Which replacement years are compatible? 2013 Fusion Energi

Recommended Posts

Quick question. I recently picked up a 2013 Fusion Energi that is over 100K, so outside of warranty. No transmission issues at this time.  No noises, etc. so hopefully it’s fine for a long time, but I know the reality is it may need a transmission at some point and no way I’m paying full price for a new one. I love the car so far. It has every option except cooled seats. The last time I had this many toys was in a BMW but my god it took a full time job just to keep up with how fast toys broke on that thing.

So, I’m curious what vehicle model year used transmissions would be compatible with this vehicle? Would a 2015 or 2016 Fusion Energi transmission work in a 2013?  What about a 2015-2016 c-max energi? The 2013/2014 pull outs are hard to come by, for obvious reasons. 2015-2016 Energi transmissions are

easier to find and cheaper and have lower miles, so that would be a better option, if it is an option at all.

I’ve looked up the current part number for a 2016 Energi transmission and it says it will fit a 2013 as well, so that gives me some hope it would work.  However, I don’t know for sure whether a used one would also work or if there were changes to commonize them at some point that makes the original 2015/2016’s not compatible with 2013/2014 model years.

No responses, boo. I believe any Energi models from 13 to 16 are compatible but don't have proof yet.

Well, if anyone is crazy enough to ever do the swap DIY... here are the instructions. Took me a while to find them so I thought I'd share.

Sorry for the delayed response!

I too am on the hunt to match part numbers with our no longer supported 2013 FF models (mine being the Hybrid).

Were you able to make the 16' FFE Transmission swap work?  And if so, what was the model number used?  Been trying to narrow down the year range and model type (standard or hybrid/energi) that are compatible with my FFH for online purchase but most people on here didn't post that info since it was replaced under warranty.

Appreciate you answering questions and pointing me in the right direction!

Have you guys asked a Service Advicor or a Parts Department rep at a dealer about this?  No charge for their info you know.

As for the tranny, I would think a 2013+ Energi as donor would be good, however I'm at an age where I let the mechanics do it.  I worked my own cars enough thru the years.

I’ve been able to find out the replacement part number on the 2013 and 2016 are the same, so I feel pretty confident a used one from a 2016 will work in a 2013/2014.

The regular hybrid and energi versions are NOT interchangeable. If you have an energi then the transmission has to come from an energi if you’re going used. Energi’s have an electric oil pump and one of the motors is bigger.

Thank you both for responding to my message!

I will certainly reach out to a Service Center Rep/Advisor before finalizing any online purchases! I guess I just thought they would withhold that information since I'm not looking to have them do the repair/installation.

@Ncsugrad2002 Thanks for doing the hardwork lol. As mentioned above, I have the Hybrid model and I wanted as much information as possible since online listings (eBay, etc.) note that 15' and 16' Hybrid Transmissions don't match up to work on my 13' FFH.  For the most part, I assumed it was just eBay listers covering their tail since retrofitting a newer transmission can be questionable.

I've also been trying to expand my search options by seeing if the MKZ and C-Max Hybrids utilize the same transmission (since parts are becoming harder to find).

I’m about 99% sure that is correct. I’m confident enough to try it myself if I ever have to replace mine... I’m sure I will at some point.

Oh, the c-max hybrid ones are compatible as well FYI. That might give you something else to search for if you’re looking for a used one.

I think this was covered here in some other topics, but just want to reply to this that a 2016 FFH eCVT will work in a 2013.  The key is to have the VIN of the donor car and check to make sure the transmission part numbers are the same, which I believe is JM5Z-7000-ARM.

I get different part numbers between 2013-2014, early 2015 compared to a 2016. Also, the hybrids and enegi have different gear ratios.

My experience with my 2014 hybrid is that I had a very small fluid seepage at the transmission case, I did not have any noise issues.

Ford has a TSB on the leak for failed silicone gasket. They also have a TSB on the transmission noise. Both TSB's are for 2013, 2014 and early 2015 model years.

While my car was still covered by Fords ESP warranty, I had both TSB's done by a friend who works at a dealer.

Things I noticed:  when the transmission case was apart, the silicone sealer was stuck to only 1 side of the case, which explains why I had a fluid leak, the silicone did not stick properly. The fluid inside was clean and bright red. I change the fluid every 2 years.

I did not have any noise or internal bearing wear, but I had the update TSB kit for the noise installed while it was apart. The kit includes some tapered roller bearings, shims, transfer gear and the case end cover. I also had the filter replaced while it was apart. The instructions in the kit says it updates the 2013, 2014, 2015 transmissions to a 2016 level. If anybody's interested in kits instructions, I can scan it and upload it later.

From my research, Ford changed the bearing setup instructions in the service manual. Seems like the early instructions  have the bearings set up too tight and the revised instructions have the bearings set up with more play, so they are not as tight. I'm thinking the tight bearings were the root cause the early transmission failures because the 2016 and later transmissions seem to be ok.

Ford owners manual says the trans fluid should be changed at 150,000 miles. I have been changing mine every 2 years. Its only about 5 quarts and the cost is minimal if you do it yourself. There is an easier way to do it than following the service manual instructions.

I have a 2013 FFH with a bad transmission 142000 miles. While searching for info I came across this forum, I would like to add some info to the transmission swap. I did it on jack stands and it's easier than you would think. Follow the Ford service manual to the tee and take your time.

2013 transmission

Doner transmission

2017 MKZ build date 9/16

The transmission is nothing more than a gearbox controlled by the TCM. I was told as long as the drive ratios are the same I should have no problems.

The trans swap was successful.

Parts I would recommend changing are

Transmission damper

TCM/Transmission cooler

Hope this helps.

I would just do a transmission fluid change.

If the transmission I as good as a 2017, you won't need a new one, as long as you do the 100k mile transmission fluid changes (wih the ford certified fluid).

Don't skimp on cheaper oil. It's not worth the headaches.
