Hood Insulator

Recommended Posts

Found there's no hood insulator in 2019 FFH. Is it better to get one to be installed?

Huh. I haven't checked them closely but to me it should be there. I'd ask the dealer how come it isn't. I remember my '15 had one, my current '17 has one.

Thanks for reply.

The earlier ones also had weatherstripping along inside of the hood and the new ones did not.

My 2019 still came with weatherstrip but no insulator.

Did some checking with my brother ...

his '13 FFH SE had insulator

His current '18 FFH Platinum has an insulator

My prior '15 HyTi had an insulator

My current '17 has an insulator

Based on this I would suggest going back to the dealer and looking under the hood of other Fusions on the lot. If they have insulators and yours doesn't, get one added. Should be warranty under the 3/36 bumper-to-bumper.

I'll ask my dealer if I can look at his stock when I'm there next week ... they're 80 miles away. <shrug>

Ford's been working hard on cost cutting, I'm sure this is just another one of the cuts.

No hood insulator on my '19 FFH HyTi but I do have the weatherstripping as mentioned. I would have never guessed this until I looked after I read this post.

Is your hood aluminum or steel? My 2013 is aluminum.

Just checked my 2019 FFH hood and it's aluminum.

There were 2 strips between the inside fenders and hood. Don't see them in your picture.

This is not my car or even a hybrid but the older model hybrids had these 2 weatherstrips

My 2019 also doesn't have these two fender cover. (2019/06 FFH Titanium)

I ended up with buying the hood insulator and fender cover to install by myself.

For the hood insulator, I also found there are two parts number.

HS7Z-16738-A 2017~

DS7Z-16738-A 2013~2016 (much cheaper)
Did Ford change the hood design? If not, maybe can pick up the later one.

I don't know but those part numbers imply they did. The cheaper one is for 2013 to 2016 models. The other one is for 2017 and later models.

My 2019 Titanium FFH has neither the insulator or weatherstripping. While I guess you can buy them and install them yourself, why do you feel they are needed? Especially since Ford doesn't seem to think they are needed?

I believe it provides a better protection.

They are only there for NVH. They don't offer any protection from anything.

Yes, for NVH. Originally, I thought it's better for paint. Maybe I'm wrong.

I double-checked my car as compared to this pic. I have not only the weatherstripping shown here, but the lead edge of the hood also has some - in addition to the insulator. Belt-and-suspenders construction?

My 18 FFH SE also has the insulator, side strips, and one at the leading edge of the hood.

Had myt O2 sensor replaced and was talking with a couple advisors about this. There should be a hood insulator on every Fusion - hybrid or gas. If the original owner discovers there isn't one, it should be ordered and installed at a dealer. Odds are warranty coverage, thus no charge. Not sure on the weatherstripping, tho ... seems to be a mixed bag for that one.

@hphong2003 - head to the dealer and make arrangements to get one. Lack of one is factory defect according to my service folks.

Edit: Forget it. It appears Ford deleted that part from '19+ models. See following posts.

The service folks would not know that Ford had deleted a part like that. Unless they go to the trouble of looking up the actual Bill of Material for your individual car, they are just guessing.

Good point and one I hadn't considered. <dopeslaps self>

I went to official Ford Parts web site and for my 2019 FFH Titanium VIN there is no hood insulator or weather stripping available.

https://parts.ford.com/en/us/resources/ford-parts

Older models FFH offer it but not 2019.

This confirms what Waldo said. <shakes head> For me, that's a deal-breaker. That piece is partially fire retardant, deadens noise from the engines and helps hold heat in when it's cold out. I live in a snowbelt and will not accept a car without one.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Then again, not putting one in justifies the $2000 price difference between my car and the new ones (cheaper) I guess.

I believe my 2010 FFH had the insulator. I cannot hear any difference in the cabin between it and my 2019. Both are/were extremely quiet.

As far as fire retardant, can't see how a thin piece of fiberglass will help, if the engine is aflame. And while it may hold heat in the cold it also will hold heat during the summer months. Kind of a double edge sword.

My 2010 lasted a bit over 9.5 years and until the battery fiasco I had no issues. I expect to keep my 2019 for about 10 years too. But you have a 2017 so if the vehicle is running well why would you get a 2020?

Okay, all you parts catalog guys ... help me out here.

I went looking for that insulation mat/pad or whatever in parts.ford.com. I found it in the diagram for Body ==> Other body parts - front ==> page 2, part 16071 (insulator). The mat part is in the upper left of the diagram and if I read the call-out tag (yellow square) correctly, the mat is part 16746. Entering that into the part# search box returns - this part does not fit your vehicle.

What did I do wrong? I searched initially by VIN. I also have searched by year/make/model - 2017/Ford/Fusion. I get the same results. I looked in Body ==> Hoods and found part with 16738 diagram showing the same call-out (yellow square) with 16746 as the part number..

So why does it tell me 16746 is not for my car when (if my call-out reading is good) my car has that part installed on the hood?
