iOS 7.1 & iPhone Text Messaging Not Working

Recommended Posts

We recently updated our iPhones to iOS 7.1. It brings some nice features, such as restoring the calendar view option that was present in iOS 6. But it appears to have broken the ability of MFT to read incoming text messages. When opening the phone on MFT and clicking on "Messaging" we now get an error stating that our phone doesn't support bluetooth messaging. I've confirmed that both our phones still have the texting featured turned on for Sync.

Has anyone else experienced this?

Kim - can you check this out please?

Did you re-pair the phone after the update?

Are you asking me or HB?

I for sure didn't do anything.

I didn't re-pair. I guess I will have to delete Sync and repair it after. It isn't just my phone though. My wife's also doesn't work after the update to iOS 7.1. When I was with my dad on Saturday we tested his phone in the Energi and his phone also didn't work for the C-Max to read him the text message.

Hey hybridbear,

I monitor a few different forums and haven't noticed issues with iOS 7.1 being reported about the text messaging feature. Try deleting the phone from MyFord Touch and re-pairing it. Make sure the SHOW NOTIFICATIONS option is switched to ON, like this article states: http://support.ford.com/sync-technology/how-to-allow-ios-text-messaging-sync-myford-touch If the MyFord Touch system still shows that text messaging is not supported, turn the Bluetooth OFF on the MyFord Touch system so the phone disconnects. When you turn the Bluetooth back ON, the phone should automatically connect and text messaging should work.

The first thing I checked was making sure that notifications were still set to "on" on each device. I also tried restarting the phones. I will delete the devices from MFT and then add them again. Would it be best to just do a "reset" on MFT to do this?

hybridbear,

If you perform a master reset, all saved settings will revert back to the default settings. If you don't mind reprogramming your radio presets and navigation settings (if equipped), then a master reset is perfectly fine. Here are the instructions: http://support.ford.com/sync-technology/perform-master-reset-sync-myford-touch

I received your PM and plan to respond shortly. :)

There is another way to reset MFT without loosing all the settings. It's the very first pinned thread in this topic.

This has always worked for me on my iPhone, it might work for other platforms. I copied this from another member's thread some time ago. I wish I documented his or her name so I could give credit. This had to do with the latest MFT upgrade at that time.
My iPhone worked correctly after the latest IOS 7.1 upgrade. But to check things out I unpaired my iPhone and re-connected using this method and it came right back on and I was able to get text to speech messages by clicking on the right OK button.
Pairing iPhone & MFT
"The main things I am stoked about so far is the speed, better navigation destination screens, simplified voice commands for music, and the iPhone compatibility. I can confirm that receiving text messaging does finally work, however sending sadly is still not compatible it appears. The way I got this to work for all you iPhone users out there who have been as frustrated as me is the following steps. Unpair Sync and your iPhone. Turn Bluetooth off on your iPhone and turn off the phone. I also turned off the Fusion at this point and turned off and on MFT to be safe, but this might not have been required. Turn back on your iPhone and MFT and repair the devices. Once your iPhone is paired, go to your Bluetooth settings on the phone and click the blue options arrow on the right side of the "Sync" item. You will see "Show Notifications", flip that to ON. Then turn off MFT and back on again (I believe you just probably need to disconnect and reconnect the phone). Now go to phone on MFT and click messaging, it should finally let you in to the screen. Receiving and reading text messages will work, which includes iMessages".
The only other thing you have to do is go settings, click on text message notifications,

next, click on text to speech and it should work.

I hope this helps.

I guess this was just a temporary glitch. Drove the FFH today for the first time since last weekend and the text messages worked fine today. I didn't do anything special. I'm glad to say that it works now.

Since I first got my FFH, the text messages always said that phone doesn't support bluetooth messaging.

I always assumed it was because SYNC is powered by Microsoft and Apple messages weren't supported. Now I"ll have to try to suggestions above and see what happens. Especially because I just had a problem with my iPhone 5 and Apple just replaced it under Apple Care. I paired it today. I'll try messages tomorrow.

Hi djminfll,

I know I've already posted this link, but I didn't want you to miss it. In order for text messages to come through, you'll need to follow these steps after pairing your new iPhone: http://support.ford.com/sync-technology/how-to-allow-ios-text-messaging-sync-myford-touch

I have a 2013 Explorer with MFT. I just wanted to comment on this thread because someone said they have been monitoring and not seeing any posts about iOS 7.1 and text messaging. I upgraded to iOS 7.1 on my iphone 5 in October 2013. After I did that, the same exact issue with text messaging stop working occurred after working all along. I did master resets, went to the dealer, called Ford. No one can help me out. There is something incredibly wrong with it and I have written this on multiple forums. I never know when I get in my car whether the text messaging will work. Today it worked for the first time in 3 weeks. Most likely it won't work tomorrow. I have given up on it working properly and Ford acknowledging that it doesn't.

If it worked before the upgrade, and not after, why blame MFT? Obviously Apple changed something in how the phone communicates over BT, that will require Ford to now update MFT to fix what Apple broke. Think about what MFT needs to do, work with hundreds of different devices, that constantly change. For the most part it works pretty good. Also a reason I have yet updated my iphone since I got it, it aint broke.

Just in defends for MFT iOS 7.1 and iPhone 4S also works very well.

I'm not quite sure about Cindy's post since iOS 7.1 just came out a few month ago. As long the settings are correct mine has always worked regardless of firmware. The upgrade from iOS 6 to 7 disabled the text to speech feature but that was about it.

For me it also doesn't matter if iMessage or regular text message both work.

Hi Cindy Chyz Casteel,

Let's try all of the troubleshooting steps at once to make sure nothing is missed. Instead of doing a master reset, just delete your phone from MyFord Touch and delete SYNC from the Bluetooth connections of your iPhone. Soft reset your phone by holding the POWER and HOME buttons until the Apple Logo appears. When the phone powers back up, pair the phone to MyFord Touch again:http://support.ford.com/sync-technology/pair-your-phone-sync-myford-touch Once it is paired, tap SETTINGS (on the phone) > BLUETOOTH > SYNC > set SHOW NOTIFICATIONS to ON. This article provides more information: http://support.ford.com/sync-technology/how-to-allow-ios-text-messaging-sync-myford-touch Turn the engine off and open the driver's side door so the MyFord Touch screen turns off. Start the car back up and have someone send you a test text message to see if it goes through. Let me know the outcome.

Thanks for sharing, srogers. I'm happy to hear that! :)

I'm glad the text messaging is working well with your iPhone 4S, corncobs. Do iMessages still come through on your MyFord Touch system? I remember the topic of iMessages being brought up in a different thread, so I apologize if I've asked you already.

Now I get it! I read "For me it also doesn't matter if iMessage or regular text message both work." and thought you meant that only one of those types worked, and it didn't bother you.

Thanks for sharing (and for the clarification)!
