Vent

I can't seem to find a vent setting on my 2010 FFH (Rapid Spec 502a with the Nav system). By vent setting, I mean a climate setting in which untreated (not heated or cooled) outside air is brought into the car through the upper vent registers. It seems like the air is always either heated or cooled, unless the inside temperature setting is very close to the outside temperature. Also, with the fan off no outside air enters the car.

 

All my previous cars (mostly Toyotas) enabled untreated outside air to enter the car without the fan being on. Any suggestions?

Looks like you'll have to leave it in manual mode with A/C off and adjust the temperature as needed. Off closes the outside air door.

Hi zabarnick. :D You can vent in unheated and non-cooled air. As akirby stated, if you leave the HVAC system set to "ON" in manual mode, no "Recirculate", no "A/C", no "AUTO", no front "Defroster" and the temperature setting set to the minimum (60 on the EATC system) or any other setting below the outside ambient air temperature, the system will simply vent unheated and non-cooled outside air into the cabin (unless of course, the outside air temperature is less than 60). Then just set the fan to the minimum setting and it will essentially vent in as you want.

 

When in manual mode, the HVAC system can heat the air, but it can not cool the air any lower than the ambient outside air temperature. The only time the HVAC air can be cooled below the outside air temperature is when the "A/C" , "AUTO" or front defroster settings are in use. Of course, the air vented in will usually be slightly warmer than the ambient temperature outside no matter what, due to the effects of engine compartment heat on the HVAC ducting.

 

If you check your Owners Manual, you will find it explains all of this in better detail and gives full explanations of how the system works.

It takes a little fiddling, but if you have the Nav screen it can be done. I'm going to assume your Fusion works the same way my MKZ does. I hit the CLIMATE button on the center stack to get the graphics on the screen. Then touch the on-screen button for dash vents. The A/C will automatically come on. Hit the hard A/C button on the center stack to shut down the compressor. Lower the ACC temp to 60º and you've got just incoming air through the dash vents. A little fiddly, I know, but it works.

 

As bbf2530 says, the air will be warmer than the ambient air.

Interesting - the owner's manual for the FFH did not mention setting the temp to 60 to disable temp control. At least not in the climate control section.

Hi Allen. :D I know you did not quote my reply, but I think it may be my explanation that was a bit confusing, so maybe I can help. Setting the system to 60 (in manual mode) does not "disable the temp control". It will simply keep the HVAC system from heating or cooling outside air being vented in, unless the ambient temperature of the vented air is already below 60 (in which case it will be heated to 60). And in manual mode, with the A/C compressor turned off (no "A/C", no "AUTO", no front defroster), the compressor is off and can not cool the air below ambient temperature anyway. So as long as the ambient outside temperature is above 60, it will come in as unheated and no-cooled air (except for the unavoidable heating caused by engine compartment heat on the ducted air).

 

The Owners Manual explains how to use the system and may leave a bit too much of the figuring to imagination and/or common sense. So what I was trying to explain is how to get outside air vented in with no heating or cooling involved. So if a driver sets the HVAC to the manual settings (no A/C, no "AUTO", no front "Defroster"), then the A/C compressor is off and system can not cool the incoming air below its ambient temperature. Therefore, if the driver sets the system lower than the outside ambient air temperature (60 is as low as the system can be set), then the HVAC system will not heat the air (unless it is below 60 outside) and can not cool the air because the A/C compressor is off.

 

Hope this may clear up any confusion my first explanation may have caused.

I got it now. I thought that setting it to 60 might do something special like it does when using automatic mode since both you and drolds mentioned that.

 

So basically, you can't eliminate the temp control entirely but turning it down to 60 should work just fine.

Right, Allen. I only mentioned 60 because it's the lowest temp setting possible on the ACC. Obviously, this has limited usefulness, depending on ambient temps.

I can't imagine wanting colder than 60 degree air when it's colder than 60 outside anyway, but that's just me. :)
