After 7000 Miles

Recommended Posts

Howdy All,

I purchased my new 2013 HyTi in March. After 7000 miles my happiness so far has been mixed.

What I Like:

- Ride Quality: Drives excellent. Excellent handling, smooth and solid. Add the comfy leather seats and its is a pleasure to ride.

- Adapting Cruise & BLIS: I can't imagine owning another car without this. Use it all the time.

- Collision Warning: Great feature in heavy traffic. Sometimes it gets confused when you try to pass a car going slower. Scares the %$#! out of me every time :-)

- Styling is still excellent. No complaints!

Meh!:

- My Ford Touch. Even after the latest update, this system needs some work mostly in UI and slow touch controls. Navigation is marginal. It does hook up my devices easily though. Sound is excellent. Sirius information options are only half available in Vancouver, Canada. Traffic, movie, sports listings all work. But why not weather or fuel prices? Makes no sense.

- Park Assist. Hardly use it and when I do parallel park I find it takes less time doing it myself. :-)

Disappointments:

- My fuel economy is no better after the PCM update. In fact its worse. Deviations between the in car computer and Fuelly are greater. My trip meter may say 5.7 L/100km but fuelly will report 6.1 L/100km. That's quite a difference. The weather is getting cooler, ICE stays on longer at the start and comes on more often so I do expect fuel economy to get slightly worse. But I was hoping the PCM update would show some improvement. So far still waiting.

- Sensors: Parking sensors go off intermittently while stopped at traffic lights in Drive with foot on the brake. For no reason sometimes... no pedestrians, no cars moving around me... nothing!

- Fit and Finish: A few annoying issues. The vertical A-Pillar exterior tabs keep popping out. Piano Black plastic bezels on the inside rear left and right door bow and pop out. These were fixed by the dealer.

The big one is the trunk. The trunk is completely misaligned at the factory. I have had lots of troubles closing it. Visually the trunk is not aligned and when I showed my Ford dealer and his mechanic the problem, their comment was that is normal, no car is perfect. Excuse me?? I told them there is no way I am going to accept that. According to the dealer, the problem is that Ford did not design any adjustments to the trunk going back to the old crappy Taurus trunk design from years ago. So after some arguing they decided to take my Fusion into a body shop. They magically fixed some of the alignment problems but not all. The left side tail lights are still a good 1/8th inch off. At least the trunk closes better now :-) Clearly the dealer had no interest in trying to solve the problem but was forced to do it anyway. Very annoying. I am trying to decide whether I should try a different dealership or not. At $45k I just cannot accept such a problem that is visually obvious.

Well that's it! I still think its the best car available for my commute and driving comfort. If the new 2014 Caddy ELR was $20k less I would be interested.

Waiting for a mid-sized electric sedan that has Tesla Range for a "reasonable" price. Until I will still enjoy my HyTi and deal with the new body style teething pains!

The sensors go off depending on what vehicles are around you. Dump trucks, dirt bikes, some ricer exhaust will set them off. Dont ask me to explain it but if you got a buddy with a dirt bike tell them to get in front of you at 10feet and rev it. You will see it set them off.

Perhaps you can get a different dealer to take a look at the trunk. We had alignment issues too. The dealer adjusted the trunk and now it aligns perfectly. We did have to find a different dealer though, the one closest to home said that those misalignments and loose trim pieces are "acceptable". When we went back to our selling dealer which is farther away they have taken more or less good care of us. It has been 8 months trying to get them to fix these issues but they have been trying. Many of the trim pieces that need replacing have been on back order for months because so many cars have had the same issues.

The fit and finish issues you mention have been common issues across many vehicles.

It's too bad Ford can't maintain more control over their dealerships. I have posted numerous times how poor the service department was at the dealership from which I bought my FFH. I am now going to another dealer for service, and they do an awesome job, are thorough in their work, and treat me like they actually care.

