Four Sync reboots during my 9.5 hour trip today...

Recommended Posts

Didn't one of the articles about Sync 3 say that this feature is coming to Sync 3?

Yes Sync 3 will have that feature, it will even update itself without any prompting from the owner if they want, so this whole argument will be a moot point in the future anyway.

I got no problem with THAT but we are/were talking about the current system that makes ME go and LOOK for updates occasionally and then install them myself with a time consuming process of: web site to computer; computer to thumb drive; thumb drive to car; 30 minutes to update; report completion back to web site. It is not a user friendly process.

And with this happening to millions of vehicles, I would be really surprised if a few of them didn't end in disasters.

I do have a concern about the Sync 3 updates. It may be very unlikely, but allowing an update without any prompting may open the door to hackers. I may be overly sensitive to this, because when I look at the dash on my FFH Ti I see the Sony logo.

I want to be able to refuse to take an update until I see that it has been out and reviewed for a while, and I want to choose the timing and source of the code. Just look at some of the headaches the OS updates created for iPhone users.

Updates are never required, if you don't want them, you don't have to take them. If you have a problem, then you have a choice of going to the dealer or trying the update yourself. Despite the time consuming process you refer to, it's still faster than going to the dealer.

If you're ever in an accident - and I hope you aren't - just blame it on NK hackers... Honest, officer, Kim Jong what's-his-name is behind this!

Officer, I was startled when the film The Mouse that Roared came up on my nav screen and then a tree jumped in front of me.

Ok. It cant happen...but the dealer DID brick my Sync this morning. They then proceeded to give it to me like I wouldnt notice.

Nothing on the screens worked at all. Touching the info spot turned on the climate system, touching pair phone did nothing, etc. I cant imagine doing work that bad and hoping the customer wouldnt notice.

I walked back to the service desk and told them nothing worked, and of course they immediately suggested that I was doing it wrong. Finally they said that they would re-load the update. Half an hour later (originally 2 and a half hour job) I was on my way.

One thing they did find was a bad valve somewhere in the fuel system that kept turning on my check engine light. I just kept turning it off because it would happen when I got low on gasoline, so I didnt figure it was a big deal.

Well that's not really the definition of "brick". To brick something in the electronics sense means to somehow get the hardware to some unrecoverable state where the module must be replaced. The brake control modules are fairly susceptible to that, but the Sync stuff can usually be recovered.

Close enough, it was totally unuseable.

"Bricked" means not recoverable by the user but usually recoverable by an experienced person with the appropriate equipment. For example a lan router that had a bad firmware load make it unusable can sometimes be recovered using the Jtag interface directly into the chip controller.

Put out of commission forever is a "doorstop", as in that is all it is good for.
