Deceleration is different

Recommended Posts

As the title states all of a sudden the deceleration is different than when i first got the car. It is a 2019 Fusion Hybrid. At first it would slow down alot once i took my foot off the accelerator pedal. Now when i take my foot off the pedal it barely slows down and hesitates to go into regen mode. no codes have shown up but the car is driving differently and it only had 28k miles i got it with 25k. My dad did borrow the car and im not sure if he did something with it that made it learn something new.

Assuming a 2019 works the same as my 2013 there is no regen when you take your foot off of the accelerator pedal UNLESS the gear selector is in the L position.  If it is in the D position regen begins when you put your foot on the brake pedal.  The friction brakes do not engage at that point.  The pedal has to be pushed a significant amount before the friction brakes take over.

L is not a gear.  The car doesn't have any gears.  It also doesn't have a traditional starter motor or an alternator.

In my 2015 FFH, lifting my foot off the accelerator pedal does provide regen charging.

If you have a OBDII  tester like ScangaugeII, it will show regen charging when you let off the gas peddle. If you put the trans in L increases the regen by about one and a half times.

Do you have the trans in L?

Eco mode turned off?

My '20 goes into regen mode as soon as I take my foot off the pedal.  As I recall, both my '15 and '17 also did that.

@billford - eco mode is immaterial in this as I've used both and regen activates when foot off the gas.

FWIW, I'm still having issues with EV => ICE changeover.  I have to toggle speed control to get EV working when it should.

No it was not in L the eco mode was off cuz my dad was pushing buttons put the eco mode back on and it was regenerating like it was before but it still hesitates to go into electric

I wonder if this is a learned response to EV,  You could disconnect the 12v battery and reconnect so it would have to learn all over again. Not sure it would solve the problem, If you could only disconnect the ECM you wouldn't loose your saved settings.

Mine 2019 Fusion SE Hybrid goes into regen mode as soon as I stop accelerating, it regens while coasting or braking.

One of the things changed in eco mode is deceleration regen.

How so?  My 20 - in Eco mode - regens as soon as I lift my foot.  Normal mode as well.  As I recall, my '17 was same way.

My 2013 Energi only regens when the brake pedal is depressed, UNLESS, the shifter is in the L position.  Then the accelerator pedal works the same as my Tesla.  That is: With foot off of pedal there is max regen.  As the pedal is pushed the regen is reduced until a point is reached where there is no regen and no acceleration.  It took a long time for my muscle memory to learn where that point is.  Continued pressure on the pedal begins acceleration.

There's regen on my 2014 when I take my foot off the accelerator pedal.  Your 2019 has that "Eco" button correct?  Perhaps you had that on before and it is not on now?

Hi Paul.  Can you link me or quote me the X-gauge codes to enter into the scangauge that show regeneration charging?  Thanks

That's interesting Murphy. So does it feel like there is a lot of "engine braking" as soon as you let off the pedal?  I recall when I drove bmws and mercedes for work they'd have huge engine braking which felt really odd at the time.

It feels like engine braking.  It is not severe because the HVB can't accept enough current to provide a lot of braking.

The Energi has a 7.6 kWh battery.  The Tesla has a 90 kWh battery.  It can handle way more current from regen.

Same with my 2014 FFH. As soon as I lift my foot off the accelerator, the battery icon shows the 'up' arrow indicating that it's charging.

On my 2019, eco mode provides some regen with foot off throttle, and uses about 5-10% of throttle input space for that regen.

With eco mode off, the regen is very weak, and mostly like an ice car coasting to a stop.

The regen applied to eco mode is perhaps like downshifting a gear on an ice car.

It is not maxed out, as you can still press the brake and get additional regen.

I think they did it, because brake lights don't come on when throttle is released.
