Car Computed MPG vs Actual MPG

I have a 2015 FFH Titanium. It seems that this IS a 2015 issue and not an 'S' issue I don't have a gallons used on the Trip 1 Display. Sorry about the shaky photos... I just rolled out of bed to take these. Second image is the Trip 1 display, first image is hitting the right button for the 'options' which as you can see is only the help.

That really stinks that they removed the gallons from the 2015. Ford is really screwing up these cars!!

I just found and started using the Enhanced Trip 1 on my '14 and find it very useful. Why would they remove it from newer models?

There was another thread where this was discussed. I suspect (speculation) Ford received complaints that the gallons used on the trip displays, the MPG figure on the trip displays, the DTE figure, the fuel gauge graphic, and the amount of gallons actually pumped into the gas tank from the fuel pump were frequently inconsistent. It would appear Ford decided part of the solution was to remove the gallons used info from the trip displays.

 

Some owners like as much information as possible, others are overwhelmed by it, and others may complain strongly if the numerous metrics are inconsistent. Ford is damed if they do and damed if they don't.

As long as - when my car gets to me - I have the ability to have at least 1 trip meter AND the ability to reset it, the gallons used and other stuff will sort it out. I always calculate my MPG tank to tank off the sales receipt/pump. I worked in IT for 40+ years and learned one fact ... I don't trust computers.

I think you should be happy. Trip 1 and Trip 2 can be easily reset anytime you like. I use Trip 2 for long trips and rarely reset it. I reset trip 1 each time I fill the tank. You also "sort of" have a third trip that you can reset anytime you wish that is connected to the Empower/Engage displays. It will show you your MPG. I reset my Empower MPG/trip more or less on a daily basis. It shows me how I did for the day's errrands.

During my last fill up I saw something interesting with the car computed mileage and indicated fuel usage. On Trip 1 I had driven about 550 miles and the fuel use was shown as about 10 gal and the mileage was shown as about 50 mpg. I didn't notice the discrepancy (550 mi / 10 gal should have been shown as 55 mpg) until I filled up. At that point I was surprised (negatively) the actual fuel used was 11 gal. But then realized that even though the actual gallons used differed from car computed gallons used that the mileage shown was pretty accurate (550 /11 = 50 mpg). So the car computed stats weren't perfect this time but hopefully this was an anomaly. I still think they can be useful especially if correct more times than not.

Not that I don't believe you, but I'm struggling with that one. I don't believe that the MPG would be determined independently of the two metrics (distance and fuel used). Did you snap a pic? Because, you know what they say.... ;)

I know it was odd. It was just my 2nd fill up with the Enhanced Mode turned on and I wasn't aware of how the trip display values are determined. I do know from memory (no picture was taken) that the mileage was 554.6, the gal shown was 9.95 and the MPG was 50.6.

 

The amount of gas I actually put in was 11.24 gal. And I thought at the time that I was going to be far under the 50.6 average the display had shown. But when I got home and did the math I saw I was only slightly under. Perhaps the car display should have been 10.95 gal? That would match the 50.6 average it was showing. At any rate I'll keep a closer eye on it.

I think this illustrates part of the reason why Ford removed all information regarding fuel usage from the displays for the 2015+ FFHs.

I've never noted such a discrepancy in either of our cars. I think the more likely reason is related to people complaining about the discrepancy between the gallons reported used by the car and the amount shown on the pump to replace said amount.

I can verify that my 2015 does not have any advanced trip setting either ;(

It wouldn't really bother me to not have the fuel used amount on the Trip 1 gauge, since I use the pump fuel amount for all of my calculations. And the amount of fuel used on the Trip 1 gauge is basically just an estimate anyways.
