Motorcraft 5W-20 vs Amsoil 10W-30

I've read a few posts on oil changes. Seems like both the I4 and V6 use 5W-20 Motorcraft oil.

I have an 08 3.0L V6.

I am also an Amsoil fan.

I was thinking of using Amsoil 10W-30 Full Synthetic oil instead of Motorcraft 5W-20 oil.

Yes, I know Amsoil makes other weights (0W-20, 0W-30, 5W-20, 5W-30 etc) I just happen to have 10W-30 on my shelf.

 

What are your thoughts on running Amsoil as opposed to Motorcraft oil?

No issue with Amsoil per se but there is no way I would use 10W-30. The engine is designed to use 5W-20 synthetic blend motorcraft oil. The spec for the oil is in the owner's manual - make sure that whatever you use meets that spec. I think that requires 5W-20 or 0W-20.

Yes. Once again, it's very simple. If it doesn't meet Ford spec WSS-M2C930-A, you don't use it.

 

From Amsoil's website:

 

APPLICATIONS:

AMSOIL Synthetic 10W-30 Motor Oil is recommended for use in gasoline engines and other applications requiring any of the listed worldwide specifications:

 

* API SM/CF, SL, SJ ...

* ILSAC GF-4, 3 ...

* ACEA A1/B1, A5/B5

* JASO VTW

* GM 4718M, 6094M

* Ford WSS-M2C205-A

* Daimler Chrysler MS-6395N

* VW 503.00

 

Amsoil 10W-30 synthetic does not meet Ford spec for your Fusion's engine. Therefore, you shouldn't use it.

By Ford spec, which spec are you referring to?

I see oils have specs of

API SM/CF, SL or

ILSAC GF-4,3 or

ACEA A5/B5

ACEA A1/B/1

JASO MA

ISO-L-EMA etc., etc.

 

What is the Ford spec.

I will then check out the specs on other oils.

 

I really want to learn something here...

The one Artie quoted for you. It's also spelled out in the owner's manual. Any time you have ANY question about a fluid or filter you should look up the spec or part number in the owner's manual.

I looked up Ford spec WSS-M2C930-A (found it here http://www.ilma.org/resources/ford_service_fill_specs.pdf )

It states this "3.2 PERFORMANCE

Shall meet all the requirements of the “ILSAC GF-4 Minimum Performance Standard for

Passenger Car Engine Oils"

 

So ILSAC GF-4... looks like the Amsoil meets that spec and others.

I am still confused though.

I'll have to study the different Ford specs WSS-M2C205-A and WSS-M2C930-A and see if I can find out why they are different.

Is there a Ford engineer here in this forum? Perhaps he can help us out.

I decided to use Amsoil 0W-20 oil as opposed to Amsoil 10W-30.

Amsoil 0W-20 does in fact meet the WSS-M2C930-A spec.
