So since someone posted this.... I was looking at the VW TDI SEL Premium which is 30/40 mpg, but everyone sees low 40's to high 40's on mpg. What do you guys think?? Same exact price point as a ford fusion hybrid titanium, and same exact options down to the tee....

My issue is build quality on VW. I know many of us with the FFH have had some electrical glitches, but the overall build quality has been quite good overall for Ford. VW has consistently ranked amongst the lowest reliability in Consumer Reports surveys. I was too nervous to go with the VW.

It honestly looks very solid... My biggest thing is the Ford dash I feel like is stronger. Its probably the fusions best feature in my eyes. BUT... That in mind, I feel like I may just suck it up and get the VW TDI, it has a very consistent mpg of achieving it without babying the car, and also the inside of the car is very very nice as well.

Drive them both.. The passat seems very dated.. If interior wise was closer to the Mkz or fusion I'd have it

I did drive them both! Now im more confused.... I havent drove the Fusion in a while since I have a 2014 with cooled seats on order, but I cant really wait any longer. I wasnt going to cancel my order, but I didnt expect the Passat to be such a smooth drive. The passat was redesigned in 2012 so only 1 year older then the fusion if Im not mistaken. The interior to me does feel more upscale in the VW, its just the dash that seems more outdated to me. I wish decision making was easier...... I like the wood trim in the VW, and wish the fusion would have that.

If ur buying now.. Get the fusion.. Or maybe check for a base mkzh.. Same price range and the Lincoln includes service and better bumper to bumper too... If you can wait a year wait for the full redesign of the passat.. The infotainment system in the current sucks. The redesign u speak of is exterior redesign

Agreed, the infotainment system sucks in the passat... Thats my biggest quarrel. The MKZh is not my thing, I want a fully maxed out car for about 35 and the fusion titanium offers that. BUT, the mpg everyone sees is all over the place : /

 

Is it worth it to keep waiting for cooled seats, or do you think its just a unnecessary need?

 

Edit: Just googled the 2015 passat and it shows just a carry over, nothing until 2016... so 2 years : /

Cooled seats are bottom only. A disappointment for me. So take that into consideration. A 14 fusion optioned out completely was closer to 39k as I looked at one before I took my mkz. The titanium seats suck, ask opinions on here. Another reason I went with my mkz.

I just looked at MKZh and unfortunately when Im done adding all the options I want it turns into a 47000 car which I cant do :(

I also considered the TDIs but was concerned about reliability especially with all of the HPFP failures related to ULSD in the States. Not sure if Bosch also provides the HPFP in the Cruze or the soon-to-arrive Mazda6 diesel which is really the diesel I was most interested in. The overall failure rate on the fuel pumps is not terrible - until it statistically happens to you. Then it's a nightmare as VW tries to blame it on the fuel quality to avoid an $8K-ish warranty repair. Many VW TDI owners keep every single gas receipt to prove they filled their car with diesel and not regular gas by accident (the VW response) and/or to legally challenge the fuel quality guarantee from the gas station if needed. It's a bummer - I love diesels.

FWIW, my 2006 Jetta had a better build quality as far as the interior goes than my FFH (which I love, don't get me wrong). I've had a 2000 Beetle and the Jetta and neither gave me any issues whatsoever. Now, the FFH is a better looking car, in my opinion, and the ride is very smooth. And my personal experience with the fuel economy is VERY positive, as I'm averaging 48-51 MPG on my daily commute which is 85% highway (65 MPH for me). I think either would be a great choice honestly. Diesel was not worth it where I live, which is why I ultimately decided to go hybrid.

I will still take the Fusion as it is a bigger car. Plus we paid less than that for our 13 FFH.

Not only bigger but much more stylish and feature laden. Also the price of diesel is a lot higher than gas so the 46 mpg isn't that great in comparison.

It's these cars that put diesel in a bad light. Back in the 80's Nissan came out with a Diesel Sentra. It got 80 MPG. Do you see any of them? VW is the only one to make a diesel car that sold well. They put diesels in little crappy cars and expect people to flock to them. Put a diesel in a Fusion and then you might have something.

I'm pretty sure 46 MPG is just the highway mileage. No way a diesel does that in city driving. If any significant amount of your driving takes place on roads with stoplights, the MPG will drop considerably. It's good to see GM at least trying something different from most competitors, but I'd still go with the FFH based on a number of dimensions.
