$1,700 tax credit

The $1,700 tax credit for an FFH or MMilanH runs from April 1 to September 30, 2009. Assuming you don't fall into the AMT trap or don't actually pay in over $1,700 in federal taxes throughout the year, you should qualify by ordering before the end of September.

 

Ford told dealers they would hold retail allocation open through June. So it sounds like in July, dealers will be on a contolled allocation, heavily weighted to the "high hybrid" markets (mainly the coasts.) Retail orders then will have to compete with stock orders and fleet/government orders for scheduling. A fleet or dealer stock order gets priority (if they have allocation for that month) over a retail order from a dealer that does not have allocation until later in the model year.

 

If you are seriously considering ordering a Fusion or Milan Hybrid, I suggest you try to do it in June because you will likely get it sooner, especially if you live in the heartland, rather than the bigger hybrid markets.

 

After June, you can still qualify for the $1,700 (order before October 1) but you want to make sure your dealer has allocation (and for what months production). After June, 6+ months waits might be common. And a dealer may take two orders knowing they only have allocation for one unit, (but hoping an extra one gets built for them.) If you are order number 2 against an allocation of 1, you may not see your unit built until 6 or more months later.

 

Remember, if you order later in the year and don't take delivery untill sometime in 2010, you still qualify for the tax credits ($1,700 if you order by September 30 and $850 after that) but you have to wait until 2011 to claim the credit against your 2010 taxes. Orders by the end of June should be on the 8-9 week cycle for delivery and therefore can be claimed in 2010 against the 2009 taxes.

If you can still claim the tax credit, even though you fall into the AMT trap, that is great news. I'm sure we will see more about it next January as people start to do their 2009 taxes.

 

I hope they make it easier to understand on the 8910 form and instructions for the 2009 tax year.

Don't you love how ford makes one of the best hybrids around and decides to make only 25,000 of them. Godda love that thinking!

If you can find them a source for more batteries they'd be more than happy to make more than 25,000. They're battery constrained right now. Toyota has cornered the battery market up until now. Having U.S. based battery makers will help a lot.

Humm seems like there's a difference of opinion on this:

 

"The blogosphere quaked yesterday with the news of a possible battery supply shortage for next year's line of hybrids at Ford. Both hybridcars.com and autobloggreen.com reported that in an online chat with employees, Ford Americas President Mark Fields had said that "We are constrained by the amount of components, including batteries, that the supply base can provide us."

 

Does this signal a supply-chain issue for hybrids next year? Not so, says Ford's Alan Hall. "We have planned to double our volume with the addition of our new hybrids, the Fusion and Milan, joining the Escape and Mariner. If customer demand requires more, we will work with our supplier partners to meet the demand."

 

On Each Hybrid model ford has never made more than 25,000 a year, that's why we are still getting the tax rebate btw.

Guess I cant complain too much they have sold a total of 71,494 hybrids as march 2009, while honda sold 101,599 as of 1/01/08 and Toyota 404,606 as 9/30/07 (Government does not have sales records after the tax credits started phasing out)

 

At least there might be a bright spot with the recession, hope it will kick the car companies to work on more energy efficient vehicles and also try to SELL them.

Humm seems like there's a difference of opinion on this:

 

Ford contracted to buy enough batteries for 25,000 Fulans. Saying you will "work with suppliers to get more" is fine and dandy but that doesn't mean there is actually more to be had. That's just marketing speak. The tax credits are gone after this year anyway so there's no reason for Ford to hold back if the demand is there and they are able to get more batteries. Of course they will also be sure not to overload the market.

 

But it's not like they can just run down to all the local Radio Shacks or NTBs and buy extra batteries. There is a supply constraint.

I'm seeing signs that JCI (Johnson Controls) is tooling up "hybrid" batteries for Ford and they plan to produce 100,000 or more hybrids next year. I think JCI got some "Stimulus" money to prompt the manufacturing capability.

 

As gas prices are rising for the summer, at least around here, there will be renewed interest in the Hybrids. I hope those that are interested get their orders in by the end of the month.
