GrySql Report post Posted February 7, 2014 (edited) We've been discussing this new style ICE Air Intake Tube with the funny shaped chamber attached, it was not a part of the early Job 1 FFH's, like mine.Later Job 2 and Energi's had these installed from the factory. The general consensus was that it makes the Atkinson motor quieter, I decided to buy one and find out.I contacted Benny from Levittown Ford on the regular Fusion Forum and had him help me obtain this part, it came this afternoon and I installed it.The total cost was less than $43.00, shipped. The new part fits perfectly as a replacement and it is simple to install, two 7mm bolts and pry off the Air Box end. After the installation I drove a few miles and determined that it makes the car quieter when the ICE is running.Normally the ICE would growl, or moose call, under certain conditions but now at least 1/2 of that ICE noise is gone. Here's the process: Edited July 17, 2015 by hybridbear 9 corncobs, gkinla, Boat Racer and 6 others reacted to this
corncobs Report post Posted February 7, 2014 Thanks GrySql. Sounds like Benny will get busy in the next couple days when everyone orders one of these since the result seems to be worth $43. 3 TomCinMI, GrySql and hybridbear reacted to this
lolder Report post Posted February 7, 2014 Can you run an iPhone app or other sound level device and quantatively measure the difference?
GrySql Report post Posted February 7, 2014 (edited) Can you run an iPhone app or other sound level device and quantatively measure the difference?I am not equipped to do that, therefore my interpretation of "1/2 of the noise" will remain anecdotal. I do not regret my purchase but caution anyone that my experience is mine alone, YMMV. My FFH had a pronounced growl and vibration during certain acceleration points and try as I may I could not get it to do that thing tonight. In fact, I was more than surprised at how little ICE noise I heard during this little 3-4 mile test, normally I'd hear the 'growl' (moose call) when accelerating from a stop sign.Of course when the pedal was fully depressed the ICE was noticeable, but that other obnoxious sound when it was at low speed and moderately accelerating was not present tonight.I will do more testing when next we drive it, but my satisfaction tonight was genuine. BTW, if I am reading that Part # label correctly this part was made on 12/10/13. Look just above the Bar Code on the right, is that a date? corncobs Report post Posted February 7, 2014 (edited) Could be the date yes but could also just be the date the label was printed. Looking at the piece you should be able to find two small circles. One with # 1 - 12 and a little arrow pointing to the month. (I gave seen 12 squares too) The second circle is for the year. In your case you should see 12 & 13. hermans Report post Posted February 7, 2014 (edited) Thanks GrySql for doing the grunt work on this. I eyeballed the air box tube on my MKZh and figured it would fit. I didn't try exchanging the two as it's be brutally cold (as it has been elsewhere) and we are recovering from a very bad ice storm. I was able to place an order this AM. The label also has a revision date of 8/04 in the bottom right hand corner. Edit: I just did some errands this morning and it's definitely quieter, I'm glad I replaced it. I can hear the spot where it used to growl - but it doesn't. Stopped by the dealer this morning and there was a 2014 FFH on the show room floor with the hood popped. I brashly went over and opened the hood, there was the intake with the resonator installed. I ordered one, it will be in next week...$42.19 out the door. 3 GrySql, hybridbear and jeff_h reacted to this

GrySql Report post Posted February 9, 2014 (edited) We just returned from about a 50 mile drive which included freeway, stop and go and country rural driving.I was able to test it in all sorts of different driving scenarios and I can now say conclusively that I believe the ICE sounds from my car are quieter. In addition, Lolder, you wanted a quantitative measure of the difference?I now have one, to wit: My wife mentioned that "whatever you did to the car sure made it quieter".I rest my case. What'cha catch me doing? :redcard: You can find out your build date by going to the Ford ETIS website. Just select vehicle (at top next to "Home") and input your VIN. What'cha catch me doing? :redcard:Please check out your build date in Etis like Steve_B linked above and then post it in this thread: http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/7999-air-intake/page-4? This is the current status: http://fordfusionhybridforum.com/topic/7999-air-intake/?p=74689So, in summary:MKZs3/22/13 is the earliest online to have the resonance chamber (Steve_B) FFEs2/12/13 is the earliest online to have the resonance chamber (Jeff_h) FFHs4/13/13 still doesn't have the resonance chamber (Boat Racer)5/7/13 is the earliest online to have the resonance chamber (our white FFH) Let's keep trying get more build dates and whether or not your car has the chamber to fill in a more complete picture of the data. Especially if your car was built after one of the dates above and is missing the resonance chamber or has the chamber and was built before a date above. 1 GrySql reacted to this
gkinla Report post Posted February 13, 2014 (edited) I installed the new air intake this morning. On first impression, the sound is softer. Don't get that growl when the ICE first kicks in. With the proper tool, 7 mm socket on a speed handle, the install is less than 2 minutes. One can only hope that this changes the resonance in the intake positively and afford better fuel economy. Only time will tell. Thanks GrySql for the proper Ford Part Number. Edited February 13, 2014 by gkinla 2 hybridbear and GrySql reacted to this

We got 11 inches of snow today followed by ice and then 2-4 inches of snow starting in about an hour. UPS chickened out and will not deliver today. Little did they know that my driveway is clean - down to bare blacktop. Afford better fuel economy? This the first I've heard someone say that.
gkinla Report post Posted February 13, 2014 (edited) Afford better fuel economy? This the first I've heard someone say that. It maybe wishful thinking, the newer builds with this resonator seem to have better fuel economy than the older builds. My build date is 11/28/2013. I'm averaging a solid 36 MPG, with at least 75 to 80% city driving in Los Angeles. Edited February 13, 2014 by gkinla

hermans Report post Posted February 14, 2014 Mine arrived this afternoon and I installed it. I drove around the block a couple of times and there is a distinct improvement, even under acceleration. Well worth the money. Much, much quieter. When I get the chance I will drive around the block in the MKZh and see how the FFH now stacks up against the Lincoln. 2 gkinla and GrySql reacted to this
