Two trips MPG pump fills

Recommended Posts

2017 SE with 18k miles on the odometer.

Trip 1: 340 miles @ 45.4 mpg

Trip 2: 210 miles @ 50.8 mpg

Trip 3: 340 miles @ 40.7 mpg

weighted avg for 3 trips ≈ 44.9 mpg.

I should have noted the display average. I may have pictures of average; I'll have to look and edit post if I do.

What kind of driving was Trip 2? The only times I gotten over 50 mpg is when driving on back roads about 45 mph.

Both sets are from my daily commute: about 106 (I call it 110 for easy calculation purposes) miles round trip (a couple of variations available). Takes about 1.5 hours on average each way, so that comes out to about 34 mph. A few 1 - 10 mph stretches, a few 10 - 20 mph sections, and some 65 - 70 mph stretches.

Before purchasing, I was figuring I'd be in the "sweet spot" of the hybrid.

With the prior '15 HyTi I had mostly mid to high-40s but had one 52+ MPG tank. All the driving was normal (for me) running around. I think weather, road and traffic conditions have a lot to do with it.

Yes, I would say you are in the sweet spot. Not sure all buyers have been aware that such a thing exists. Congrats!

I had a 2013 FFH SE, put 80,000 miles on it before trading it in for a 2017 FFH Platinum. My '13 had a high tankful of 52mpg, overall was 44mpg. The '17 isn't doing quite as well - my highest mpg to date has been 44mpg, overall is only 42mpg. My current tankful is only at 38, which is one of the lowest I've ever gotten.

I just got My '17 fusion hybrid and it seems to get really bad gas mileage on a 1.8 mile trip it says i got 11mpg on the screen that pops up when you turn off the car. We got this car for the reported 44mpg in city and my overall average mpg is 30.5 after 400 miles is there something wrong with it?

Displayed mpg on a 1.8 mile trip means nothing. Your 30.5 mpg after 400 miles might or might not mean something is wrong. What type of driving was that in what kind of weather?

Are you having cold, snowy, windy weather in Oswego, NY? If so, that's the reason.

yes it is cold, so the performance will improve with warmer weather?

You and I are in the same city!!! Nice! To answer your question, yes. Cold temps take the HVB out of its optimum operating range. Also, the ICE is running more to maintain its operating temps. Generally I drive like I stole it and don't get a ton of high-MPG receipts but I'm reasonably happy with the results. Use of any tread than LRR will also contribute to lower MPG - no mater the season.

You and I should get together sometime and compare notes on our cars. I've added a few things (see sig) and you might be interested in them when/if you see the setup. Usually I am at Dahls Diner out by Rte 29 somewhere around 8 AM if you wanna get together.

FYI for casual readers: Oswego is a small burg and I have seen only one other hybrid Fusion in the last 2+ years .... and that was a '14. Plenty of gas models, but damn few hybrids or Energis.

Also keep in mind that all EPA testing is done with around 4000 miles of break-in. So until you get at least that much, you can't really come to any conclusions about fuel economy.

That's a short trip. If you put on the climate control for heat, the ICE will fire up just to generate heat, even if your HVB is full. That will seriously waste fuel, and you are unlikely to get warm before the end of your trip.

If your 400 miles is 20x 1.8 mile trips with the heat on, I am not surprised. I would expect a non hybrid car to do much worse.

Our 2013 is averaging 44.5 at 70k miles.

With such short trips, the computer might be getting silly too. Check your mileage when you pump gas.

I just got my 2017 Fusion hybrid, and I must say the MPG is better than I expected. After renting one on Maui for 2 weeks, going 600 miles on 12.5 gallons of gas I needed one of these. 2 weeks after I got home I bought one with 17,000 miles on it. I am saving 250$ a month on gas versus the Toyota tundra I was driving everyday, a 60 mile round trip commute. So far here are my results.

trip 1= 540 miles. 10.5 gallons of gas= 51.4 MPG

trip 2= 499 miles. 10.0 gallons of gas= 49.9 MPG

EV miles seem to averaging around 57%

I am extremely happy with this car so far

I traded my 15 FFH for the 17 FFH with approx 13,000 miles on the odometer. Fuel economy average was 50.2 mpg.

My 17 FFH with 15,000. Lies on the odometer has a fuel economy average of 48.7 mpg.

I commute every day from QUANTICO, V to downtown Washington, DC. In the Summer, I routinely get from 54-59 MPG — sometimes higher. In colder weather or short trips, the mileage drops significantly. One trick is that I do not use the AC in Summer unless I really need it. My commute is up I9/395.

My wife and son get 42 mpg, but use the AC regularly and drive short trips.

Hi everybody, I just found this forum and find it fascinating.

In June I purchased a 2017 FFH Platinum Energi (plug-in hybrid). It had just under 10k on the odometer, and I paid just over half of what the original purchaser did, so I feel I got an exceptional deal. The car has been very interesting to get used to, and there are lots of things that this old gearhead is still learning (this is a far cry from my 1990 Miata, 2000 Suburban, and 2002 E320 Mercedes).

Since June, I've put 8K on the car (100 mile daily commute). I plug it in every night, and have been seeing just over 52 mpg so far.

What is interesting, and I'd like to know if anybody else has seen this, is a 2 mpg improvement using 91 octane fuel over the 87 octane. I used regular for the first 4k miles or so, and was getting right around 50 mpg (49.8 - 50.2). With no difference in the weather or driving habits, it is now 52.0 - 52.9. I understand how this is possible, just wondering if anybody else has tried or seen this. I've yet to do a cost / benefit analysis on this to see if it's worth it.

I've yet to use some of the features that I know about, and I suspect there are still a few things that I'm unaware of, but the car has been flawless so far. I love the adaptive cruise control, and use it constantly. In fact, the most active part of my drive is using the + and - button on the cruise to meet the various speed limits on the commute. I've used the lane minder a few times, but for the most part haven't found where it's particularly helpful. I've yet to try the parking assist.

Anyway, glad to be here, and hope to talk to many of you as I read about these cars, and experience mine.

Jeff

You will find more information about your car in the Energi forum.

Mine is a local driving car. I bring the gas tank up to the 1/4 point once a year.

This was discussed a few years ago. Yes, the car does get slightly better mileage with premium. Most people calculated that the difference in price did not make it worth the purchase.

I disagree. It gets better mileage because it is able to advance the timing more, which makes the engine happier and more efficient. I always put premium in mine.
