-roof open.

 

When I do use the A/C, it is in Auto mode. I think I notice the smell in the rare times when I just turn the fan on without the A/C compressor.

My repair was completed yesterday for the bad smell from the a/c, per the Ford TSB 14-0099. I must say it made me rather nervous to see the heart and lungs of my car come out like it did (pictures below) but everything seems to be back in place and after day 1 of driving it. I've not noticed anything loose, broken, squeaking, or not operating. Best of all of course, the air smells normal! I don't have to be embarrased when giving someone a ride anymore.

 

I'll give it about 6000 warm weather miles before declaring victory, but so far so good and my fingers remain crossed.

 

BTW, it took 2 solid days for them to do the work, and I overheard the grumbling from the mechanics on how difficult it was.

 

I was tempted to ask if I could keep the defective unit so that I could dissect it. I wanted to take pictures of exactly what it is on the inside that was the root cause of the smell and post them. However, I assumed they would need to send it back to Ford and I didn't bother asking.

They even took the doors off to get the dash apart. I'm happy I didn't see this part of the operation (pun attended). I wouldn't have slept for three days.

 

So 1-1/2 weeks after having the TSB 14-00999 done , still no rattles, everything still works.

Regarding that, I just had a CSM call me and she is going to get involved in expediting a new Evap/CCH unit to my Dealer.

She said she'd contact my SA and work with him on this parts back-order problem.
