Side View Mirrors with Convex Glass vs. Blind Spot System

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I have an opportunity to pick up a nice new FFH SE but one option that it is missing is BLIS, Blind Spot detection. The little convex blind spot side mirrors work well during the day but I haven't had a chance to test drive the car at night.

Are there any issues with the side view mirrors at night regarding annoying glare from the headlights of the car behind and beside you? One dealer said that was an issue for him, of course he had the higher priced vehicle in stock with BLIS so I can't be sure.

I thought I'd ask the forum. (yes I could take a test drive at night but I'm on the 4-midnight shift at work)

Thanks.

Everyone is different I guess for me it's not an issue. I love that the driver side mirror darkening quite nicely but not the little convex mirror which is ok. I'm pretty light sensitive as far as glare goes so for me it's perfect.

Oh and I forgot congrats on your purchase and welcome to the forum.

I use my mirrors a lot for backing and everything, I pretty much ignore the center mirror(goes back to my trucking days), and found those blind spot mirrors to be distracting and even in the way when trying to back up. So when test driving, try backing up and see if they cause problems like they did for me.

Thanks. I didn't seem to have a problem backing up with them, I'm only worried that they'll be annoying at night.

My previous car had Bliss and for some reason the driver's side would often quit working in the rain or mushy show. My new 2013 has just the mirrors. I was leery about not getting Bliss but due to funds did not get it and I am actually happy with the mirrors. I actually see more of what is going on. As far as backing up have the camera.

The first time I saw a Fusion, I was very happy to see it had the convex side mirrors. They were part of the icing on the cake along with some other features. Set up correctly, I feel they are better than BLIS, and I've never had a problem at night. The also don't give you false alerts.

Acdii, if you have the side mirrors set to give you the view that the center mirror gives you, it's no wonder you need BLIS.

Same here as fas the backing up but it hasn't been a problem since the camera is a very nice complimentary device.

No issues for us either. On occasion you can get headlight glare in the small mirror, but not often.

HA HA

Actually, setup correctly you don't need the convex mirrors either. If you set the mirrors so that to see the rear of the car you have to move your head close to the glass for the left, and towards the center for the right, then you wont have blind spots. To see directly behind, just tilt your head one way or the other. I can see in the next lane on either side just fine this way. What I like about BLIS is that a quick glance tells me if there is a car or not and I dont have to focus on the mirror to see it, I can even see it from my peripherals. I also tend to like a full mirror for backing out of places, and I seldom use the camera except when getting close to objects, or pulling out of a parking lot space when Bubba parks his big ol SUV next to me.

Why is it, there can be 20 empty spaces, and I am parked far away from the doors, some bubba has to park their big ugly SUV next to me?

Even though BLIS (and cross-traffic alert which is also tied into it) can be prone to false positives, I can't say I've noticed false negatives. The whole intent of the system is to get your attention to a potential hazard before changing lanes or backing out of a parking spot. I'd rather have it alert me more frequently to keep me in the habit of checking rather than not go off when I'm counting on it.

I haven't had any night issues, and in fact love the whole system. A recent rental had the convex mirrors, not the BLIS, and I started wondering if both could be used. I do adjust my mirrors as recommended, and mentioned above by acdii. I don't think the convex mirrors would 'fit' on the mirror tho, but if so it would be nice to have both sometimes. I do love the BLIS, and would not want a new car without them now. If only we could get one of those self-driving Google cars!

I always put a stick on convex mirror on the outside bottom corner of my outside mirrors. With bliss I get the best of both.

I used to do that too on all my past vehicles until I learned how to properly adjust the side mirrors. The aftermarket spot mirror people would go under if everyone knew how to properly adjust their outside mirrors. Even BLIS would not be needed. :read:

Even adjusted 'properly', which I have been doing for years I still like the redundancy of the BLIS, and may yet get the convex stick ons. Can't be too careful as my mom used to say!

We need to push Ford to incorporate the convex mirrors into their BLIS mirrors. This is an area where you "can't be too careful". Then with a Honda Lane Watch-like system also incorporated into it, our world would be perfect, and all the children would be holding hands.........

For the stick-on convex mirrors, like tr7, I have found the outer bottom corner to be the best spot, with the rectangular versions (instead of the round ones) giving you the easiest view to interpret.

As it was so eloquently put on SNL years ago: A Holiday Wish

Thanks to everyone that replied. I ended up buying the HyTi that has BLIS and picked it up two days ago. I really like the car so far. One of the quietest vehicles I've ever been in on the highway. And the adaptive cruise on ECO mode is downright amazing.

The car I test drove didn't have Blis, and those blindspot mirrors were very distracting, and coming from SUV mirrors, it felt like I lost half the mirror. Blis was a mandatory option. I really like that double confirmation. I check for the light first then the mirror, then a quick look. I feel like awareness has gone up a lot since buying it.
