Hood Insulator

As far as fire retardant, can't see how a thin piece of fiberglass will help, if the engine is aflame.

Having been through two engine fires that totaled the cars, this is true.

 

If you want the insulation because you think it will dampen noise, or even if you just think it should be there and would make you feel better, go for it.

 

Fire retardant, pfft. (Pfft being a technical term for I don't think so.) Car fires are wicked. Melt your tires, melt your headlamps, blow through the "firewall", melt the whole dash, vaporize anything not metal. Seating becomes frames and springs. Smells really bad too.

I just pickup a 2019 Fusion Energi it does not have Hood Insulator, or the 2 strips between the inside fenders and hood.

I think the insulators in the doors is also missing. I have a 2018 Fusion hybrid loner siting next to the Energi and when you close the doors on the 2018 you get a thud, on

the 2019 you get a tin can sound.

 

Also missing for the 2019,120v power outlet, and the Active Park Assist. In the Owner's Manual it says to press button for Active Park Assist but no button.

 

Ford is cutting cost. I wonder what the 2020 will be like.

It is the rear door that do not have insulators and there is more road and engine noise in the 2019 Fusion Energi than 2018 Fusion hybrid.

 

We pay a lot for these car's. Ford I am disappointed with how you are treating customers this is my 10 ford it may be my last.

To be fair, when you compare the prices of the 2018 and the 2019, you'll see that the 2019 is quite a bit cheaper. Ford has eliminated most of the options for 2019 and just made the things people were ordering standard. They were not ordering the park assist system, so they simply removed it as an option. If you had bought the same Fusion as a 2018 model you would have paid over $1000 more. You could use that $1000 and add back in the stuff that's missing and you'd still have saved money, so not sure why you think Ford is treating customers poorly when you are paying less.

 

Incidentally despite how much you think you have paid, it still isn't enough for Ford to actually make a profit on your purchase.

The price difference between my '17 that does not have moonroof or nav but does have everything else ... and a similarly equipped '19 SEL is about $2000. Comparing my window sticker to Ford.com build pages - sans incentives. I'm still debating on a '20 SEL but 2 issues are nagging me - thanks to this forum:

1. hood insulator. Does it exist on the '19 or not? We've had differing views on that and I'll find out this coming weekend. The dealer has a '19 FFH on the lot and I'll look.

 

2. Someone mentioned lack of SOC info on the '19. I want to see if it is there or not and I'll use the same FFH at the dealer to determine that. I think that's one of the things in left screen --> information or something. <shrug>

I went to my parts department and explained the discussion here. This is what I learned:

 

We are all correct!

 

The insulator - or hood blanket as I call it - may or may not be on your car. The way to find out if it should be is take your VIN to your dealer parts folks. Have them look up the part individually so they have a part number in hand. Then get a Bill of Materials (BOM) for your car and have them quickly search that for the insulator part#.

 

If the BOM has it listed - and your car does not have one, head for service to set up an appointment to get one installed. The lack of one when you should have it is a factory defect.

 

If the BOM does not have it - then for some reason your car is not supposed to have it. In this case, the insulator and the clips for it can be purchased as a kit for about $165 plus tax. Have service install it or DIY in the driveway.

 

Parts.ford.com is inaccurate in many linkages between parts and cars. If you are unsure, see your parts folks at the dealer. If you look back in this thread, you will find I did a VIN search of my car and was told the part is not in it - but it is and I can prove it. <shrug>

That's stupid IMO. What the hell is the harm seeing as how the car is being torpedoed after '20 MY? <shakes head> Sometimes it just astounds me the moves companies make. But I still stand by what my parts folks said ... if you want one and don't have it (or aren't supposed to have it) then get the kit and install it yourself.

 

BTW ... I read somewhere that GM is planning on killing off MAlibu and Camaro possibly by '24. That'll make them just like Ford - 'Vette, SUVs and trucks.

It is now illegal to remove/modify engine sound control components, so Ford would have had to re-certify the car to make that change.

Those laws only refer to exhaust components, or basically stuff that you hear when the car drives past you. The hood insulator does not affect the pass-by test so no re-certification is needed. Pass-by test laws have been in place for decades, nothing new.

EMISSION LAW

 

Tampering With a Noise Control System

 

Federal laws prohibit the following acts:

Removal or rendering inoperative by

any person other than for purposes of

maintenance.

Repair or replacement of any device or

element of the design incorporated into

a new vehicle for the purpose of noise

control prior to its sale or delivery to

the ultimate purchaser or while it is in

use.

The use of the vehicle after any person

removes or renders inoperative any

device or element of the design.

 

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency

may presume to constitute tampering as follows:

Removal of hood blanket, fender apron

absorbers, fender apron barriers,

underbody noise shields or acoustically

absorptive material.

Tampering or rendering inoperative the

engine speed governor, to allow engine

speed to exceed manufacturer

specifications.

Much late on response. Been a hectic few weeks. Let's take a look at all this ... first bullet under Federal Law section

Tell this to Ford ... they removed/rendered inoperative a sound deadening/control device, aka hood blanket. Now, EPA bullet #1 ...

Removal of hood blanket, fender apron

absorbers, fender apron barriers,

underbody noise shields or acoustically

absorptive material.

 

Same thing ... tell this to Ford. They removed the hood insulator. I bet they didn't get recertification that I believe would be warranted in this situation. As for the part delete order posted earlier, without a recert, the delete is invalid.

 

In all instances where the hood insulator is not on the vehicle the owner may purchase said item through the Parts Department of their favorite Ford dealership. The cost according to mine is approximately $165 plus tax including the clips. And there is nothing preventing that sale.

Or much more likely they certified it without the insulator in the first place. Maybe they were selling fleet hybrids without them all along.

I would think fleet and non-fleet units would be the same in this regard. If they were different, then either fleet units or non-fleet units were in violation of the certification. Can't have it both ways as far as I know. <shrug>

Sure you can. If you certify without a noise reduction device, you can easily add one without re-certification.

 

On the new Explorer you don't get an insulator on the XLT, but you do get one on the Platinum. Same thing with the Expedition I think.

Wow this company is getting disturbingly cheap. I wouldn't be surprised if you're missing an airbag or two. Never *ever* buying a ford again, mines had over 12 separate quality related issues. Already starting to rust, it's a 2015... My friends Lexus from 2011 doesn't have a spec of rust, or his mom's Toyota Prius from 2005. I hope this company puts them selves out of business when people realize even the newer cars are not getting better. I like supporting my own country but this is too much. I don't think the Japanese would ever remove something that made the car quieter and cost $17 to produce (and was already on every model year before it).

I looked it up for my 20 and the numbers provided in this thread and it says that it does not fit my car. Does it say that because my year didn't have one? Has anyone actually ordered one and installed it?

I replied to your other post ... I swapped the one from my '17 into the '20 with no issues.  Don't believe the "doesn't fit" crap.

I believe I am going to oder one. Do you know if the insulator comes with all the plastic clips, or do you have to order those as a separate part?
