jblas16 Report post Posted July 18, 2009 I'm wondering if others have thought about purchasing the maintenance plan for the FFH? It seems like it covers pretty much everything except tires. I'm looking at the 6 yr/100k plan. Any thoughts about pricing or whether it's worth it is appreciated!

smr2112 Report post Posted July 19, 2009 You mean the ESP warranty right? Or is this some new dealer "upsell" scam thatI'm learning about for the first time?
jeff_h Report post Posted July 19, 2009 You mean the ESP warranty right? Or is this some new dealer "upsell" scam that I'm learning about for the first time? No, this is different than the ESP warranty. You can prepay for maintenance and get it at a cheaper rate. Personally, I do my own maintenance and saw very little in the brochure that were beyond my capabilities and required my payment of hundreds to someone else... but for those that do not want to deal with it or do not mind heading to the dealership, it may be a viable option. The 2-page PDF brochure can be found at http://www.myfordwarranty.com/prem_maint_plan.pdf
rlawson4 Report post Posted July 19, 2009 I believe the ESP plan for unexpected expenses can be a good idea. I am against the maintenance plan. Those costs will remain relative consistent over the life of the car. I have not seen an explosion in the cost of oil changes etc. Plus, you may trade your car in for the new and improved Fusion Hybrid or some other car. I think it is not a good choice. We just picked up our FFH A502 in platinum white with charcoal black interior. I did get the ESP as this car is replacing a 1986 Saab 900S, which did not qualify for the CFC, that my wife is clinging to. When you keep a car, extended coverage can be worth it. The prepaid maintenance is also worth the added documentation of required maintenance for warranty work with the ESP. The extended warranty paid for itself on my Prius with one claim, the ECU replacement, which in 2003 the Prius came with free maintenance. With my schedule, I am lucky to wash and clean the vehicle. So pay it now or pay it later ... choice!

Some people appreciate covering the maintenance expence and extended warranty expense in their monthly car payment. You can shop the maintenance plans as well as the ESP plans before you purchase your vehicle - that will tell you if the price you are being quoted is in the ballpark. Any F/L/M dealership can sell you the ESP packages, just easier to finance if you get it with the vehicle purchase. I have found that when Ford Credit has an ESP promotion going (trips for top sales people, etc.) the dealerships are more likely to cut the suggested prices - so I just ask them if they are going to cut me a very good deal. I've spent $0 on repairs. Had I bought extended warranties I would be out $7500. Even if I had to replace a $3K transmission on one vehicle I'm still $4500 ahead. If you can afford to absorb the cost of a large repair you're better off in the long run to self-insure. You might get lucky on one or two vehicles but in the long run you'll save money. Otherwise the companies selling the warranties would be out of business.

I agree with your points...one thing to consider is that the FFH has many fairly new technical advances and some are unproven as far as reliability. The electronics and sensors can cost hundreds of dollars per shot. I think it all depends on how much you pay for the ESP. You can probably find the top end ESP with low deductible under $1500 if you shop around (good deal!). That and the peace of mind would be your gains. It's always a gamble and you might come out ahead on one or even a few vehicles. But you have to remember that the 2010 Fusion already has a 5 yr/60K mile warranty on the powertrain and a separate warranty on the unique hybrid components so the actual period covered by an extended warranty is less than it would be for a vehicle with only a 3/36 warranty. As for peace of mind - my mind is usually more peaceful knowing that I didn't spend $1500 on something I may or may not need. But maybe that's just me. It may be easier but I'll take cheaper if it outweighs the convenience factor. My dealer offered the ESP for $1,581 and I got it from another dealer for $845. This second dealer probably makes only $50-100 (my guess) on each contract but in my case they made $50-100 than my local dealer did. I think many dealers count on customers that might not shop around and would rather just lump it into one payment, but not this customer.

Go to www.myfordwarranty.com which is a dealer in Rhode Island. Mine was $845 since it is a 4yr/100k plan because I will hit 100k miles in just under 3 years. 1 month down, 3,700 miles... so I think the 7yr/100k is a bit higher in price but should still be better than your dealer will offer, if you want to roll the ESP cost into the purchase you can show your local dealer the cost and see if they will match it, IMHO they'd be foolish not to.
