Chrome accent body trim pieces, don't waste your money

After seeing Forum member's S-one's trunk protector I visited the link he supplied to Just Auto Trims, they have a lot of Fusion parts.

I saw some door moldings at $25 shipped so I ordered them, it took a couple weeks for them to arrive.

They are chromed plastic with a tape adhesive on the inside.

After inspecting the moldings I noticed the red backed tape adhesive was definitely not 3M quality and there was not much of it, it was very narrow.

 

There are two left and two right side moldings so I gave them a trial fit, cleaned the area with alcohol, removed the tape backing and stuck the first one on.

The adhesive tape wanted to pop off, I pressed harder and it stuck but there were gaps around the molding that a fingernail could catch in.

I opened the second one and then saw it had extra tape in two different areas - bad quality control.

I stuck it on and it fit even worse, the molding had a slight warp and would not sit flat on the FFH's door panel, some areas stuck but others popped up - a warped molding and bad tape.

 

As far as I'm concerned these may stick, sort of, but not for long. A little foul weather and normal use and these will fall off, there is no way that crappy adhesive tape would hold over time.

After seeing the 3M tape my Sharkfin uses this red backed tape is junk. It might be okay for a flat item on a horizontal surface but not on a curved vertical surface like a door handle.

 

I easily popped them off the car put them all back in the box and wrote a letter to the email contact for Just Auto Trims.

I'm not shipping them back to China and consider this as another example of a product that could be fine but too many shortcuts were used to cut costs.

I'm out $25 and have learned another lesson. They also sell Splash Guards, I'm glad I paid more and got the Ford OEM parts made in Germany.

That sucks. Get your own 3M molding tape and remount them. Worth a shot. :)

Good thinking, I just looked at 3M automotive trim tape on Amazon tonight, I may try that. :)

They do look kinda cool... But the trim that caught my eye was the chrome front fog bumper cover:

You can get it at most any automotive parts store like Autozone. :shift:

Before you install it, if you waxed the car recently, the alcohol wipe wont remove the wax, so find some paint prep if you can, or use a little Dawn in water and rube the area you plan to stick the tape to and it will stay put. Then rewax it all when done.

I'll tell you where the inferior tape sticks, on the item itself. I am slowly removing the old grey tape, it is a bugger to safely take off of the door molding.

The side that was supposed to stick to my car was dry and the cover wrap practically fell off in many areas.

 

If, and when I get that far I have enough 3M tape to do a trial run in an inconspicuous area. I am having second thoughts about the whole affair.

Of course the Seller is happily counting my money and not offering any help except to send more crappy tape.

Shipping back to China is a ridiculous thought, the items cost $25, shipped to me.

I found that the easiest way to remove the original poor quality adhesive tape is to get a stiff, sharp putty knife and slowly lift off bits at a time.

You have to do this with the chrome side down on a soft towel and hold on firmly, it was a major pain in the neck.

My heart was not in this project so I did it piecemeal, a little at a time, you know - perseverance.

That leads me to today, I finally removed all the lousy tape that was on the plastic chrome door handle surrounds.

 

This afternoon I put 3-M molding tape on the back of all four pieces, making sure I had 3-M tape on all the contact points to the FFH's doors.

I was apprehensive but went ahead and put the first one on and by golly - it stuck perfectly! That 3-M adhesive molding tape is great stuff!!

Now all four are on the car, they are firmly in place and ought to stay that way.

The picture you see in the very first post is the way the car looks now.

 

Too bad I don't trust this company, it would be a simple install if they used quality adhesive tape, but they don't.

Although I corrected the problem I certainly would not go through that again.

Thats ZM molding tape on there. Even says it lol
