SSM Chimes, Reprogram

Recommended Posts

Jul 24 2014 5202-2013-2014 Fusion/MKZ Not Equipped With A Sony Radio - Chimes Default To Instrument Cluster

Some 2013-2014 Fusion vehicles built on or before 9/11/2013, and MKZ vehicles built on or before 10/22/2013, that are not equipped with a Sony branded radio may exhibit a concern of chimes intermittently emitting from the instrument cluster instead of the audio system after a cold start. Affected chimes may include parking aid, door ajar, and/or parking brake. To correct the concern, reprogram the Audio Control Module (ACM) to the latest level using IDS version 91.03 or higher. Use applicable 12651D labor operations in section 10 of the SLTS manual.

Thanks for posting this, I have experienced this maybe half a dozen times, next time I am at the dealership I get them to check it out.

Hmm I notice once in a while that my car will do the key in ignition chime once in a while when I open the door, even though its PSB. Strange quirk.

They really need to get a system where they can plug into the car and update everything instead of one at a time. Every time I come in I'm getting tons of software updates and some issues are unknown what to update.

So what's the secret to getting dealers to apply these updates? I noticed this chime issue shortly after I bought my Fusion, and was glad to see there was an update available.

However, the dealer doesn't show much interest in doing the work. I called about it yesterday and said I'd like it checked out while I'm having an oil change done. Then when I show up today to have the work done, the advisor says he's not sure they'll be able to get to it today. I mentioned the SSM, but he doesn't seem to know what an SSM is. "Must be like a TSB?"

In the past, I've tried the other approach of playing ignorant with respect to TSBs or SSMs and just describing the problem because sometimes the advisors seem irritated when you mention TSBs. But that hasn't always worked in the past either. I went to this same dealer for the "one-touch windows keep losing their calibration" software update, and they simply did the one-time recalibration as described in the owner's manual. I had to bring it back a second time to have them apply the software update..

I really wish car manufacturers would make it easy for owners to apply their own updates. We do it with web browsers and computer operating systems, so why not cars?

I agree. My SA likes that I bring him the TSB/SSM numbers that apply. It saves the dealership time/cost when they don't have to research the problem but can just fix it & bill Ford. Often the dealerships cannot get work done in the warranty time allotted by Ford for reimbursement, anything that the customer can do to save the dealership time means more money in the dealers profit. However, some dealers seem to dislike warranty work in general because it pays them less than what they charge people who are out of warranty.

Sync 3 will be the first mainstream auto company to do what tesla does with live updates. From what I've heard so far it will offer to run updates at shutdown and give you a eta to drive again. Don't know if this will be live at the beginning but it is in there. May also only be used for important updates

The one reason dealers dont like doing these updates is because the car sometimes wont play nice with their computers, and a simple update that should take no more than 20 minutes start to finish can run up to 3 hours or more. This is what happened when they tried to run the ambient lighting update in the MKT. I had to bring it back a week later after they had their computers updated, and it still took them 90 minutes to apply the updates because other modules upstream needed updating first.

This is what happened to us which has led to our continued issues with the remote start settings being grayed out. As of now Ford has instructed the dealer to replace the computer because they appear to have bricked it with their failed update.