After writing a scathing letter my original dealership, the manager called me to ask me to give them another chance, but I told them it was too late. I'm much happier at the other dealership, and they are much closer to where I live as well.

Thats better than my local dealership. After they continued to break stuff the service manager told my service writer to tell me to "f*** off and never come back to that dealership" he screamed it inside the shop too so it echoed thru the whole outside area.

I called ford after this and they said they would make a report but gave me a list of dealerships in order by customer surveys. That dealership was at the bottom of the list as a last resort.

On a positive note any issue or question ive had since my lincoln the owner of the dealership about 30min from me will usually call me or have the service manager call me. Dont even have to deal with a service writer. So if things stay this way I may just have to stick with his dealership in the future. My dads actually in a cmax rental right now , maybe he will get one.

My car is 4 days old (fully loaded 2014 Ford Fusion Hybrid Titanium) and en route to work in L.A. (not a good place to have an unreliable car) the Collision Warning went off, my steering wheel froze, car slowed down, and I felt like I was losing power. Thank God this only lasted a few seconds! Had I been on the canyon road I could've gone over the side! The alarm went off again a few minutes later. Dealership service said they can't find the problem, but the NY Times article from November 2012 talks about this scary glitch. I am not comfortable - especially after spending a lot of $$$. Not sure what to do or what will happen next.

That NY Times review is what kept me from getting any of the Driver Assist options (their extra cost was actually a bigger factor). I don't think I would handle the false alarms well. Isn't there an option where you can turn any one of these features off?

Yes, they are all configurable in the settings menu on the left dashboard screen. For collision alert, you can select different sensitivity levels. My dealer recommended setting it to low to reduce false alarms when he was delivering the car.

I have only had it trigger three times. The first was on the freeway while using adaptive cruise. A car changed lanes in front of me and the adaptive cruise didn't slow down fast enough on its own. The second and third were last week on the same drive. One was a car turning into a restaurant that was never really a risk, but the other time traffic was slowing down faster than expected and it did prove helpful. Overall, I'm satisfied with the feature.

I've had it go off a couple of times. Usually a car doing a slow right turn in front. When it has gone off I've been overdosed on coffee and it didn't bother me in the least.

I've had the collision warning go off when coming up to a sharp turn in the road. I should check the sensitivity settings. When it goes off I have never experienced any changes in the steering feel. Each time I have steered through the curve in the road and it has stopped beeping at me.

You get used to the false alarms after a while. Then again, when you could REALLY use it, it doesn't work. Had I not been on the brakes, it may have triggered with enough warning to have avoided the crash on Friday. It does not trigger if you are already braking.

I'm at 8,500 miles.

Disappointments:

- Sensors: Parking sensors go off intermittently while stopped at traffic lights in Drive with foot on the brake. For no reason sometimes... no pedestrians, no cars moving around me... nothing!

- Fit and Finish: A few annoying issues. The vertical A-Pillar exterior tabs keep popping out. Piano Black plastic bezels on the inside rear left and right door bow and pop out. These were fixed by the dealer.

I've not had the sensors go off by themselves yet. The Driver Alert freaks me out too - so I turned it off.

Fit and finish. My FFH SE hasn't had anything "pop out". If anything, there are plastic-on-plastic vibrations that annoy me, but that's probably because the car is so quiet in EV mode. My trunk is perfectly aligned.

I love this car.

I have those exact same feelings as I proceed with my investigations and plans for ordering a 2015 FFH. I am leaning toward a FFH S largely because of those same reasons. I applaude Ford for being a leader in the deployment of this technology in mainstream cars but when this technology fails it can be very frustrating or even disconcerting as Nic3868 described.

I tend to have a "less is more" view on things. I have only grudingly accepted power windows and door locks in recent years. ;) And I am still trying to figure out why I am considering a FFH with all of its inherit technology and complexity.

Hopefully you "early adopters" have blazed the trail and it will be smooth sailing for me.
