The myth of pulse and glide

Recommended Posts

Not too wild about pulse/glide, except for when really trying to hypermile. But, I have noticed that I can get better mileage by doing, as others have mentioned, of doing near jack-rabbit take offs to get up to the target speed.

It is really difficult to drop old habits of easing onwards with the accelerator and driving as if there is a "raw egg between your foot and the accelerator". That's the way I used to drive. But now, I'll definitely have lower mileage driving the old way on this car, than I would with the faster acceleration.

So, I don't accelerate all that fast, but faster than I normally would, and then will feather the accelerator when I'm at the flow of traffic. I'm getting about 10mpg more than a Fusion with just the gasoline motor.

But, I am so intrigued by the idea of getting mid-40 mpg, even higher, if I drove in a flat area. I have nearly San Francisco type hills here. I would almost say that I would enjoy driving in Houston traffic, just to see how this car's economy would be---just for a day, no more. ;>)

I think the same way. I live on a hill. A Big Hill. Most of my 27 mile commute home is relatively flat, and I have been averaging 46-47 miles, until I get to the hill. By the time I pull in the driveway I am averaging 41-42 for the trip. I keep telling my wife if we lived at the bottom of the hill it would be so much better on my MPG's... :) I don't think she cares about my MPG's.... LOL

I have lots of "requirements" for various issues. That certainly would have to be one of them. My more infamous one is that if I moved into a new house, one of the first things I would find out would be if DSL high-speed internet exists in the area. I have no high speed internet where I live, and pay a terribly high price for HughesNet satellite internet to get the internet that I have.

So, getting back to the Hybrid, I can relate. I'd have to move about 200 miles away to get away from these hills. You don't see too many bicyclists out here!

I chose here because of cable modem or fiber (it was just cable modem in the last Century). It turns out I could walk to work back then, then things changed and I had a 15 mile commute... things keep changing... I could walk to work again, then work was 5 miles away (which I walked once, 2-1/2 hours). So now I drive my FFH to work.

I certainly pulse up small rises in the road. Lets face it, I have opened the hood once, so I am not the expert here, but I try to keep The Raven out of a mode where the ICE is spinning but not contributing power (isn't this the green bracket without the EV showing?)

Likewise....

I'll admit opening the hood a few times, trying to find something familiar! By removing the HYBRID plastic motor top, you can see an actual ICE. Almost was refreshing. Seeing two coolant refill reservoirs was sorta unnerving, so I had to break out the manual and read up on that.
