6 cd changer problems

Hello fellow Fusion owners!

 

I'm just poking around here looking for some advice. I purchased my 2006 ford fusion in August of 06 and have had no problems with it. Recently my in dash 6 cd changer has been experiencing errors when I try to eject or change the cd. It acts like it's going to work then after a few minutes I get an error on the screen saying either 'eject error' or 'cd error' Now it's to the point that I cannot remove my cd or play it. I called a dealership in the area(not where I bought it, they have closed) and asked them about it. They said they only take out the disc changer and send it off and give you a replacement to the tune of $300 to $400. I was just wondering if anyone else has had these problems and what they did to fix it. I was also wondering if there were any recalls on the stereo. My car has about 56,500 miles on it so it is outside of the factory warranty and this problem didn't start until after that warranty is up.

Hi beatlefreak. :D Unfortunately, the Dealership you spoke to was telling the truth. Essentially, when there is a problem with the Audio system Head Unit/Changer, they remove the old one and simply replace it with a refurbished one. The defective one is sent off to a Ford Certified Electronic Repair Facility, where it will be refurbished and reinstalled in another Fusion in the future. The Dealer does not attempt to repair it (they are not equipped to).

 

There are no "Recalls" on the CD Changer.

 

Since you are out of Warranty (due to mileage), your options are limited. Here are a few:

 

1 - You can pay the Dealership to replace it with another stock unit (check around with other Dealers for the best pricing).

2 - You can also find a good Audio Repair Shop and see if they can repair the CD Changer.

3 - You can go aftermarket and replace the entire unit. You would probably be able to replace the unit for less than $300-400.

My friend has the same 6 disc cd player in his focus and he had the same problem. So i went searching around for more info on the subject. In the owners manual in the glove box under the Audio section it mentions about using burnt or copied cd's messing up the cd player because of the disc size or width.

I saw that in my owners manual too and have not used burnt/copied discs in the player.

Hi beatlesfreak. :D Sorry if my previous post was a little confusing. I will try to answer your questions in order:

 

1 - You will get a refurbished unit, no matter what. Replacement units will be refurbished, not new.

2 - When you say "aftermarket part", what do you mean? If you go aftermarket, you will be replacing the entire Receiver/CD Changer head unit. You can find a lot of good information concerning aftermarket units that will fit in your particular vehicle by going to LINK: Crutchfield Electronics You do not have to purchase from them, but you can use their online tools to research which particular units will fit your Fusion with no modifications necessary. If you should decide to purchase from them, they provide all of the necessary wiring harnesses and connectors to install the new head unit, along with detailed removal and installation instructions. Their phone support is also very good, so you can also call them with any questions you have.

But as I stated, you do not have to purchase from them and can still use their online tools to find out what fits in your car. Then you can price shop elsewhere. I can tell you that I have used Crutchfield in the past. Their prices are not the lowest, but are reasonable. However, in my opinion their customer support (lifetime) and great reputation more than make up for any price differences.

You can also go to any major Electronics Retailer (Best Buy etc), any local Car Stereo Installation Shop, any other online Electronics Equipment seller, etc etc..

3 - You can simply make a Service Appointment, bring the car in to the Service Department and have them remove the malfunctioning unit. Then you would take your car until the new head unit arrives. The Dealer will then call you when the new unit arrives, you will make an appointment and bring your car back in to have it installed.

You could also simply remove the unit yourself and bring it in to the Dealers Service Department. However, considering the fact that you are new at this, you may want to let them do it.

4 - You let the Service Department know that you have a CD in the unit, and that you need it back. If they have the ability, they may open it to get out the CD. If not, be sure they notify the Repair Facility that they need to return your CD with the replacement unit. Have it noted on your Repair Order that there was a CD in the old unit, and that it is to be returned with the replacement unit.

He said that it happens a lot with the '06 and he's done it to a few and the owner never had any other problems to his knowledge. This will only cost me $50 so I think it's worth a shot, what do you think?
